It is crazy how much she seems to have made little noise there. Most of these huge eras with multiple IFPI singles scratch Japan too

It genuinely wasn’t.

“21” simply wasn’t pushed in Japan at all and the only, mildly successful single there was “Someone Like You”.

However; like you said, no one can have everything. Although it was a different time, massive western artists such as Elvis Presley, The Beatles etc. were mostly commercial non-events in Japan too (although TB have good catalog sales there).

This is genuinely shocking. I'd assume 21 would follow as one of those big ballad-centered eras that did well in Japan as was the case with Mariah and Celine in the 90s. A missed opportunity by her team if they didn't push it there because 21 selling more in smaller markets with less populations like Switzerland and New Zealand than it did in Japan is just mind-blowing :rip:

With The Beatles and Elvis I assume Japan hadn't quite become the massive music market it is back then?

You said this century so the top 10 would look weird like this :deadbanana:

why not career totals? If even Glitter and Charmbracelet is here, i’m sure Mariah would be on the top of the list. Weird thread tbh.

How far off is self titled from platinum status in Japan? @ProudLBSRock n Roll, How You Remind Me and Bad Reputation were three big hits there from that era. Surely the album did well?

like 25K copies away

but Japan doesn’t include streaming in their album certifications so it’ll probably never go Platinum lol

Because her first 3 albums sold over 1M copies in Japan and it’s the name of the certification

100,000 for Gold

250,000 for Platinum

1,000,000 for Million

Because her albums sold the most out of all the girls. She’s had the highest peak in Japan this century out of any MPG.

Gaga is just too global, not everybody has thaT :jonnycat:

The fact that Rih's second best selling album there is MUSIC OF THE SUN.... Just shows how weird and different the Japanese market is.

Anyway she has sold over a million albums in her career there, so she definitely has had pretty good success in Japan too.

Japanese certifications are based on shipments and not sales. I recall Red going platinum there in December 2012, only around 1.5 months after release, even though it had only sold 106,000 copies by that week, and didn't hit 250,000 copies sold until mid-November 2013.  Similarly 1989 went platinum in April 2015, when it had only sold 199,000 copies, and it hit 250,000 copies in September 2015.

I don't think Avril's label will pay for it, but it is more than eligible for platinum there.
