Green Posted February 10, 2022 Posted February 10, 2022 There are obviously many female artists with #1's during the physical singles era, but I'm posting the Sales/Airplay peaks of the #1 Hot 100 hits for some of the biggest female artists of the 80's/90's and early 00's (1984-2004). I'm doing it since 1984 because that was the year when Billboard started to publish the component charts separated (Singles Sales and Hot 100 Airplay) until 2004 because the Hot 100 started to include Digital Sales in 2005. ***At the end of November of 1991 Billboard started to use Soundscan for the Hot 100. Some #1's like "I Don't Wanna Cry" (Mariah Carey) and "The Promise of a New Day" (Paula Abdul) wouldn't have been #1 if Billboard had used Soundscan earlier that same year. Madonna Hot 100 #1’s Singles Sales Airplay Hot 100 "Like A Virgin" (1984) #1 (4 weeks) #1 (5 weeks) #1 (6 weeks) "Crazy For You" (1985) #2 #1 (1 week) #1 (1 week) "Live to Tell" (1986) #2 #1 (3 weeks) #1 (1 week) "Papa Don't Preach" (1986) #1 (3 weeks) #1 (2 weeks) #1 (2 weeks) "Open Your Heart" (1987) #2 #1 (2 weeks) #1 (1 week) "Who's That Girl" (1987) #1 (1 week) #1 (2 weeks) #1 (1 week) "Like a Prayer" (1989) #1 (3 weeks) #1 (3 weeks) #1 (3 weeks) "Vogue" (1990) #1 (2 weeks) #1 (3 weeks) #1 (3 weeks) "Justify My Love" (1991) #1 (5 weeks) #2 #5 (BDS-Radio Monitor) #1 (2 weeks) "This Used to Be My Playground" (1992) #3 #2 #1 (1 week) "Take a Bow" (1995) #4 #1 (9 weeks) #1 (7 weeks) "Music" (2000) #1 (4 weeks) #3 #1 (4 weeks) Whitney Houston Hot 100 #1’s Singles Sales Airplay Hot 100 "Saving All My Love for You" (1985) #1 (2 weeks) #3 #1 (1 week) "How Will I Know" (1986) #1 (1 week) #1 (2 weeks) #1 (2 weeks) "Greatest Love of All" (1986) #1 (1 week) #1 (2 weeks) #1 (3 weeks) "I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)" (1987) #1 (2 weeks) #1 (3 weeks) #1 (2 weeks) "Didn't We Almost Have It All" (1987) #1 (2 weeks) #1 (1 week) #1 (2 weeks) "So Emotional" (1987) #1 (2 weeks) #2 #1 (1 week) "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" (1988) #1 (2 weeks) #1 (1 week) #1 (2 weeks) "I'm Your Baby Tonight" (1990) #3 #1 (1 week) #3 (BDS-Radio Monitor) #1 (1 week) "All the Man That I Need" (1991) #1 (1 week) #1 (1 week) #4 (BDS-Radio Monitor) #1 (2 weeks) "I Will Always Love You" (1992-1993) #1 (14 weeks) #1 (11 weeks) #1 (14 weeks) "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)" (1995) #1 (1 week) #4 #1 (1 week) Janet Jackson Hot 100 #1’s Singles Sales Airplay Hot 100 "When I Think of You" (1986) #2 #1 (2 weeks) #1 (2 weeks) "Miss You Much" (1989) #1 (3 weeks) #1 (3 weeks) #1 (4 weeks) "Escapade" (1990) #1 (2 weeks) #1 (4 weeks) #1 (3 weeks) "Black Cat" (1990) #2 #2 #1 (1 week) "Love Will Never Do (Without You)" (1990) #6 #1 (3 weeks) #1 (7 weeks) (BDS-Radio Monitor) #1 (1 week) "That's the Way Love Goes" (1993) #1 (5 weeks) #1 (10 weeks) #1 (8 weeks) "Again" (1993) #2 #1 (4 weeks) #1 (2 weeks) "Together Again" (1997) #3 #8 #1 (2 weeks) "Doesn't Really Matter" (2000) #1 (2 weeks) #2 #1 (3 weeks) "All for You" (2001) #1 (4 weeks) #1 (2 weeks) #1 (7 weeks) Paula Abdul Hot 100 #1’s Singles Sales Airplay Hot 100 "Straight Up" (1989) #1 (1 week) #1 (3 weeks) #1 (3 weeks) "Forever Your Girl" (1989) #2 #1 (2 weeks) #1 (2 weeks) "Cold Hearted" (1989) #1 (1 week) #1 (1 week) #1 (1 week) "Opposites Attract" (1990) #1 (3 weeks) #1 (4 weeks) #1 (3 weeks) "Rush Rush" (1991) #3 #1 (9 weeks) #1 (5 weeks) "The Promise of a New Day" (1991) #25* #5* #1 (1 week) Mariah Carey Hot 100 #1’s Singles Sales Airplay Hot 100 "Vision of Love" (1990) #1 (2 weeks) #1 (3 weeks) #1 (4 weeks) "Love Takes Time" (1990) #1 (2 weeks) #1 (2 weeks) #1 (4 weeks) (BDS-Radio Monitor) #1 (3 weeks) "Someday" (1991) #2 #1 (4 weeks) #1 (10 weeks) (BDS-Radio Monitor) #1 (2 weeks) "I Don't Wanna Cry" (1991) #3 #17 (Soundscan) #1 (2 weeks) #4 (BDS-Radio Monitor) #1 (2 weeks) "Emotions" (1991) #10 #1 (4 weeks) #1 (3 weeks) "I'll Be There" (1992) #3 #1 (8 weeks) #1 (2 weeks) "Dreamlover" (1993) #2 #1 (11 weeks) #1 (8 weeks) "Hero" (1993-1994) #2 #1 (10 weeks) #1 (4 weeks) "Fantasy" (1995) #1 (5 weeks) #1 (7 weeks) #1 (8 weeks) "One Sweet Day" (1995-1996) #1 (11 weeks) #1 (13 weeks) #1 (16 weeks) "Always Be My Baby" (1996) #1 (1 week) #2 #1 (2 weeks) "Honey" (1997) #1 (3 weeks) #11 #1 (3 weeks) "My All" (1998) #1 (2 weeks) #15 #1 (1 week) "Heartbreaker" (1999) #1 (2 weeks) #8 #1 (2 weeks) "Thank God I Found You" (2000) #1 (3 weeks) #15 #1 (1 week) Celine Dion Hot 100 #1’s Singles Sales Airplay Hot 100 "The Power Of Love" (1994) #1 (5 weeks) #2 #1 (4 weeks) "Because You Loved Me" (1996) #1 (6 weeks) #1 (14 weeks) #1 (6 weeks) "My Heart Will Go On" (1998) #1 (2 weeks) #1 (10 weeks) #1 (2 weeks) "I'm Your Angel" (1998) #1 (6 weeks) #22 #1 (6 weeks) TLC Hot 100 #1’s Singles Sales Airplay Hot 100 "Creep" (1995) #1 (5 weeks) #3 #1 (4 weeks) "Waterfalls" (1995) #1 (3 weeks) #2 #1 (7 weeks) "No Scrubs" (1999) #1 (4 weeks) #1 (13 weeks) #1 (4 weeks) "Unpretty" (1999) #2 #2 #1 (3 weeks) Toni Braxton Hot 100 #1’s Singles Sales Airplay Hot 100 "You're Makin' Me High" (1996) #2 #6 #1 (1 week) "Un-Break My Heart" (1996) #1 (1 week) #1 (2 weeks) #1 (11 weeks) Spice Girls Hot 100 #1’s Singles Sales Airplay Hot 100 "Wannabe" (1997) #1 (4 weeks) #6 #1 (4 weeks) Brandy Hot 100 #1’s Singles Sales Airplay Hot 100 "The Boy Is Mine" (1998) #1 (9 weeks) #2 #1 (13 weeks) "Have You Ever?" D.M.F Posted February 10, 2022 Posted February 10, 2022 Xtina’s stats are amazing. Britney’s stats are so bad lol; it’s funny how she still doesn’t have a Radio Airplay #1 and it’s been over 20 years.

They still used their sales & airplay data from playlists.

Gurl back then, radio and sales were like streaming today. Imagine a song peaking at #15 on Streaming and being #1 on Hot 100 Also, the pysical songs had pre-order system that lasted for months, that's why so many songs have a #1 peak on the physical singles chart. Sinister Posted February 10, 2022 Posted February 10, 2022 Promise of A New Day has long been brought up as one of the most suspect #1 case. it literally makes 0 sense 1 hour ago, Green said: "Un-Break My Heart" (1996) #1 (1 week) #1 (2 weeks) #1 (11 weeks) How does a song spend so long at #1 on the Hot 100, but not nearly as long on the components that make up the chart

Kelly (I Believe I Can Fly) was #1 on Sales for more weeks but it had lower airplay than Toni
UseYourIllusion2002 Posted February 10, 2022 Posted February 10, 2022 The Promise of A New Day I love that song but would it have even reached the top 10?
UseYourIllusion2002 Posted February 10, 2022 Posted February 10, 2022 Madonna hits being legit though the fact that Justify My Love went #5 on BDS radio and Erotica going #2 despite them being controversial and all she does is talk and moan Truly queen of the early 90s.
tiagol88 Posted February 10, 2022 Posted February 10, 2022 Madonna is actually more or less similar for both sales and airplay. Not really huge discrepancies...

Shirlene Posted February 10, 2022 Posted February 10, 2022 Someday was #1 on BDS for 10 weeks? That was Pop radio then, right?
