love your write up about Solar Power, it is too much hated, even though it never reaches highs of Melodrama, it's still such a solid album

Blue Weekend :alexz:  my favorite discovery this year

Wow, Wolf Alice. Great band.

i guess my issue with it is that lorde sounds better on

more dynamic, electro-pop production but her over

live instrumentation isn't half bad, especially when she

provides listeners with intriguing (somewhat dense at times)

lyrics.

This is my take too, it's not a horrible album but I feel like her voice is suited to electronic music. Though the lyrics were the main issue for me, they weren't as insightful as the rest of her work.

Blue Weekend was disappointing to me and their worst output imo but it's still decent and has highlights

Yola served a bit

I really liked Blue Weekend and Stand For Myself too! As you know, I agree that Solar Power is overhated.

Oh wait i forgot about Jenevievie. I really love all of the singles from this album. Let me catch up a bit :jonny5:

The Wolf Alice new album has been a hit or miss for me but it's been growing for me for sure. I just can't dislike them too much nnn

I agree with combining two sounds like electro-pop & laid back acoustic pop songs into one. I feel like that's the huge problem for Solar Power as an album for me because i feel like Lorde & Jack has this summer tanning on the sun type of music and it feels realy boring a bit dd

The huge acclaim for Yola yes :jonny5: It's what she deserves!

I was gonna listen to Yola but I passed on it :monkey:

Blue Weekend had some really good songs :clap3: I need to revisit it

Solar Power wasn't great but at least it had a handful of cute songs

X. kick IIII - ARCA

Arca Announces Fourth and Final KiCK Album And Premieres "Queer" - Rolling Stone

:turkey:

the penultimate release from arca's five-part series

is defined by its alluring strings and rejuvenating

ambient pop rhythms.

the queen herself described the album as an

"entry of sensual change..." that plays with the

"queering the void" and arca achieves just that.

listening to kick iiii feels like a passive trip

through outer space. it's calming for the

most part, strange yet exciting in other

places and altogether transformative.

while arca documents her growth in some of

the most abstract ways, you can't help but

delve deeper and try to understand the messages

in the music. and from there, you start to learn things

about yourself and your outlook on the world. at least

i did and those are the best music projects imo.

top tracks: lost woman found, alien inside

genre: ambient pop, electronic, art pop

IX. NONANTE-CINQ - ANGÈLE

Cover art for Nonante-Cinq by Angèle

:turkey:

this was a Q4 surprise from one of four francophone queens

i stan.  brol was a really solid and interesting pop project both

in lyrical content and melodies however nonante-cinq is truly

achieves a similar success in evolution and stylistic choices as

her british collaborator's future nostalgia  record.

the album plays with the same dance-pop sensibilities commonly

seen across the music world however doesn't come across as

generic or cheap. she subtly hints at profound topics such as

belgian reunification as well as mental health, her love of her fans.

angèle includes some of the typical topics of a great pop album while

retaining the unique quirks that make records like nonante-cinq a

great angèle album.

top tracks: démons, profite

genre: dance-pop, french pop, electro-pop

VIII.  MONTERO - LIL NAS X

Cover art for Montero by Lil Nas X

:turkey:

"that's my mama and y'all can tweet you can do whateva you can

tweet till you get blue in the face i don't care she can have whatever she

want cause that’s my mama"

i've been waiting for this moment for a while and now its finally here.

lil nas x graduates from meme pop gay to thee main pop gay with this

expansive debut album.  as another queer, black boy, the themes of this

album really HIT men just because this is like the first time we have someone

that's mainstream and making great music. a seemingly fun pop record does

touch on the aftereffects of homophobia, reaching success and relationships.

now what montero truly excels in is being a diverse, pop record that also sounds

intact which is pretty difficult to achieve. the features only elevate the tracks

and create an overall, enjoyable yet strong album (poor drake and kanye)

even if he had to have elton john on the record *retches in disgust*

top tracks: dead right now, scoop

genre: pop rap, rap, trap

VII.  KicK III - ARCA

Cover art for KicK iii by Arca

:turkey:

the best that the kick series has to offer, dona arca

plays with melodies and rhythms that gives albums

like homogenic a run for their money (jk).this entire

series has been a joyous trip however kick iii was

what really made me consider how much i truly

appreciate arca and her contributions to music.

her approach truly has no bounds and i can really

count on her to introduce me to new productions

and new, important messages about...existence

really. the heavy and noisy atmosphere makes

me feel like a dystopian, fire breathing fairy

queen in the best way possible.

top tracks: morbo, joya

genre: deconstructed club, glitch-hop

VI.  PLANET HER - DOJA CAT

Cover art for Planet Her by Doja Cat

:turkey:

now this was grower of the year! i went from seeing

this as an underwhelming follow-up to the seemingly

concrete hot pink . once i got lost in the crisp,

intriguing production as well as doja's lush vocals,

i fell in love.

part of my disappointment came in how the project flowed

and the stark difference in the lore doja hyped up on

twitter and the end result i.e. the album. like her musical twin

montero, planet her takes the many sub-genres of pop, r&b

and hip=hop, morphing them into a beautiful concoction of

rhythmic pop excellence that deserved to be celebrated for

centuries to come if we live that long that is  .

top tracks: naked, need to know, options

genre: pop rap, contemporary r&b

iiii my least favorite, still cute. Alien was my favorite as well. I... do not seem to care much for Angele's albums??? I remember being very excited to listen to Brol after hearing some singles and being way disappointed. Was less disappointed with this release, but still.

Montero, ARCA iii!!!!!!! YUP true that it's the best one.

Doja  I'm just never gonna give a shit about her until she stops working with Luke.
