This is the 12th of several installments for the 2021 edition of JGib's Best Ofs.  The Top 360 Songs of 2021  list will resume next Monday, with a recap of songs 360-181 and songs 180-161 to open the 2nd half of the list.

2021 MLB Review

The 2021 MLB Regular Season started on time this season with the full 162-game schedule and the reverting of most of the 2019 rules, including the return to the DH at AL stadiums only (which almost certainly means that 2021 was the final year of pitchers hitting at NL parks) and the playoffs at 5 teams per league (3 division winners + 2 wild cards) for 10 total. The 7-inning doubleheaders and the runner starting at 2nd during each extra inning remained from the COVID-shortened 2020 season.

 

This was the final season that the Cleveland MLB Team was known as the Cleveland Indians, as they will be known as the Cleveland Guardians. 

 

Fan capacity limits at MLB stadiums gradually increased and then were done away with throughout the season to allow a full capacity crowd due to the COVID pandemic. Due to cross-border travel restrictions for nonessential purposes between the US/Canada border during the majority of the season, the Toronto Blue Jays held their home games at Dunedin, Florida and Buffalo, New York. In late July, the Blue Jays were granted permission to hold home games at their actual home stadium, Rogers Centre, for the first time since the end of the 2019 season.

 

The MLB All-Star Game and its associated activities returned after a one-year hiatus due to the COVID-shortened 2020 season. The initial location of the All-Star Game was to be held at Truist Park in Georgia near Atlanta; however, due to the furor against voter suppression bill Georgia SB202, the game was relocated to Coors Field in Denver, Colorado. 

The 2021 MLB Draft, also relocated from Georgia to Colorado, saw 20 rounds conducted-- 15 more than last year's but a far cry from the pre-COVID era of 40 rounds. The Pittsburgh Pirates took Catcher Henry Davis at #1 from the University of Louisville. 

 

As of December 2nd, the MLB entered a lockout that ended nearly 27 years of labor peace. The last time the MLB shut down was in August 1994, which led to the postseason being cancelled and the 1995 MLB season to be under a truncated scheduled and a delayed start. The Montréal Expos-- who were one of the best teams that year-- never recovered, and eventually became the Washington Nationals at the end of the 2004 season after spending the last two seasons before splitting time between Montréal, Québec, Canada, and San Juan, Puerto Rico. 

 

How long will the lockout drag on is the question? Will it be resolved before Spring Training starts? Will it lead to a delayed regular season and Spring Training? Will it lead to a truncated regular season or even no season akin to the 2004/05 NHL season that was cancelled due to the lockout? Stay tuned as more developments come in. 

 

The 2022 MLB season, if a season will happen (either the full normal 162 or a shortened one), will feature some changes-- most notably the universal DH, international draft, and service time manipulation prevention measures, and more.

2021 NHL Review

The 2020-21 NHL Season was shortened to 56 games from the normal 82 and games confined to the temporary realigned divisions due to the US/Canada Border being closed to nonessential travel amid the ongoing COVID pandemic. The playoff format stayed at 16 teams, but was slightly modified to eliminated the Wild Cards, meaning the top 4 in each division go to the playoffs. Many rinks operated at reduced spectator capacity throughout the season and a few didn't permit spectators (mostly the Canadian ones). Some rinks did permit full capacity during the playoffs. The shortened season had the taxi squad rule of 4-6 players, including at least a goalie, rostered. 

 

This season was the final season in which NBC had the US TV rights for the NHL. NBCSN, the former main home for the NHL, is shutting down at the end of 2021. 

 

The current 2021-22 NHL season is back to the normal 82-game schedule and normal division alignments, with the Arizona Coyotes moving to the Central Division due to the entrance of the Seattle Kraken, who are placed in the Pacific Division. All arenas are back to full capacity; however, certain arenas are mandating a COVID vaccination and/or a negative COVID test to enter, along with mask mandates.  The NHL All-Star Game and the NHL Winter Classic (between the Blues and Wild, which was originally scheduled in 2021) are back after a season hiatus due to COVID.

 

The NHL was scheduled to a take a break during the majority of February 2022 for the Olympics in Beijing, but due to the Omicron variant and China's quarantine policies, the NHL reversed course and said no to sending players to Beijing. Instead, the cancelled Olympic break will be used for make-up games that were postponed recently.

 

Starting this season, ESPN/ESPN+/ABC and TNT/TBS are your new homes for the NHL on US television.
