Universal’s biggest revenue-generating recording artist in the second quarter of 2021, confirms Vivendi’s results, was BTS.

That’s a touch confusing, as BTS is typically distributed outside of South Korea by Sony Music / The Orchard. However, UMG partners with Big Hit / HYBE on the band’s Japanese-language output.

UMG’s second biggest artist in revenue-generating terms in Q2 was Justin Bieber, followed by (in order), Olivia Rodrigo, The Weeknd, and Pop Smoke.

Best selling projects:

Recorded music best-sellers for the first half included a best-of release from BTS, new releases from Justin Bieber and Olivia Rodrigo, and continued sales from The Weeknd, Pop Smoke and Ariana Grande.

BTS Japanese release outgrossing Olivia s entire worldwide revenue. :bibliahh:
Selling 1 million albums at $20 a pop and breaking streaming and single sales records in Japan did that.

ATRL told me Olivia was the moment. :biblio:

It’s WW numbers, not just the US. I’d assume Olivia did better in US because she has the album out.

congrats BTS on running the world :clap3:
