It’s kind of shocking how rudimentary Lorde’s lyrics are, but they’re passed off as quirky yet profound because of the production. It’s not even clever wordplay. It’s not satire, there’s not a concept. Just strangely basic. “I hate the winter...can’t stand the cold. I tend to cancel all the plans.” “Those sharks they have big teeth...he thinks you love the beach you’re such a damn liar.”

I think you’re looking at the individual words and not thinking of the meaning. There are some writers who can paint a picture with their words without being on the nose.

Like I love Olivia, but girl I don’t need to know he left a note on the Starbucks cup as you walked out the door.

Billie Eilish.

Tripe like this:

Quote

[Chorus]

I'm not your friend
Or anything, damn
You think that you're the man
I think, therefore, I am
I'm not your friend
Or anything, damn
You think that you're the man
I think, therefore, I am

[Verse 1]
Stop, what the hell are you talking about? Ha
Get my pretty name out of your mouth
We are not the same with or without
Don't talk 'bout me like how you might know how I feel
Top of the world, but your world isn't real
Your world's an ideal

[Pre-Chorus]
So go have fun
I really couldn't care less
And you can give 'em my best, but just know

[Chorus]
I'm not your friend
Or anything, damn
You think that you're the man
I think, therefore, I am
I'm not your friend
Or anything, damn
You think that you're the man
I think, therefore, I am

[Verse 2]
I don't want press to put your name next to mine
We're on different lines, so I
Wanna be nice enough, they don't call my bluff
'Cause I hate to find
Articles, articles, articles
Rather you remain unremarkable (Got a lotta)
Interviews, interviews, interviews
When they say your name, I just act confused

[Pre-Chorus]
Did you have fun?
I really couldn't care less
And you can give 'em my best, but just know

[Chorus]
I'm not your friend
Or anything, damn
You think that you're the man
I think, therefore, I am
I'm not your friend
Or anything, damn
You think that you're the man
I think, therefore, I am

[Bridge]
I'm sorry
I don't think I caught your name
I'm sorry
I don't think I caught your name

[Chorus]
I'm not your friend (I'm not your friend)
Or anything, damn
You think that you're the man (They wanna, they can try)
I think, therefore, I am (I am)
I'm not your friend (Friend)
Or anything, damn (They wanna)
You think that you're the man (You're the man)
I think, therefore, I am (Therefore, I am)

New standalone single ‘Therefore I Am’ is a bruising statement that picks up where 2018’s ‘Copycat’ and ‘You Should See Me In A Crown’ left off. At that time, Eilish felt slighted by the impersonators, in the former claiming that the pretenders were merely in italics, while Billie “in bold”. Low-key brutal. Everyone wanted more than just a piece of her, but to wholesale pinch her style. On ‘Therefore I Am’, she’s had enough of that sh*t.

Billie sees through fakeness. Lamenting the endless media coverage, she asks the fakers to “get my pretty name out of your mouth” and to not “talk about me like you might know how I feel”. It’s a deliciously spicy tale where the subject’s identity will no doubt have fans decoding every line in hope for details. Billie has said her piece; you guys do the rest.

From this song, there’s no clear blueprint for where her and producer and brother FINNEAS are headed musically, but there continues to be real joy in watching them figure it out and experiment. Each song since 2019’s minimalist ‘everything i wanted’ has been wildly different to the last. July’s ‘My Future’ saw her explore shimmering neo-soul, while her theme song for the delayed James Bond film, No Time To Die, proved that her unique singing style could hold its own against orchestral swells provided by film composer Hans Zimmer and Smiths legend Johnny Marr.

There is one constant, though: Billie’s continued taking stock of and reflecting on her rise and the people that surround her is turning into a fascinating thread in her music. She’s not alone in this approach, but few do it quite as candidly – her level self-awareness continues to lead to some truly addictive songwriting. Descartes would be proud.

Olivia Rodrigo :emofish: She definitely has potential but right now her songwriting isn't really all that. Not even going to talk about the Taylor comparisons cause :priceless: The good thing is that she's young so she could always improve in the future.

Well, actually I have heard music from that era and the songwriting is good. However, recently it dipped hard, the songs on After Hours have terrible songwriting and are basic. The production saved the entire album.

Eh Lorde has great lyrics. Not every song has to be “wordplay” or... “satire” :rip:

I’m saying those lyrics are “not even” satire with how ridiculous they are.

yeah Lorde, especially in Melodrama :deadbanana4: people were so crazy about Liability and The Louvre but jeez so many basic lyrics there. I remember there were like ten viral posts on tumblr about the lyrics on those songs and Green Light and I was like …yeah okay. listen to Joanna Newsom or Kate Bush or Nina Simone or Rickie Lee Jones if you actually wanna be wowed by lyrics

love a good amount of Lorde’s music, but mostly for melody
