Did you know: Bad Romance was 3k sales from #1?

The week "Bad Romance" was closest to #1 was in Christmas 2009- ironically it dropped from #2 to #3 that week (the top 3 was super competitive) - but Bad Romance was the most downloaded song of the week and only ~3000 digital sales from the #1 spot!

December 26, 2009 - Hot 100

1. Empire State of Mind: 261771 points (137k sales, 125k airplay)

2. Tik Tok: 259047 points (182k sales, 74.4k airplay)

3. Bad Romance: 258547 points (183k sales, 76k airplay)

You might notice that BR is below Tik Tok despite being bigger in airplay & sales: streaming (AOL/Yahoo Music) which only made up ~5% of the chart at that time pushed Tik Tok to #2 because they basically had the same stats in sales/airplay. Billboard posted an article about that here: https://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/266356/ask-billboard-how-tik-tok-winds-up-at-no-2

It ended up peaking at #2 for 7 weeks, initially blocked by "Empire State of Mind" and later blocked by Kesha's "Tik Tok"

We should've streamed on Yahoo Music/AOL Music and given it that small boost without losing any money

State of Grace.

Bad Romance is still one of the biggest #2s songs ever. And its currently outstreaming those songs that blocked it. She's fine even without reaching #1.

If YouTube had counted it would've been #1 for like 10 weeks. Video streams are half the reason it's certified Diamond in the US.

If only Billboard changed the formula for Gag the way the did for "the boys"

Also I'm pretty sure it would have hit #1 either the week in question or some other week if BB had incorporated YT streams into their formula earlier

Either way, Bad Romance never going #1 is proof that the highly-coveted spot doesn't mean all that much, as pop girls like Dua have proven in more recent years with non-#1 smashes like Levitating that demolish quick little #1's :clap3:

Yahoo and AOL had music services? Omg

But honestly I remember hearing Tik Tok and Empire everywhere as a kid unlike Bad Romance so I wasn’t shocked to find out it never went #1. Back when #1 hits were known by everybody.

It deserved to be #1 but at least Tik Tok and Empire State of Mind were also legit smash hits.

Being blocked by actual #1 hits > being blocked by a fraudulent #1.
