I do feel like I’m at an unfair disadvantage :chick3: .

I believe in my lyrics and they are coming from the heart, and maybe if I knew how to make instrumentals, album art work or professionally record my vocals, I would have higher marks because I’d be able to convey the mood and rhythm better. I know you guys say that doesn’t play a factor in the judging, but I can’t help but feel a little anxious about that.

BUT with all of that being said, I am trying to take the judges advice to improve but also still stay true to my story and authentic.

Hi! As someone who got his first song ranked at #32 out of like 33 contestants when I first played and would've been eliminated if not for the first round non-elimination thing, I feel like I should tell you that I was pretty discouraged and felt like I was at a disadvantage too.

So I'll tell you what I did next: First I wrote my heart out, then second, edit, edit and then edit till I feel like it was polished well enough and then lastly I read it from a different standpoint to see if it has all the right elements (after all this is more of a lyric/poetry writing competition rather than a songwriting one so you just have your words to convey the mood or emotions)

Well at least that's what I did after my entry got LASHED back then, I won't tell you to do the same thing but I want you to know that I've been there and judging by your reviews, you're already improving so you shouldn't stress yourself out too much

I know you guys say that doesn’t play a factor in the judging, but I can’t help but feel a little anxious about that.

BUT with all of that being said, I am trying to take the judges advice to improve but also still stay true to my story and authentic.

There’s been some good insight and advice in the replies already, but I thought I would just try to add a little more from my own perspective.

It’s really hard to try not to, but don’t compare yourself to these other people. Everybody competing is doing so in their own context and is in their own experience. It’s only a disservice to yours if you start comparing it to somebody else’s. I think most of the time, this game is what you make of it. You get back what you put in. So with that I think it’s great that you didn’t drop out and are committed. I think, if there is anything that I would emphasise the most, it’s not to have your eyes set on the idea of winning. Focus instead on what you are actually doing in the competition - creating. Marvel in your creations as opposed to aiming for glory. Not that I’m saying that this is what you are doing in any way, but just speaking from my own experience, this is what I have found to be the best attitude to have. These songs are yours, you wrote every word, and with that you have everything to be proud of, no matter whatever happens or whatever anybody else may say. Once you’ve made a piece of art, you’ve already succeeded. Who cares beyond that?

The other major thing that I’d want to say is remember who you are. Remember what makes you unique, what makes your writing special, why you even began writing in the first place or what gave you the desire to do so. And if you don’t have an answer for those things, then take the time to try and find it. I know when I first started, and when I was first taking part years ago, I wouldn’t have had a proper answer for those things. But I do now. Even if it takes years, question and nurture your own artistry. A lot of people who first take part in this game, take part again and again and again. That’s where you really see years of growth and when your writing collection expands. And in terms of actual writing, I’d say look at it the same way. What makes you unique, what is special about you? Use your own life experience to draw from, your own inspirations, all the things that fuel you and put those into the music. Every word an echo of your own self. Like, truly go inward and treat your writing as an extension of your being. The judges will see you on the page, and from there it is only up. This is probably all sounding quite philosophical but I mean it and hopefully it has some meaning for you too.

So you know that I’m not talking ****, for reference on my first season competing, I won the very first round, but I was then eliminated in the fourth round, because while I loved writing I wasn’t super experienced in it. That gave me the time that I needed to grow, to discover a sense of self in words, to know what I wanted to write and how I wanted to write... all while I waited for the next season. I competed in that next season and made it all the way to the final. I’ve now judged, hosted, done it all but I still started out as somebody who got eliminated in the fourth round. It truly means nothing because the good thing is, time is very kind to artistry, and there’s no knowing the ends to how much you can do, especially when you are standing at the beginning.
