Navyofbadgals Posted February 28, 2021 Posted February 28, 2021 new is indeed the best song of all time so it better rank high
clue Posted February 28, 2021 Posted February 28, 2021 Well here I am writing my last critiques for the season. :shy: Once again, I want to thank all of you for sticking with us and making this an ICONIC season. Love y'all Spoiler 2021 JESSIE WARE - SAVE A KISS One of the best songs of 2020. Absolutely love this for hope, too. Excellent choice :wap: LOONA - NEW Not my type of thing. Sorry!!!!! It's not awful, but it just didn't excite me at all. FLEETWOOD MAC - LANDSLIDE This classic!! Idk how I'm not tired of it at this point, but it still gets me. NATASHA BEDINGFIELD - UNWRITTEN Never thought much of this past it being the theme song for The Hills. Um. It's okay. Nothing I would ever listen to voluntarily. The Remix KELELA - NÍDIA_BLUE LIGHT_123 BPM It's alright. Definitely no contest for the original version. MIGUEL - WAVES - TAME IMPALA REMIX The only song here that's better than the original, that definitely wasn't a requirement but also it's definitely nice to stand out like this. Very good song. KID CUDI - DAY 'N' NITE - CROOKERS REMIX I feel the same way about this that I feel about the Kelela remix, it's alright, but the original song ***** all over it. Probably would EAT in the club? :lilbit: Kelly Rowland - WORK - FREEMASONS RADIO EDIT Absolutely not. Sorry!!!! 88 KACEY MUSGRAVES - LONELY WEEKEND One of my favorites off the album. Very relatable. GRIMES - BUTTERFLY HER BEST SONG?????????? FRANK OCEAN - FORREST GUMP This was pretentious and boring for me, sorry!!!! Not my type of thing at all. KACEY MUSGRAVES - OH, WHAT A WORLD It's cutesy! Used to love it a lot more. Kinda mad we had two GH songs when there so many more albums to pick from, but it's not a problem. :lilbit: **** Off, Mom! JOJO - LEAVE (GET OUT) Absolutely fits the category. It's a cute song. PVRIS - HALLUCINATIONS I've never heard of this person, but I loved that chorus. And I'm loving the fact that we've got two modern teen angst songs versus the two more traditional ones. Y'all did THAT, and unknowingly!!! AVRIL LAVIGNE - COMPLICATED I mean you knew you had snatched a classic when you sent this. CLAIRO - BAGS I mean you knew you had snatched a classic when you sent this. [2] Not sure minho is gonna like it, though. Ratings Magnet NELLY FURTADO - DO IT Very nice. One of the best songs on this album. I didn't know it had controversy, though. AVRIL LAVIGNE - GIRLFRIEND YASSSSS. Another genius Avril entry. Absolutely one of the best hits of all time. GESAFFALSTEIN & THE WEEKND - LOST IN THE FIRE A really, really flat song. Nothing interesting about it at all. I think I kinda was into it at one point, though??? I don't remember. It hasn't aged well, maybe that's the issue. AMY WINEHOUSE - REHAB I mean you knew you had snatched a classic when you sent this. [3] Spoiler @Fruity @Rence @Sanguine @luckystrike
Navyofbadgals Posted February 28, 2021 Posted February 28, 2021 @Fruity @Rence @Sanguine @luckystrike 2021 Spoiler SAVE A KISS Such a beautiful song. The instrumental keeps you intrigued throughout with its higher tempo and the details of the string instruments here and there coming together to form quite an amazing song And as always with Jessie Ware, the vocals are on point too. NEW Not even kidding when I say this is quite literally a perfect song idc. Unique without being inaccessible. The STANDARD!, and the lyrics are great as well. It's the collapse LANDSLIDE This is pretty and I love this full circle moment from having to endure a terrible landslide cover by d*gny early on in the season to at last being treated to this. Feels VERY right. UNWRITTEN the level for the hope category ahh this is a classic as well. It's a cute classic, might be less impressed by this than the other songs which speaks more to the love I have for every song here, than that this is in any way a bad song (because it's really cute). The standard simply too high for this category but still very cute REMIX Spoiler BLUE LIGHT hmm idk about this one ma! It's certainly very different but it's very inaccesible with these harsh sound effects and it doesn't help that the original is absolutely stunning. Not really obsessed with this one WAVES Incredibly smart choice because it truly still feels like a remix being totally different than the original, but it can also somewhat serve as its own song besides being just a remix. The production as expected is very currents-y so it's absolutely stunning. saftisfied customer DAY N NITE well this version actually smashed in the netherlands so I have some nostalgia for it. It goes off idc. Bit dated, and doesn't outdo the original, but I like this regardless. It's just some fun WORK I like the production here and there, and I also absolutely hate it every now and then. I think the chorus is esp well done but overall it's borderline annoying tbh sorree 88 Spoiler LONELY WEEKEND Unfortunately for you the other kacey song is miles better. This is still pretty cute, although one of the less eventful tracks on the album. BUTTERFLY Very cute. The album is still her best work imo, just super unique songs and this is no expection. The only downside is that some of the songs have somewhat aged but this still is cute enough ig FORREST GUMP if I critiqued LW for being not that eventful, then I have to point it out here as well. It's not really a.. riveting experience. Pretty corny as well OH WHAT A WORLD One of the most beautiful songs of all time. Just super calming and I love just the genuine love for the world around her. I love the use of the electronic elements here and there. Feel like country and electro is a deadly combination, but it's pulled off so well here, adding to the uniqueness of the track. Probably my favorite GH track, and one of my fav songs of all time as well. Great choice TEEN ANGST Spoiler LEAVE (GET OUT) now.. why the 2018 version.. I guess it's still somewhat cute but the original 2004 version is clearly superior not to mention that it has somehow aged better than this fairly recent version. You should've either specified you wanted to use a 2004 version and just use a YT link or moved on tbh. It's cute but this is a pretty decent category so idk idk idk HALLUCINATIONS well this was very cute. I was intrigued the whole time. Pretty nice choice COMPLICATED Honestly avril is the perfect choice for this category, I'm kinda surprised this is the only avril song here. It def nails the theme. I've never been a huge avril fan so I don't have a super strong connection to it but this is def a smart choice nevertheless. Hope it does well for you x BAGS It's no sofia but this is pretty cute nevertheless. Very indie'd, I like it CONTROVERSIAL Spoiler DO IT It's.. interesting at least. Some enjoyable elements here and there but it's also a tad bit annoying. It's no maneater or promiscuous. GIRLFRIEND Like I said.. I've never been a huge avril fan.. so this one besides a fun part here and there.. just kinda strikes me as.. really annoying. I'm sure there will be plenty of people who will like it but it's just not for me sorry LOST IN FIRE the controversial lyric in question was def.. a choice not that abel has ever been super strong lyrically but that was bad even for him. That said.. I can't make it not bop! It goes off idc. Was actually pretty hyped for the gesaffelstein project after this but it turned out pretty bad. This is nice tho REHAB I know the other girls are embarrassed you put them to shame with this absolute classic. Totally ***** on any songs in this category (and probably the best song sent this finale period.)
Navyofbadgals Posted February 28, 2021 Posted February 28, 2021 good luck to all the finalists and ty for a great season
smholiv Posted February 28, 2021 Posted February 28, 2021 minho's finale critiques chapter 1 : 2021 SAVE A KISS / NEW / LANDSLIDE / UNWRITTEN Spoiler Save A Kiss : my first impression was that this was pleasant, smooth, and a nice little synthpop song. then it gradually picked up and i realized that this is kind of a massive hit. her voice works so well for this production, and while it could've easily ended up just being a pleasant background song, there's really interesting work in the production that brings it to the next level. new : like bagels' said, music doesn't really get better than this - its the perfect song. every piece lands in the right place but it avoids feeling too glossy where it loses personality. this is one of the most meaningful songs i've ever heard for personal reasons, but even if i take a step back from that there's nothing here that i couldn't love. you snapped Landslide : we've had Fleetwood mac sporadically throughout this season, and they definitely have some classics so I see why you'd send this! I hate to say i'm tired of this but it doesn't hit as strongly as other songs of theirs would. That being said its still obviously good Unwritten : pass from me, awful chapter 2 : remix BLUE LIGHT / WAVES / DAY N NITE / WORK Spoiler Blue Light (123 BPM) : started kind of nice and ambient but there were some weird sound effects that drew me out of it. i liked the vocal editing at the chorus Waves (Tame Impala Remix) : its great! the original is very spacey and cool, so it makes sense to have a Tame Impala interpretation. i will say i think it drags a bit Day 'N' Nite (Crookers Remix) : song itself is cool but this remix is just there Work Freemasons Radio Edit : chorus is good, the rest is not, a no from me overall chapter 3 : 88 LONELY WEEKEND / BUTTERFLY / FORREST GUMP / OH WHAT A WORLD Spoiler Lonely Weekend : its a very simple, sweet song, i like it for that reason. I don't think its the best song from the album or anything but its good and enjoyable to listen to. I like the relatable lyrics, though at times Kacey's voice actually gets a little bit annoying for me in the chorus Butterfly : one of the best Art Angels tracks, its really pretty and works nicely with her vocal. I like her Visions work the most of course, but this is a highlight in her discography no matter what. Forrest Gump : its fine, i like it. I think it makes sense to send it but i'll be honest the non-singles are the weakest from this album for me not your fault though. Oh What A World : veryyy cool, love the spacey LSD feel. she did her THING with this album, the vocal editing and trippy elements work amazingly with the country pop sound. i like the fact that its about marveling about nature too, wish you all did a good job in the actual nature round. chapter 4 : teens LEAVE (GET OUT) / HALLUCINATIONS / COMPLICATED / BAGS Spoiler Leave (Get Out) : Wait bop. this is a classic honestly, probably my favourite song of hers! Hallucinations: heyyyyy. this is cute, it will probably suffer just based on what its up against but i would listen to it again Complicated : omg this is kind of theeee classic isn't it. surprising how it held up so well, perfect song for this round. Bags : WHAT THE FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA YOU DID ITTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT BBEBBFBFBF HEELLO!!!!!!!!!!!! HELLO HELLO TO YOU!!!! BEST SONG EVER I WILL NEVER EVER EVER LOVE A SONG AS MUCH AS I LOVE THIS LFDKSLJFSLJFLJFJFJFJ THEEEEEEEEE. OK THE SONGWRITING! No its eEVRYTHING, its so soft, warm and hopeful, she portrays love and longing in a way that is unmatched by anyone to me. this is so vividly mesmerizing, the epitome of a late summer golden hued sky. the framed picture reflecting the morning light drifting in from an open window. two hands cautiously intertwined at the peak of a grassy hill. the careful falling of autumn leaves on the lawn draped in fresh petrichor. the production's brilliant callbacks to an age of soft grunge rock with a shimmering level of detail invoking the flutter of a deep rooted crush, deep rooted like the willow trees arching over a shimmering pond. the brightness of the piano cuts the hazy guitars like the memory of each step your crush takes, the softness of her voice, the layered backing vocals are the warmth of the breeze, flowing through your hair. the lyrics themselves, less rom-com and more coming of age, like every moment in your life is meaningless without this feeling. there's so much VIVIDNESS to every single moment in this song, it makes you feel alive LKJSFJSF ALIVE!!!!! I SAY!!! whattttttt the ****!!!! omg iggnljdkfs OMG!!! you whyyyyyyy WHY!! you waited to the end didnt you. ALL OF YOU WAITED, you did it for me and i love you chapter 5 : controversy DO IT / GIRLFRIEND / LOST IN FIRE / REHAB Spoiler Do It : i mean i guess? its okay. not a highlight from this album by any means though and her voice is really grating here. Girlfriend : its a classic yes, is it good though? to me this didn't age that flatteringly. like its fine, i can listen to it, but i'm not rushing to play this when i think of an Avril song. nonetheless this might do better than others here. Lost in Fire : idk... its a pass from me, this does nothing for me at all, not awful but i'm left empty Rehab : honestly not my favourite of hers, but i do like it enough. epilogue thanks guys for a great season. i'm impressed, especially with these last couple of rounds. hope you're all proud of making it this far and wish you the best @Fruity @Rence @Sanguine @luckystrike
ughgabriel Posted February 28, 2021 Posted February 28, 2021 Imma do it by categories because we want this thread to have more posts
ughgabriel Posted February 28, 2021 Posted February 28, 2021 h☀️pe Jessie Ware - Save A Kiss I don’t understand the hype about her but honestly this is the best song I’ve heard of hers and the only one I’ve liked from this album. Really good song! It has a very dance-y nature but it has a very hypnotic element that makes the song get better as it progresses. I can’t believe it but this is a great song? A very pleasant surprise! LOONA - New This song is really cute. Sounds very bright and positive; it’s a very optimistic song and fits the theme perfectly. That chorus is so pretty! I do wish the production of the song was a little more ethereal because I feel like it can get a little too basic because of that beat. Still a really great song! Fleetwood Mac - Landslide It feels so right to see this song getting sent after someone dared to send the awful Dagny cover. I remember this song would make me cry every time I’d listen to it in 2018. Such a powerful song. It evokes a great variety of feelings; from hope to melancholy. It’s just so wonderful; my favorite song of theirs. Natasha Bedingfield - Unwritten When this song first started I was like wtf is this? but turns out I do know the song. That chorus is very empowering and upliting. Another cheerful and bright song that I enjoy! The verses on this one are a little annoying because her voice can sound a little grating. But it’s still a good song!
ughgabriel Posted February 28, 2021 Posted February 28, 2021 rem?x Kelela - INDIA_BLUE LIGHT_123 BPM The production on this remix is so distracting. I don’t know what they were going for but it sounded like a poorly mixed demo of a Shakira song for the World’s Cup. miguel - waves - Tame Impala Remix This is kind of a mess, lmao. There are parts that work and are really good but the overuse of some effects like wahwah, drowned out sound, etc are so overpowering, my ears were hurt by those moments and I’m not lying. But this remix made me want to listen to the original song because the melody is really good and his voice sounds great! Kid Cudi - Day ‘N’ Night - Crookers Remix / Radio Version Well I love the original song and while I can appreciate this remix because it doesn’t mess with the structure and great flow that the song has, I don’t think the 2012’d X Project remixes have aged that well for me. They sound a little cheap? But honestly, I enjoy it a lot and I’d get so hyped if I heard it at a party, while if I listened to the previous two remixes at a party I’d probably call my mom to pick me up. Kelly Rowland - Work - Freemasons Radio Edit The bollywood vibes at the beginning kinda sent me. This sounds like circus music, like I’m preparing myself to see some acrobacies. This is enjoyable, probably the second best in this group.
ughgabriel Posted February 28, 2021 Posted February 28, 2021 8? Kacey Musgraves - Lonely Weekend This is a very pretty song. I don’t know if there is anything that I would deem as outstanding when it comes to this song because while I think this is a good song I feel like I’ve heard dozens of songs that sound like this one. So I wouldn’t think this is the song that made the album get an outstanding score. Grimes - Butterfly *insert clue’s obsessed vocaroo* THE SCREAMS ON THE LAST CHORUS TRANSCENDENTAL Frank Ocean - Forrest Gump Don’t worry, Rence. You can still win SOTS Kacey Musgraves - Oh, What A World This one is definitely better than the other Kacey song. There are very interesting elements here that are not often used in country music that merge really well. It’s actually really beautiful. There’s so much ethereality within the instrumentals. I love this so much and I will be saving this song <3
ughgabriel Posted February 28, 2021 Posted February 28, 2021 TEEN ??ANGST JoJo - Leave (Get Out) This is such a mood. I’ve never heard this song before yet it takes me to a very specific time of my childhood/puberty. It’s an enjoyable campy track c: PVRIS - Hallucinations This is a different take on the theme from what I was expecting. When I read the challenge, my mind went directly to emo, punk ane rebel anthems about high school. But I do understand and take this as a more current take, like an indie coming of age movie which is cool too. I really liked the song and the teenage energy it encapsulates. Avril Lavigne - Complicated This is one of the first songs in english I ever heard and I was so in love with it but I could only listen to it at stores or malls because I didn’t know what it was called since I didn’t know english at all. One of the very first moments where music excited me is attached to this song. Clairo - Bags Yeah, and this is Gen Z’s take on the challenge. This is a really great song, honestly. I feel like this is the closest to the music I love most currently. Added to my library. Maybe you snapped and you also pandered to minho. A 2 for 1 slay!
miguel Posted February 28, 2021 Posted February 28, 2021 miguel's critiques hope Spoiler Save A Kiss Probably one of the better songs on WYP, but it's still nothing exceptional, much like the rest of her discography. It's definitely a cute enough song for this category though. new I actually found myself enjoying more than I thought I would? The production is very nice, the chorus especially. Landslide Kinda torn with this one because it's both very pretty and a tad boring at the same time. Unwritten that chorus took me BACK, plsss. Anyway, this is definitely a classic, but time has definitely been a bit rough on it :lilbit: remix Spoiler Blue Light this is fine. It has a bit too much going on for it to be totally enjoyable, though. waves ABSOLUTELY It's a great song on itself but it works just as well with this remix, very well done! Day 'N' Nite This would go OFF at a club tbh. I don't LOVE the verses but the chorus is very fun! Work The bollywood sounds are a bit annoying and kinda throw me off the song a bit, but otherwise, it bops a bit :lilbit: 88 Spoiler Lonely Weekend Not my favorite Kacey song at all. It's not bad whatsoever but it's a bit forgettable. Can't believe we got two Kacey entries for this category and none of them are Happy & Sad :nickicry: (maybe the banned letters had something to do with it but i'm too lazy to check!) Butterfly This is actually quite enjoyable for a Grimes song, cute! Forrest Gump I feel like you had better options from this album alone. This is fine but very one-noted and monotone. Oh, What A World YESSSS, easily my favorite song here. Very gorgeous both lyrically and sonically. Teen Angst Spoiler Leave (Get Out) yup yup yup, absolute classic, great choice, love it Hallucinations omg omg, I came into this with low expectations because I thought it was gonna be another basic ass song like everything I've heard from her... but this is an actual SERVE. It goes OFF. Added to my liked songs. Complicated Absolutely?!?! The bigger, better classic here. Absolute banger. You ATE. Bags it's a Clairo song, boring and unremarkable x Controversy Spoiler Do It I'm sure this is one of those classics that was big in NA that I completely missed. This does nothing for me and I really didn't enjoy it at all. Very dated. Girlfriend it's a cute little bop Lost In The Fire as far as The Weeknd songs go, this is pretty standard. Not bad at all but nothing really impressive. Doesn't stand out at all, but at least it's not terribly bad like Do It :kii1: Rehab YESSSSSSS OMGGGGG, this is one of the songs i've been wanting to send for the whole damn season. Talented, amazing, unique, never been done before, etc.
Staryu Posted February 28, 2021 Posted February 28, 2021 Posting one group at a time :somepoints: Jessie Ware - Save A Kiss - A modern classic This song is euphoric, the best song of her career, I love it so much Loona - New - New New Fleetwood Mac - Landslide - An old classic I love Fleetwood Mac, this song reminds me of my grandma :crypoor: Natasha Bedingfield - Unwritten - A classic Not only an amazing song but also the theme song to The Hills, iconic!
Staryu Posted February 28, 2021 Posted February 28, 2021 Remixes are fun :somepoints: Kelela - Blue Light (123 BPM) - I love Kelela, I enjoyed this remix except 1 little part, the guy gasping or air or w/e is going on with those noises Miguel - Waves (Tame Impala Remix) - :winnie: This is great, very chill, Miguel is sexy, even in remixes Kid Cudi - Day 'N' Nite (Crookers Remix) - This is cute, I bopped a little, I definitely enjoy the original more. Kelly Rowland - Work Freemasons Radio Edit - Yas come on Grand Theft Auto radio queen, this is such a bop
Staryu Posted February 28, 2021 Posted February 28, 2021 Kacey Musgraves - Lonely Weekend - Me every weekend I relate to this song alot actually Grimes - Butterfly - Grimes vocals are really cute on this, like Princess Peach singing, and this song is overall very pleasant and cute for a Grimes song, very good Frank Ocean - Forrest Gump - This is lovely and I love Frank and kinda one-note yeah Kacey Musgraves - Oh, What A World - This hymn I get such a feeling of peace while listening to it, Kacey said world peace
Staryu Posted February 28, 2021 Posted February 28, 2021 Jojo - Leave (Get Out) - Very on theme, also a 2000s classic, Jojo really slayed these vocals PVRIS - Hallucinations - Wow I actually enjoyed this a lot but it's the unfamiliar one here for me, and I feel bad ranking it low but Avril Lavigne - Complicated - My childhood, a classic, amazing, iconic, teen angst 100%, incredible, beautiful. Clairo - Bags - Minho's wish came true :praise: I love the chillness, it's a very relaxing song. It has very teen indie movie vibes. Clairo reminds me of minho so there's positive feelings associated with the song as well
Auburn Posted February 28, 2021 Posted February 28, 2021 CATEGORY 1: 2021 HOPE Spoiler JESSIE WARE - SAVE A KISS beautiful song, she really came for blood LOONA - NEW I really really like it, but it’s the only one I don’t have a previous attachment to and this category is definitely the strongest, sorry FLEETWOOD MAC - LANDSLIDE this is such a classic, and it’s really interesting to see it sent here for this specific theme NATASHA BEDINGFIELD - UNWRITTEN whewwww, she did what she had to do CATEGORY 2: THE REMIX Spoiler KELELA - NÍDIA_BLUE LIGHT_123 BPM this bops, I like it MIGUEL - WAVES (TAME IMPALA REMIX) I’ve always found this remix a bit underwhelming, crucify me now KID CUDI - DAY N NITE (CROOKERS REMIX) also good, but I feel like it didn’t add much excitement to the original, which is better KELLY ROWLAND - WORK (FREEMASONS RADIO EDIT) nooooo you really sent THE serve here CATEGORY 3: 88 Spoiler KACEY MUSGRAVES - LONELY WEEKEND the beauty GRIMES - BUTTERFLY hmmm, it’s my least fave in this category sorry FRANK OCEAN - FORREST GUMP you know, honestly I would have liked to see Bad Religion more, but this is serviceable KACEY MUSGRAVES - OH, WHAT A WORLD the beauty [2] CATEGORY 4: TEEN ANGST Spoiler JOJO - LEAVE (GET OUT) it’s THE classic of our childhoods PVRIS - HALLUCINATIONS I just heard this the other day, and I really like it AVRIL LAVIGNE - COMPLICATED no wait, this is the classic of our childhoods (but Leave is my fave) CLAIRO - BAGS I think it’s a bit shoehorned into this category sorry minho, there’s not really anything angsty about it to me CATEGORY 5: CONTROVERSY Spoiler NELLY FURTADO - DO IT this bop omg AVRIL LAVIGNE - GIRLFRIEND yassssss, well you won GESAFFELSTEIN - LOST IN THE FIRE I kinda feel like this goes nowhere tbh, but it’s nice I guess AMY WINEHOUSE - REHAB you hit the category on the nose here, but it’s not one of my fave Amy songs overall this was an excellent finale imo, thanks for a great season everyone @Fruity @luckystrike @Rence @Sanguine
Staryu Posted February 28, 2021 Posted February 28, 2021 Nelly Furtado - Do It - I actually stan Nelly and Loose and I love this cute bop, I had no idea it was plagiarized Avril Lavigne - Girlfriend - Another 2000s classic, it's a bop, it might have aged a smidge but I still white girl rock out to it Gesaffelstein, The Weeknd - Lost in the Fire - ugh this is such a bop but again, a victim of just me knowing/loving the other songs more :crypoor: Nostalgia winning again, you can't stand it Amy Winehouse - Rehab - Winner obviously, Amy is incredibly unique and talented and gone way too soon this song is insanely catchy, the production gives me everything too.

Otherwise it's basically a Currents track Kid Cudi - Day 'N' Nite (Crookers Remix): Kinda basic, the original > Kelly Rowland - Work Freemasons Radio Edit: Cute bop, the chorus slaps Kacey Musgraves - Lonely Weekend: Very cute Grimes - Butterfly: Cute, not one of my faves from the album tho Frank Ocean - Forrest Gump: Cute [3] Kacey Musgraves - Oh, What A World: Here's the tea Jojo - Leave (Get Out): It's the classic PVRIS - Hallucinations: Meh Avril Lavigne - Complicated: It's the classic [2] Clairo - Bags: Decent Nelly Furtado - Do It: A 2006'd banger Avril Lavigne - Girlfriend: Controversial classic Gesaffelstein, The Weeknd - Lost in the Fire: I like this song but it fits the theme the least imo.
