  • Troye Sivan - Lucky Strike:  AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. This is like, my second favourite song of all time. Deadly serious!!!!!!!!! The soft, sugary, warm, EUPHORIC melody + unique fairytale-like production combined with the slightly heart-breaking, vulnerable, raw and beautiful lyrics, which are somehow simultaneously simple yet complex and FULL of weight? When you look beyond the obvious, there is a hint of joy and ******ry in the references to his present here, and the fact that the central lyrics are framed around a cigarette,,, as if his attachment to his lover is comparable to a nicotine addiction... one of the most addictive substances on the planet ? This song kind of embodies that connection and the comfort it brings. The way that the bridge BUILDS from the vocal layering in the second half is an extended moment of basically ecstasy, and like, these ad libs are why I stan Troye... He sounds HEAVENLY. This song just hits so hard and I'm not even emotionally invested in a single soul on this planet rn, like this track kind of makes me excited to fall in love again and experience this journey???? OMG!! CfwzhSR.gif
  • Amy Winehouse - Back to Black: truly a stretch but also truly a god-level song so maybe it was worth it?????
  • Billie Eilish - xanny: this has always been kind of awful, like she definitely could've kept this tbh. it definitely doesn't work as well as some of the other minimalist songs on the record. generally it just screams try-hard edgy teen lyrics with awkward + boring production
  • St. Vincent - Young Lover: a bit jarring but i do enjoy this when i'm in the right mood
  • The Weeknd - Can’t Feel My Face: a LOT of a bop!
  • Selena Gomez - Sober: cutesy.. lil bit basic :lilbit:
  • Tinashe - 2 On: wheeeeeeeew collapsing it still hits to this day
  • St. Vincent - Pills: that melody is a TAD annoying but also a bit of a bop. like I can't deny that it's fun and well done
  • Labrinth & Zendaya - All For Us: I've never heard this... I'm gonna have to give it a few more listens. the eclectic production definitely made an impression but it's not necessarily a great one? we'll see!

It's cute

Amy Winehouse - Back to Black: A classic

Billie Eilish - xanny: This is so ****ing awful :deadbanana:when Billie's bad she's BAD

St. Vincent - Young Lover: A SONG. Love this so much and the bridge/final hook :winnie:

The Weeknd - Can’t Feel My Face: Bop

Selena Gomez - Sober: This was an instant fave of mine when the album came out, and it's still good

Tinashe - 2 On: I'm mad that you snatched this from me, but can't deny it's an amazing song! Again, the (too short) bridge :winnie:

St. Vincent - Pills: Young Lover is better. I do still like this, but some parts of it are unnecessary and it doesn't keep your attention the whole time

Labrinth & Zendaya - All For Us: No

Spoiler

TROYE SIVAN - LUCKYSTRIKE

Nothing special, for me. It's cute synth pop, but it doesn't stand out at all. Love the gay lyrics, of course, though.

AMY WINEHOUSE - BACK TO BLACK

The choice on everyone's lips!!!! So lemme start out by saying that this is one of the best "sound revival" songs of all time. The drama, the vocals, the melodies, it's all there.

This song immediately stuck out to me for the round, so I'm not surprised it was sent. I feel like it can be looked at on its surface as just a song about a breakup/being sad, etc. But I think when you actually look into it, it's also about drug use. We have the camp of people who believe that Winehouse was literally singing about going back to black tar heroin use, so that immediately validates this song choice for this round. But if that's not enough, we have the following lyrics, "You love blow and I love puff." Now, some will argue that that's simply just one lyric and it's not enough to justify the song choice. BUT.. we also have "And life is like a pipe / And I'm a tiny penny rollin' up the walls inside." Is she talking about delving into crack cocaine? Is that a crack pipe that she's referring to? We also have words from Winehouse herself, " guess I went back to a very black few months, you know, doing silly things, as you do when you’re 22 and young and in love." Would it be wild to assume she meant drug use by "doing silly things"? You be the judge. This is a valid entry in my book. I think this was a brave choice and it's kinda what Vanishing Letters is about, at its heart, as a franchise. Discourse.

BILLIE EILISH - XANNY

I love the lyrics and the sentiment behind this song, and it's not awful sonically so cheers bruv.

ST. VINCENT - YOUNG LOVER

This is cute!!! It's definitely one of the songs on this album that felt less like a song and more like an unfinished idea, though.

THE WEEKND - CAN'T FEEL MY FACE

Absolute classic. This was another song that immediately jumped out to me as a possible choice.

SELENA GOMEZ - SOBER

Very cute!! Would've smashed back in the day.

TINASHE - 2 ON

Imagine how tired we are... it's a great song, still. I won with it a few seasons ago, let's see if it happens again!!!

ST. VINCENT - PILLS

Cute. It gets super annoying very fast.

LABRINTH & ZENDAYA - ALL FOR US

Not my type of thing. Very Sprite commercial.

miguel's critiques

Lucky Strike - this absolute pop masterpiece....

Back to Black - this is a gorgeous, amazing, beautiful song, etc... but it's also a bit of a copout of this round's theme, so i'll probably rank it lower because of that.

xanny - def one of billie's worst. the chorus alone is v grating.

Young Lover - it's fine, a bit too much at moments, but i like it

Can’t Feel My Face - hugeeee bop, still goes off a bit

Sober - this used to be one of my favorites when Revival dropped, its aged a bit since then, but i still like it. Demi's >

2 On - i find this quite overrated, it has never done much for me, but it's not bad by any means either.

Pills - pls i'm torn here because the chorus is AWFUL and very annoying, but the verses are very fun and the guitar solo was excellent. The outro also didn't do much for me.

All For Us - i'm surprised this is getting so panned, i actually quite enjoy this, it's a very interesting/captivating listen

Troye Sivan - Lucky Strike - it’s cute :jamming:

Amy Winehouse - Back to Black - a classic :jonny5:

Billie Eilish - xanny - have always thought the hate for this was unwarranted (although i used to like it a biT more)

St. Vincent - Young Lover - it’s cute (although not one of my favorites from her)

The Weeknd - Can’t Feel My Face - a classic :jamming:

Selena Gomez - Sober - lorde, demi, p!nk, broods, etc. outsold me thinks... not terrible by any means but a bit generique

Tinashe - 2 On - a classic :WAP:

St. Vincent - Pills - like it more than the other song from her me thinks :jamming:

Labrinth & Zendaya - All For Us - emmy winner zendaya did that :clap3:

LUCKY STRIKE

Brilliant :jonny:

the way I wouldn't have even thought of this but its absolutely perfect for the round.  Really great bop, and the third part of my favourite trilogy/run on Bloom.  I love the 80s synthpop sound here and think it compliments his voice.  Troye isnt' someone who is super expressive in vocal delivery, but it works to his advantage here?  There's a lazy/laid back late summer feel.  Sounds like something from a coming of age movie in the best way.

BACK TO BLACK

clue spilled :jonny2:

can't stay much more that hasn't already been said, but this is basically the best Amy song i've ever heard and will probably always remain my favourite.  Her vocal delivery is INSANE with the lyrics.  The way its sets up this mood is incredible and something that no one who tries this sound since has really done for me.

XANNY

the 1-2-3 PUNCH :deadbanana2:

INSANITY!!! words can't really describe how much i love this album, and how its probably the best debut album ever (maybe tied with Clairo's).  This song is kind of unusual in that it comes right after the big bop in the tracklist, and I guess in some respects you think that's going to ruin the flow, but i like it.  I like her "own perspective" lyricism here, I love the effects on her voice in the chorus, and the minimal, somewhat distorted production at times.  There's something so gripping about her long, sweeping songs like this - you're getting into the headspace of a SoCal suburban teen wandering the street-lamp lit sidewalks reflecting on your nihilistic angst.  It brings me to a headspace I've found myself in, and breaks down all the different struggles about growing up.  She'll do one thing really well and that's create the concept she has in mind and fully commit to bring it to life.

YOUNG LOVER

it's no Los Ageless but i can see how combines her approach to pop hooky synthpop with some of the familiar lyricism you'd see on some of her earlier two albums. the bridge is cool, but the song itself drags and feels unfocused

CAN'T FEEL MY FACE

definitely the clear choice, even if I would've preferred other Weeknd songs.  I never fully got into him during this era, but at the same time i appreciated songs that sounded like this at the time.  To me, he's topped himself since, especially with After Hours, however... this is definitely one of those times you can't really deny a groove.

SOBER

on one hand its a product of its time and sounds very mid-10s, on the other its pretty catchy and i'm liking listening to it :hi:  I don't know if I absolutely love this song, especially when its next to absolute HITS like "Good For You", but in terms of this challenge, its strong enough

2 ON

pretty much genius :skull: Like what can i say here?  it nails the challenge on the head, its a certified modern classic, it's probably still one of her best songs... you did that.  Let me fill up airtime by talking about the song though.  THe beat STILL hits so hard even after all this time (amazing), the chorus is sooo subdued but in a way that builds and builds, the verses are spectacular (and the feature too). each time I hear this song I'm reminded of the brilliance that was Aquarius, and I look forward to her next step. I'm loving this round let me just say, it'll be hard to rank.

PILLS

to me this makes more sense as the St. Vincent song of the round.  giving me trendy ~milennial shop vibes, it's a little annoying but I think I like it a bit more than the other song

ALL FOR US

it's a strong round which makes this sort of fade into the background for me sadly. there's  interesting elements to the production, and i do find it to be cool in that aspect, yet its also a little too chaotic without reward

 Troye Sivan - Lucky Strike

well.. I'm not vibing with this. It's not a total disaster, I like the 80s synthy production here, it's very neatly done. But his delivery is dead as hell and I'm not a fan of it. This round is also decently strong so this one.. just doesn't do it for me

Amy Winehouse - Back to Black

I'm mad you wasted this amazing song in a round where it doesn't really fit :shakeno:

Billie Eilish - xanny

VERY underrated. The production here goes from barely being present, to totally distorting her vocals.. it's very genius me thinnks

St. Vincent - Young Lover

Aged surprisingly well for MASS standards. A very well constructed song, no  complaints xo

The Weeknd - Can’t Feel My Face

MJ was shaking a bit here, good on you for snatching a more obvious choice. should do well xoxo

Selena Gomez - Sober

cute? I do agrih with Minho that it is a product of its time, but it's still decent today

 Tinashe - 2 On

yes

 St. Vincent - Pills

yes

Labrinth & Zendaya - All For Us

ermmmm. This is.. interesting at least :thing: the reality is that it works very well as a soundtrack used in the episode, but it's not strong enough to stand its own as just a song for VL. In a pretty strong round, this sticks out like sore thumb even if it's not that bad of a song :thing:

Lucky Strike - Doesn't really do anything for me. His mumbly delivery is annoying and the vocal production sounds cheap. Cute H&M bop I guess, not the worst.

Back to Black - One of my favorite albums ever and I can't even count the times I cried to it or describe how much it helped me. That said I've been strict about songs matching theme and this one does not :sorry:

xanny - Yeah it's by far her worst song. I can't stand the lyrics, it's just cringe all around. Blergh.

Young Lover - Looooooooove this song :heart2:  Perfectly describes a codependent relationship where both are addicts, and how even beautiful scenery like birds singing and a trip to Paris are clouded in darkness and trauma because of it

Can't Feel... - 15 year old me was SO confused when everyone started saying this song was about coke :skull: Aged really well and I love the chorus! This must've been a really confusing release for Weeknd fans though kii

Sober - Loved it when Revival came out, but like most of the album, time hasn't been kind to it. The verses are good, but I can't stand her vocals in the chorus. But it's quite decent overall.

2 On - A MPG moment. It makes sense that this was her breakout hit as it combines her mellow, nocturnal alt-R&B sensibilities that she perfected on her pre-debut mixtapes with the 2014 trend of Mustard club hits. Love her rap-ish delivery here and the water-y production and the strings. Perfect for this round.

Pills - This song is an annoying mess but I love it :michael: Very catastrophic self destructive millennial teas.

All For Us - This song represents everything I hate about this self-absorbed, faux-deep, gen-z pandering, edgy overrated mess of a show. Zendaya ate in this though.
