GreatestLoveofAll Posted December 21, 2020 Author Posted December 21, 2020 Heyyy! Here is the time for my countdown of 2020 material that i said was coming. I found that i ended having farrr more than 10 songs and albums that I wanted to share so I decided a brief over look at the several songs and albums that made my bubbling under! Many of the songs on my list are pretty much singles since counting alnum tracks wouldf make this too long and more repetitive. I tried to keep one song per artist but not sure how much that work and there will be some Q4 2019 releases here too. Bubbling Under Songs of 2020 25. "Broken Glass"- Kygo (ft. Kim Petras) 24. "Never Gonna Break My Faith"- Aretha Franklin 23. "Dance"- Toni Braxton 22. "Kings & Queens"- Ava Max 21. "Rockstar"- DaBaby ft. Roddy Ricch 20. "Fever"- Dua Lipa & Angele 19. "Never Lost"- CeCe Winans 18. "What You Know Bout Love"- Pop Smoke 17. "Cold"- Leslie Odom ft. Sia 16. "Loyal Brave True"- Christina Aguilera 15. "In Your Eyes"- The Weeknd 14. Mss Patti LaBelle is a legend for a reason. Although I find a lot of her material somewhat bland, the highs are just out of this world. I'm talking If Only You Knew, Over the Rainbow, FOREVER YOUNG (my absolute favourite!), This Christmas, I Don't Do Duets, We're Not Making Love Anymore, You Are My Solid Ground... She is such a powerhouse vocalist, a performer and a humorist, if you ask me. Watching her live performances is something else... When it comes to Chaka Khan, not sure if you already know it, but I'd definitely recommend one of my favourites Free Yourself -- a 90's house banger featured in To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar film. It's a MUST! (Half of the soundtrack is actually quite good, and the film is a mid-90s classic. ) Also other two, more mellow, 70s classics: A Woman in a Man's World and Roll Me Through the Rushes. Also, your avi made me think of (and revisit) Whitney's Million Dollar Bill. + Listen to CeCe Winans' He's Not On His Knees Yet. It's an absolutely stunning, STUNNING song. I always hoped Whitney would cover this (although CeCe sounds like her on moments.). Ok well nice to know! I might check them out next year as Ive been inspired trying to listen to full bodies of work these day so i'll add them on my list as well as those two 70s classics you mentioned. Im such a soft rock/adult contemporary fan that its crazy how there are some songs that i've never heard but are exactly my type. Miss Patti IS legend! In my opinion of the greatest instruments known in modern music history resides in her. Its almost inhuman how she's able to be such a powerhouse- truly one of a kind and a freak of nature in the most respectable way possible. i'll definitely get into those songs you listed- more patti is never a bad thing for me. Her rendition of "If You Asked Me To", "Over the Rainbow" (live of course- she has this one performance of it in the 70s i believe where she goes OFF- if i had ever gotten the spirit before it when then. Like she was all over the place- literally), "New Attitude" and "I Think About You" which deserved to be a smash hit whenever year it came out imo. My avi is from one of her more obscure early 2000s ballads called "Try It On My Own" actually! And "Million Dollar Bill" is truly underrated- I dont see how someone could hate such a club banger tbh And chile, lemme tell you. Before I knew Whitney (she and CeCe do sound alike fr, dont they? its that church-influence i tell ya), before i got in the stan world, CeCe Winans was my fave. I grew up on gospel and her music was on all the time- I know that song and the album its on Alabaster Box like the palm of my hand almost. She truly is an amazing singer and she will always have special place in my memories.

GreatestLoveofAll Posted December 23, 2020 Author Posted December 23, 2020 Top Songs of 2020 Hello again to my first half of my countdown! I see some controversy already about the bubbling under () so maybe the top 10 will be even more triggering iconic! Here is my 10-8. 10. Underdog- Alicia Keys I'll be honest, I hadn't found most of Alicia's material after "Girl On Fire" (which in my head came out around the same time as "No One" for some reason) very appealing. It wasn't bad of course, but nothing really stuck with me. However "Underdog" has everything that makes Alicia an artist for the long run. The storytelling, the catchy chorus and the rousing production all make this one of 2020's best. SHout out to her Black Lives Matter/Juneteenth song "Perfect Way to Die" too- that song had me real emotion this summer and really sums up how so many people feel in these times of tension and distress. 9. All I Want- Olivia Rodrigo (from the Highschool Musical: The Musical: The Series) Ok hey. I watched a good chunk of this in January/February so I can see what they did with the storyline and cuties . It's truly not bad tbh, but i never finished it cause I quickly realized why I never was a huge fan of the original in the first place (the damn characters mostly). The songs however, were actually very well done though and several of them I found myself enjoying. This one song that went viral on TikTok especially was my favorite. It appeals to me in its simple, yet rather complicated topic of finding a guy who's perfect for you and Miss Rodrigo serves vocals so safe to say I was impressed. 8. Midnight Sky- Miley Cyrus What a lead! I was very surprised how much Miley impressed me this year. She was giving me all I wanted and more without me even knowing I wanted it. #8 seems pretty low, but that's only because I wanna shine some light on other, more obscure songs... plus the album as a whole gets a lot more love later on so. The aggressive "LOVED BY YOU"'s are iconic already and the single cover is such an aesthetic if only COVID wasn't a thing I'd love to see this performed on tour.

Mr. Blue_Shirt Posted December 26, 2020 Posted December 26, 2020 On 12/4/2020 at 4:41 AM, GreatestLoveofAll said: Ok time for another update! I'm SUPER grateful for the positive reaction you guys it means a lot. Now time for some more boring ballads classic songs. Second Batch 6. I Knew I Loved You- Savage Garden Ok but I was never a fan of R&B music from the late 90s and early 2000s for several reasons. Yet hearing this track was enough to really change course for me. The chill production, the earnest way he sounds. There was an appreciation thread for this artist a few days ago and I said then and i’ll say it now: its miles better than Truly Madly Deeply. Reveal hidden contents 7. When You're Gone- Avril Lavinge I used to hear snippets of this song all the time on those old dramatic YouTube videos made by random fanbases when I was a kid, but never cared for it as they used to be annoying. Listening to this song on its own though it's clear why they would always use it. It's heartbreaking the emotions Avril is making you feel and more than once i’ve found myself mellowed by it. 10/10, the Canadian Christian artist did. Reveal hidden contents 8. National Anthem- Lana Del Rey I listened to Lana’s whole discography via Spotify and YT this year so I discovered hundreds of her songs. But I especially loved the ones on her breakthrough album, Born to Die and this one is one of the top tier gems. She writes so poetically and dystopian like yet it’s hard to not get drawn to how different she sounds especially compared to what I usually listen to. Reveal hidden contents 9. (You Drive Me) Crazy- The Stop Remix- Britney Spears I was also on a Britney bunge this year. Sure, i'm no stan and have a kii on her once in a while, but after watching a fan made documentary and getting into some of her well liked songs, I’ve had a revelation on the greatness of this woman’s catalogue. I heard this version before the original and it's far better anyways so that’s why I chose it. The thumping bass, the stank of the ad libs and the over danceable fire to it makes it one of the best 2020 tracks for me even though it came out some 15 years ago. Reveal hidden contents 10. Too Little Too Late- 2018- Jojo Ok but i’ve never heard the original but I already know that this is better because Jojo already has a pretty thin, light voice and im not sure i’d be a fan of that kind of voice on a 14 year old girl. Nonetheless, she went off on this and once again shows that she’s one of the very best and most underrated voices out there today. The conviction in which she sings it is commanding and the groove is pretty neat as well. Reveal hidden contents On 12/8/2020 at 8:40 PM, GreatestLoveofAll said: Hey! I finally remembered last night that I had this still going, but good thing I had chosen the songs I wanted and had them ready. Once again, I hope you guys like the choices and comment on your favorites or ones you are interested in. Third Batch 11. Your Song- Cissy Houston Is it bad that i’m not a huge fan of the original? Like it’s a lovely recording and Elton has grown on me IMMENSELY in the last year but it's his biggest classic and I cant seem to get into it. Its covers however? Golden. I heard this when my 60s divas playlist ended and Spotify recommended it to me. While some people would be like of course you think a song by Whitney Houston’s mother is amazing, but in reality I was never a fan of Cissy Houston’s voice. Here though she shows a sense of refinery yet soulfulness that only a gospel-trained professional could possess. She did this lyrical masterpiece justice. Reveal hidden contents https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sz9zajLTQ2Y 12. Brown Eyes- Destiny's Child I haven't listened to a full Destiny’s Child album beside their Christmas album before this year. As a matter of fact, I was on a crusade of 70s-90s R&B once again when this beautiful song came on. Its pretty basic tbh and certainly doesn't stand out among the grand scheme of things, but as always the harmonies these three women could do was never too much and could always save the day. Reveal hidden contents https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvbUYXE5_cE 13. September Song- JP Cooper I was really conternding on whether to put this on my list. I could have bet a whole bunch that I heard this a while ago, but I really couldn't pin down a moment so at worst, I’ll categorize at a re-discovery. It's a cute song with a nostalgic feel. It feels so warm and at the same time kinda sad in how he has memories with someone who doesn't remember him (at least that’s what i’m getting from it) and it hits cause I tend to have that lingering fear. Reveal hidden contents https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XxwhwIhQq2s 14. Hold On- Wilson Phillips I had a feeling there would be some people who would love this song. It’s pretty old (30 years now) but fits the vibe that many of you guys enjoy in older pop music. I love the harmonies during the chorus- it feels so fulfilling. Reveal hidden contents https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uIbXvaE39wM 15. Work It- Missy Elliot I knew of Missy Elliot for a long time since I joined the pop culture world. But I didn't bother to experience the excellence of her lyrical power- like you sit and wonder who on earth thinks of rhymes so outlandish yet so unique? I don't listen to early female rap, but I dont think many can say they can write and perform a jam this good and creative. The way I was SHOOk as hell when I realized she had one of the lines reversed in the chorus. A shame it spent 10 weeks at #2. 16. Love Is On the Way- Billy Porter (Sorry the pic is so big lmao) I first saw Billy in Pose (there’s a song from that show on here too) and I was a fan of his character and him as a person- he’s come so far in his career and to be finally recognized for the talent he has is amazing. But I don't know if its because of age or style, but I had NO clue he had chops like this until I heard this powerhouse. This man was singing upper chest belts with ease and precision and emotion and POWER on this song. My girl Celine did a version of this and while her’s is lovely and more well-known, Mr. Porter stands head and shoulders above any attempt of this song that’s ever been done. It’s a song about moving on and in a way finding self love and appreciation. The love that’s on the way is love for himself. I'm a huge fan of some of these songs and a few are by some artists I never thought I'd ever care to listen to on my own time. 17. Starman- David Bowie I discovered this UK classic by this UK legend while watching The Crown season three I believe so the irony is all over this one. I was captivated by the strange sound, the imperfect vocals and was beyond shook when I realized it was by David Bowie. I knew he was a legend and pioneer in music but I was never into that kind of music and so I never gave him a listen. But this song is so alien, so mystical but at the same time real fun when you listen to it. The whole child-like focus on the track makes it peculiar, but then again, it’s David. I shouldn't have expected anything less. Rest in peace, icon. Reveal hidden contents https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBKEt3MhNMM 18. It's My House- Diana Ross Miss Ross the Boss has numerous songs on this list, but this slick, funky 70s banger takes the cake as the best innuendos i’ve heard probably ever in a song this old. Reminds me a lot of 1993 Janet Jackson. She is such a legend this woman. Reveal hidden contents 19. Layla (Acoustic; MTV Unplugged 1992)- Eric Clapton I don't think any of you really listen to this kind of music and the ones that do probably aren't checking here, but this song is a classic tune. Its pretty simple and the topic about a straight man simping for a woman that belonged to another man (who has relations with someone who will be on this list btw) isn't anything i can relate too, this guitar-driven, steady voiced acoustic version is brilliant and super catchy to me- far better than the original and so very different too. Weirdly or maybe not, I first discovered it on the way to school from my bus driver’s playlist. Reveal hidden contents 20. How Long Will I Love You- Ellie Goulding I heard this song on a random playlist and the one complaint I have is that it feels so short. The laid back singing, the sweet chorus and the sentimentality really made it one of my fave Ellie songs. “How long will I love you? As long as stars are above you” makes me emotional every time. Reveal hidden contents https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=an4ySOlsUMY 21. Hellfire (from Hunchback of Notre Dame) I was going through some of the Disney villain songs one day when this song came on. I hadn't seen the movie in years and even then it was only like a small portion yet hearing the dark, twisted and complicated lyrics and meaning wrapped it all up for me, at least plot wise. It surprises me so much that Disney let a song like this in one of their movies considering the content and I'm not the only one because I saw a video analyzing the song and character Frollo and the person said that what makes this song the creepiest yet greatest Disney villain song ever was that Frollo wasnt some wizard or witch or supernatural being. He is a human doing all this and that’s horrifying. Reveal hidden contents 22. Lucky- Britney Spears Earlier this year I watched a fan-made documentary on Britney. It covered her controversy and fame in the 2000s and compared how she was treated and talked about and simply done so terribly to other fallen female starlets, all who at some point died from that insane, inhuman pressure and for the first time, I really felt so sad for Britney and all she’s gone through. They played this song during the documentary and it really hits at the end how much it reflected her life and career whether she knew it or not when she recorded it. I truly think it's a really heartfelt song even if it has a pretty standard Britney pop sound. Reveal hidden contents On 12/14/2020 at 5:44 PM, GreatestLoveofAll said: Hey hey! Thanks again for the love. Just realized this is the second week of December and so I'm going to have work coming in like crazy. Do I care? Maybe, maybe not the point is it's hopefully gonna make my updates more regular and what not! So here's batch five and thank you guys for the support. Batch Five 23. Back for Good- Take That I don't care for 90s white boy bands. They tend to get on my nerves- especially the hair and the clothes, which to me were absolutely ridiculous. Yet I love this song, maybe because of its maturity and familiarity to other songs from this era. Its been called a pop masterpiece in recent years and I have to abide by such a claim. Reveal hidden contents 24. Back Together- Jill Scott This is very much old-school soul/R&B and i'm almost ashamed it took me this long to discover this masterpiece. What can I say? I felt so much gospel and soul in this vocal performance, she could have been cussing someone out and I’d love it. I'm hoping she has fans on this site somewhere cause this is amazing. Reveal hidden contents 25. Love Child- Glee Cast/Unique/Alex Newell I rewatched Glee for the second time last year and heard many songs I didn't catch for the first time. Last year one of my top tracks was the “Bitch Is Back/Dress You Up” mashup featuring the amazing Unique played by Alex Newell. I loved everything that went into that song and this cover of The Supremes late 60s social conscious classic is no different. Alex rips through this song with a ferocity as if it was his own and his gown in the scene? Dazzling. Also, check out his new single “Mama Told Me”- it’s a banger with vocals for those who are into that. Reveal hidden contents 26. Imagine- John Lennon This song was so very last minute- I legit heard it a week before I put it down because my teacher was talking about John on the anniversary of his death. I still think The Beatles both as a group and individually are overrated to the heavens, but this song deserves all the love and respect it gets. The way it resounds some near 50 years is really what makes it timeless and magical. Reveal hidden contents 27. You'll Never Be Alone- Anastacia Once again, I should let you guys know I love big voices and a good song about love, friendship and resilience. It’s the formula of the biggest hit songs for some of our favorite divas so haters of that can go take several seats . Anastacia starts off mellow and ends up belting with some serious soul and confidence, yet the strength and personality of her voice is constant. Reveal hidden contents 28. I Am Woman- Helen Reddy It’s weird: I’ve been seeing this song everyone for a bit now but the year i get into it is the year we lose Ms. Reddy. This feminist anthem remains the boldest and best declaration of the women’s equal rights movement from now and forever. 29. Moondust- Jaymes Young I met this guy this year (on social media ofc) and as we became friends, he introduced me to a few songs and this was one of them. I love the lyrics talking about letting go and the instrumentation is so captivating and alien-like. Reveal hidden contents 30. Teen Idle- Marina A bop! 2016 me wouldn't be caught listening to a song but I’m glad my taste has evolved and grown over the years because Marina is such a fantastic artist. I have yet to listen to The Family Jewels and FROOT fully yet so maybe my 2021 list will have more of her songs. Reveal hidden contents 31. Love Me Still- Chaka Khan A moving, simple ballad by one of the most captivating voices of R&B. I remember being stalled completely when I heard this and I hope if you listen to it you will understand the sweet and soft feeling I’m talking about. Here's the next ones which should be even more polarizing then the rest cause these songs are... slow. Sixth Batch 32. Girl- Destiny's Child Suchhhhh a girlfriend song and I love it. Sometimes you need to rely on your friends and open up more to people who are willing to help and that care for you and I feel that this song really defined that. Reveal hidden contents 33. Peace Train- Cat Stevens/Yusuf Tbh, I don't think anyone on here listens to Cat Stevens and besides this classic and a few others I don't either, but this anti-war folk bop is really something. It's very much of its time and while I’m not a fan of most of this sound, I'll give a pass to this. It's very much like John lennon's "imagine" from earlier. Reveal hidden contents 34. I Dont Do Duets- Patti Labelle & Gladys Knight Two soul legends coming together on a song was appealing to me when i saw it, but then I heard it and I was NOT disappointed. Gladys served that smoky, emotive backbone about a falling for a man who wasn't willing to commit while Patti was serving those distinct piercing high belts that really enhanced the experience- as well as the horns and twinkling piano. Reveal hidden contents 35. All My Life- K-Ci & JoJo Late 90s R&B at its finest really. I know so many people who grew up on this sound and to hear them talk about it and then listen to it yourself, you can almost like mentally transport to that era in music and pop culture, that's how much of its time it is and how good it is too. Reveal hidden contents 36. I Guess That's Why They Call Them the Blues- Elton John I'm going to have two of his songs back to back on this batch and I’m not ashamed. For someone who is as shady and petty as Sir Elton (his beef with Madonna was messy af and him coming for Janet when she was last on tour still don't sit right with me, ion care if it was five years ago), his music is surprisingly amazing. Or maybe not so surprising- you dont get away with being like that and not make some great songs. The expert background harmonies, the piano backbone really make it one for the ages for me and I revisit it the most among all of Elton’s hits. Reveal hidden contents 37. Sacrifice- Elton John What can I say? Truly unexpected that I’d stand this but slow-tempo songs that reach for the feelings get me everytime. The lyrics are really great and are not at all what i thought they’d be- a divorce basically. Reveal hidden contents 38. Piano Man- Billy Joel I surprisingly have a lot of old white man music on this list for someone who is constant on the edge against the overrating public who stans them. But in some cases, they aren't wrong, the GP. Billy Joel is truly one of the greatest talents of the last century and listening to his signature song, its clear to see why so many people think his classics are timeless and why he continues to sell out concerts despite not releasing new material for nearly 30 years now. Reveal hidden contents 39. Let Me Be Your Angel- Stacey Lattisaw I first heard this on a Luther Vandross radio and didn't think much of it cause it sounds pretty insignificant at first. Then it spent the entire summer living rent free in my mind and I had to stan! Reveal hidden contents Mess not me feeling nostalgic in this rainy post-christmas day So many classics. GreatestLoveofAll Posted December 27, 2020 Author Posted December 27, 2020 As ever, Im terrible at keeping a decent update schedule cause i'm incredibly lazy so forgive me. I;ve been debating on whether I should just finish it now, but now I think I'll just make sure i finish this songs and start the albums tmr, deal? And if I dont do that... well Once again thanks for the comments and here is 7-4! Top Songs of 2020 7. Ego- Gia Woods (once again, sorry for this big a** picture) I remember back in June for Billboard's celebration of Pride Month and they were basically doing promo for some upcoming LGBTQ+ acts and Miss Woods was on the list with this pure pop perfection. It has just enough edge that it isnt too preppy (not that I would mind) and that it matches the unhealthy ups and downs of two egotistical partners that she croons about. 6. "The Bones"- Maren Morris One of a few 2019 songs on this list but it smashed this year so its the only non-Q4 exception to this listing. A combination of relaxing, down to earth country influences with a strong and beautiful pop melody especially in the chorus, this song really hit for me especially thinking about my friends who were graduating college/high school and how they all showed so much strength and preserved till they made in even if their plans and worlds were tossed upside down. I never liked country much but when they aren't as rootsy sounding and have such a strong meaning that is so universal, yet so rare in today's relationship songs its not a surprise really that it's been one of my most played songs of 2020. 5. WAP- Cardi B ft. Megan Thee Stallion As many users and the media (well, the ones who aren't stuck in 1980 at least) have said: this was a global, cultural reset on all levels. It had been a year since we saw "Old Town Road", by an eventually open gay black man take the world by storm with a fusion of country and hip-hop that was comical at least and genius at best. In 2020, with all that has been going on, I didn't think we'd have another moment like that this year. Yet more than enough people turned to music for comfort and to feel alive in this year and "WAP" sure set that fire. Exceeding normal dirty lyrical content, a video racy enough to send any head turning and delivered in such a slick, yet hardcore and effortless fashion by two rappers who happen to be fearless women of color was all the recipe for the definite song of the year. Looking back if we can on this year in music and how the decade started, we will all look back fondly and still catch ourselves murmuring the verse without ever feeling as if its dated or corny. And if you do.... you'll still love it. Finally, shout out to Megan Thee Stallion who if we are being honest was the real winner of 2020's music field for delivering the best feature verse of the year. Nothing slaps harder than when she comes in "Your honor i'm a freak bitch handcuffs, leashes" 4. Stand Up- Cynthia Erivo (from "Harriet") Yes, I went from popping my **** to a hands in the air negro spiritual this was the last Q4 song of 2019 that really got my attention and rightly so. The chanting, gospel, spiritual vocals and harmonies and imagery though the lyrics, the way Erivo's voice weaves up and down from beginning to end is simply breathtaking. Her voice is as marvelous, if not even more than her pristine acting abilities. She didn't win Best Original Song for this and tbh that was the biggest crime of the 2020 award season.
