Once again, here I go abandoning my own threads :) I'm grateful for all the comments fr thank you! Here's the next ones which should be even more polarizing then the rest cause these songs are... slow.

Sixth Batch

32. Girl- Destiny's Child

Destiny's Child – Girl.jpg

Suchhhhh a girlfriend song and I love it. Sometimes you need to rely on your friends and open up more to people who are willing to help and that care for you and I feel that this song really defined that.

Spoiler

33. Peace Train- Cat Stevens/Yusuf

PeaceTrain.jpg

Tbh, I don't think anyone on here listens to Cat Stevens and besides this classic and a few others I don't either, but this anti-war folk bop is really something. It's very much of its time and while I’m not a fan of most of this sound, I'll give a pass to this. It's very much like John lennon's "imagine" from earlier.

Spoiler

34. I Dont Do Duets- Patti Labelle & Gladys Knight

Burnin'1991.jpg

Two soul legends coming together on a song was appealing to me when i saw it, but then I heard it and I was NOT disappointed. Gladys served that smoky, emotive backbone about a falling for a man who wasn't willing to commit while Patti was serving those distinct piercing high belts that really enhanced the experience- as well as the horns and twinkling piano.

Spoiler

35All My Life- K-Ci & JoJo

All My Life by K-Ci and Jojo US CD single 1998.jpg

Late 90s R&B at its finest really. I know so many people who grew up on this sound and to hear them talk about it and then listen to it yourself, you can almost like mentally transport to that era in music and pop culture, that's how much of its time it is and how good it is too.

Spoiler

36. I Guess That's Why They Call Them the Blues- Elton John

I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues Single.jpg

I'm going to have two of his songs back to back on this batch and I’m not ashamed. For someone who is as shady and petty as Sir Elton (his beef with Madonna was messy af and him coming for Janet when she was last on tour still don't sit right with me, ion care if it was five years ago), his music is surprisingly amazing. Or maybe not so surprising- you dont get away with being like that and not make some great songs. The expert background harmonies, the piano backbone really make it one for the ages for me and I revisit it the most among all of Elton’s hits.

Spoiler

37. Sacrifice- Elton John

EltonJohnSacrifice7InchSingleCover.jpg

What can I say? Truly unexpected that I’d stand this but slow-tempo songs that reach for the feelings get me everytime. The lyrics are really great and are not at all what i thought they’d be- a divorce basically.

Spoiler

38. Piano Man- Billy Joel

Billy Joel Piano Man single.jpg

I surprisingly have a lot of old white man music on this list for someone who is constant on the edge against the overrating public who stans them. But in some cases, they aren't wrong, the GP. Billy Joel is truly one of the greatest talents of the last century and listening to his signature song, its clear to see why so many people think his classics are timeless and why he continues to sell out concerts despite not releasing new material for nearly 30 years now.

Spoiler

39. Let Me Be Your Angel- Stacey Lattisaw

Stacy Lattisaw Let Me Be Your Angel.jpg

I first heard this on a Luther Vandross radio and didn't think much of it cause it sounds pretty insignificant at first. Then it spent the entire summer living rent free in my mind and I had to stan!

So many classics!

Peace Train always gets me. Such a timeless song, although I admit I tend to listen to Dolly Parton's version more often than Cat Stevens'.

Piano Man is wonderful. I'd also recommend his songs James, She's Always a Woman (two of my favourite songs of his), We Didn't Start the FireLullaby (Goodnight, My Angel), New York State of Mind.

I Don't Do Duets used to be my favourite song by Patti (that was when I just got into her).

Sacrifice is so beautiful. I Guess That's... too.

I loved most of the other entires that appeared on your list earlier, but my absolute favourite is Love Me Still -- now THAT is timeless. I was shocked to see it on somebody's list here! I've been listening to it a lot earlier this year. Your little write up perfectly summed up my feelings for this song.

Hi! I know I promised 50 songs... that was until my document glitched and most of my progress disappeared :chick3: I had to rearrange and was hoping for a grand finale, but this will have to do. Once again, thank you for the support on this and maybe, just maybe, I can make this a tradition on ATRL. Without further ado, here are the final two songs on my discoveries of 2020.

40. Home- "Pose" Cast

220px-Pose_%28FX_series_-_promo_poster%29.png

I love these old Broadway musical songs and covers of them better be worthy of it or I wont feel any shame panning them even if my opinion holds no real weight. This is the first time I heard them sing on this show and it makes me wanna go back and finish it- I know it’s good. The earnesty in their voices and the contrast during the verses, only to cumulate at the end in unison… simply amazing. Plus fun fact for those who don't know, but I became familiar with this song because it was my fave’s first live publicized performance on national TV.

Spoiler

41. I Know Where I've Been- Hairspray! Cast/Jennifer Hudson

Hairspray Live Poster.jpg

This is the final song on this messy countdown and once again, another cover of a musical classic. I had never heard any interpretation of this song before this, so when I first heard the lyrics it really hit me in a way that will always be special. How such a serious song could be in a fun, upbeat piece like this and still feel so natural and effortlessly part of the story is simply outstanding. I love songs of empowerment and preserving through the tribulations and with the mighty voice of Miss Hudson taking the lead, its hard not to feel like you’ve reached the end when you’re done listening to this.

Spoiler

And that's it! Thank you guys so much for this and participating- it's been an honor. I also have a list of the top 10 songs and albums of the year that i'll post later so stay tuned for that.

Ok but i'm loving this review- I feel honored that you liked some of my choices!

I didnt know Dolly had a version so I will pay that a listen but I'm glad you agree that it's timeless. The messages seems to never be out of touch and I love that. I've listened to some of his other great hits too like New York State of Mind and We Didnt Start the Fire so it wont hurt to listen to it more tbh. What is your favorite album of his?

And stan Miss Patti! It's by far my fave song of her's- it's like one of my staple songs now :jonny:and yesss to Elton- see when you do talentry...

And another Love Me Still fan wow :weeps: i began listening to it before the pandemic really hit and I thought it was so pretty, but during quarantine I had time to mull over it and the last verse/chorus really gets you in the feels, doesnt it? :sosad:

Hmm, when it comes to Billy Joel albums I think it would have to be Turnstiles (1976) and The Stranger (1977), but just because they feature two of my favourite songs of his James and She's Always a Woman.

Mss Patti LaBelle is a legend for a reason. Although I find a lot of her material somewhat bland, the highs are just out of this world. I'm talking If Only You KnewOver the Rainbow, FOREVER YOUNG (my absolute favourite!), This Christmas, I Don't Do Duets, We're Not Making Love Anymore, You Are My Solid Ground...

She is such a powerhouse vocalist, a performer and a humorist, if you ask me. :smitten: Watching her live performances is something else... :flame:

When it comes to Chaka Khan, not sure if you already know it, but I'd definitely recommend one of my favourites Free Yourself -- a 90's house banger featured in To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar film. It's a MUST! (Half of the soundtrack is actually quite good, and the film is a mid-90s classic. :alexz2:)

Also other two, more mellow, 70s classics: A Woman in a Man's World and Roll Me Through the Rushes:smitten:

Also, your avi made me think of (and revisit) Whitney's Million Dollar Bill:jonny5:

+

Listen to CeCe Winans' He's Not On His Knees Yet. It's an absolutely stunning, STUNNING song. I always hoped Whitney would cover this (although CeCe sounds like her on moments.). :weeps:
