GreatestLoveofAll's 2020 Top Albums Finale: Top 5 Revealed!!

Posted (edited)

Hihi! I decided to do one of these because i've been here for a few years now and I've always though me making a list like this would be real redundant. But now I came up with the idea of sharing with you guys some of the songs I discovered during this mess of a year, 50 to be exact.. I know for a fact some of yall will drag me or even worse not even comment but oh well here's to us surviving! :gaycat6:

These wont be in a specific order, im just listing them to keep track cause I do be forgetful. I'll try to add links to the songs later!

First Batch

1. Bubblegum B*tch- Marina

A close-up of a light-skinned blonde-haired woman with a small heart symbol located next to her left eye. The name "Marina and the Diamonds" is located above her picture, while the title "Electra Heart" is placed beneath her chin.

My friend introduced me into Electra Heart earlier this year before the pandemic took hold and I was impressed by the multi-faced set of songs but Bubblegum B*tch was the one that really took me back. The only type of Marina I had listened to was her 2019 Love + Fear and the aggressive pop-rock sound was a fresh sound for me this year.

Spoiler

2. My Boyfriend's Back- The Angels

L-R Phyllis Allbut, Barbara Allbut and Peggy Santiglia in 1963.[1]

Extremely aggravating if you focus on the lyrics, extremely fun and care-free if you enjoy light-hearted 1960s pop.

Spoiler

3. Jump (Original Mix)- The Pointer Sisters

PointersJump.jpg

The Pointer Sisters- I’ve heard a lot of 80s pop, but few actually get me jamming like this. This entire summer I've been stuck home like so many of us and this was the song that got me through. Weird enough, it was recommended on my old school R&B playlist… when it’s synth-pop.

Spoiler

4. From A Distance- Bette Midler

Midler From a D.jpg

I should probably warn some of you now: there are a fair share of ballads and slow songs on this list, but i’m a sucker for them so it is what it is. I was fairly surprised when I realized I didn't know this song because the sentimental, ring-like production that definitely screams late 80s/early 90s ballad, make-the-world-better lyrics and gorgeous background harmonies makes a perfect contender for karaoke of the year for me.

Spoiler

5. Cut to The Feeling- Carly Rae Jepsen

Cut to the Feeling.jpg

I know. I’m ashamed that it took me this long to discover this piece of pop perfection but I’ll admit that my own bias is what kept me from even bothering with listening to it. This song, like several on this list, exudes joy- in my opinion the modern day equivalent to “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” in so many ways. Definitely should have been a hit.

yes, break out is full of amazing songs.  it has classic singles such as neutron dance, automatic (!!!), and i'm so excited, and pretty much all but one of the songs on it are bops and not boring ballads.

This is a cool Best Of concept!

As a Marina stan, I will give great applause to Bubblegum Bitch, I was well known in college for blasting that song a lot at parties...

But also her best album is FROOT and the fact that the only Marina (and the Diamonds) album you've ever listened to is her ABSOLUTE WORST makes me sad. Please fix that even if it's by listening to her second worst album Electra Heart

Jump & Cut to the Feeling, such good tracks - glad you discovered them. :clap3:

Marina always serves, she can't do any wrong. :alexz:

Ooooh we LOVE to see some Electra Heart stanning! An iconic, perfect pop album tbh. That "concept" needs to come back asap. (although "Man's Road" has been an iconic return to Froot-form at least)

Why did Bubblegum Bitch get so popular all of sudden? I noticed that on Spotify the other day. It was one of my top tracks of 2012. I love it!

Cut to the Feeling (a BOP btw) is the only one I'm familiar with so let me get to listening! :matty:

Ok time for another update! I'm SUPER grateful for the positive reaction you guys it means a lot. Now time for some more boring ballads  classic songs.

Second Batch

6. I Knew I Loved You- Savage Garden

Iknewilovedyou1-single.jpg

Ok but I was never a fan of R&B music from the late 90s and early 2000s for several reasons. Yet hearing this track was enough to really change course for me. The chill production, the earnest way he sounds. There was an appreciation thread for this artist a few days ago and I said then and i’ll say it now: its miles better than Truly Madly Deeply.

Spoiler

7. When You're Gone- Avril Lavinge

Avril lavigne when you're gone single.jpg

I used to hear snippets of this song all the time on those old dramatic YouTube videos made by random fanbases when I was a kid, but never cared for it as they used to be annoying. Listening to this song on its own though it's clear why they would always use it. It's heartbreaking the emotions Avril is making you feel and more than once i’ve found myself mellowed by it. 10/10, the Canadian Christian artist did. :smitten:

Spoiler

8. National Anthem- Lana Del Rey

NationalAnthem Artwork.png

I listened to Lana’s whole discography via Spotify and YT this year so I discovered hundreds of her songs. But I especially loved the ones on her breakthrough album, Born to Die and this one is one of the top tier gems. She writes so poetically and dystopian like yet it’s hard to not get drawn to how different she sounds especially compared to what I usually listen to.

Spoiler

9.  (You Drive Me) Crazy- The Stop Remix- Britney Spears

Image of a blond woman dressed in a black ensemble in front of a gray background. "Britney Spears Greatest Hits: My Prerogative" is written in white capital letters inside a white box.

I was also on a Britney bunge this year. Sure, i'm no stan and have a kii on her once in a while, but after watching a fan made documentary and getting into some of her well liked songs, I’ve had a revelation on the greatness of this woman’s catalogue. I heard this version before the original and it's far better anyways so that’s why I chose it. The thumping bass, the stank of the ad libs and the over danceable fire to it makes it one of the best 2020 tracks for me even though it came out some 15 years ago.

Spoiler

10. Too Little Too Late- 2018- Jojo

JoJo - Too Little Too Late.png

Ok but i’ve never heard the original but I already know that this is better because Jojo already has a pretty thin, light voice and im not sure i’d be a fan of that kind of voice on a 14 year old girl. Nonetheless, she went off on this and once again shows that she’s one of the very best and most underrated voices out there today. The conviction in which she sings it is commanding and the groove is pretty neat as well.

Too Little Too Late is a serve, and takes me back - I absolutely adore it, I wish the original version was still accessible. :'(

When You're Gone was was really made me take interest in Avril, that & 'Hot' are fantastic and totally underrated and did not get the success they deserved. :grump:

National Anthem & Crazy are classics too. :clap3:

Oh wow really? I thought they were fan favorites tbh. It kinda reminds me of Kelly Clarkson's "Because of You" sonically

Savage Garden. :clap3: I personally prefer Crash & Burn over I Knew I Loved You, but they are both great tracks.
