Katy Perry - Smile

I'm so sick of seeing Smile slander when it's perfectly good, strong, well-crafted pop production with a number of really interesting melodies, some great lyrics, awesome imagery and that is in general a lot of fun. Is it THEE single most avant-garde moment of pop ever? No. Does that matter when the world has gone to hell in a hand basket and we could do with a bit of positivity, fun and happiness? Also no. Katy did what she did with the album. God knows what the plan was with the drip feed of "Never Really Over," "Small Talk," "Harleys in Hawaii," and that dreadful "Never Worn White" but alas it all came together eventually. I love the title track, I love songs like "Tucked", "Cry About It Later" (a god damn hymm) and the album closer "What Makes a Woman." It's actually an album full of gems when I think about - queen ****. Y'all stay doing the most.

Can you put this in a banner, King :WAP:

Smile? Hmmmm verrrryyyy interesting again. I didn't think you'd like it that much tbh, but then again im just now discovering what people like through these list. "What Makes A Woman" and "Daises" truly are the standout tracks for me- i refused to acknowledge Never Really Over as part of the album tho.

I'll admit Smile isn't THEE album I would have liked but I still found it a lot of fun. Like it's cute. But you're right "NRO" doesn't really fit with like "Smile." Like the former is a BANGER and the latter is a cute bop.

I did not expect Chromatica getting panned and Stupid Love getting praised nnn :deadbanana2:

100% agree about High Road & Rare. Such disappointments

Nnn messy of me - but sometimes the single is hot and the album is not.

Golden Hour is a great album, glad you finally checked her out :clap3:

Plenty of ATRLers will appreciate Charli and Rina but I don't really listen to them  they've both had decent songs in the past though

When it won AOTY I was like gawd I'd best check out this heaux which I was avoiding because I knew she was country (which I'm not here for) but then it was really cute. Obvi listen to that Charli album fool! It's so good. SAWAYAMA pales in comparison but it's still got some cute moments.

omg you live in New Zealand, congrats on being able to leave the house sis :duca: You snapped on the HIFN write-up. The best quarantine THING released this year/ever because I'm not looking forward to ****ty music that will end up coming out next year about lockdown.

Sawayama and Golden Hour, also amazing albums.

I was out having drinks last night and it was a beautiful summer evening and everything was BUSY because for most it's the end of the work year and I was thinking "wow how lucky we are."

I'm so glad Glory finally had original cover and new bonus tracks :jonny5:

HIFN is so of-the-moment. Queen did something unique and cool. Surprised more albums haven't done it. I guess Taylor kind of did something weird with folklore and Evermore but... not my cup of tea.

2. party 4 u
- Charli XCX

MXlFpAE.png

I am somewhat of a recent convert to the Church of XCX. Only in the last two years have I truly started to get hooked into her world. I have yet to appreciate her pre-Number 1 Angel work but I liked Pop 2, got obsessed with Charli and I think how I’m feeling now is the best body of work put out in CENTURIES. It’s truly that god damn good. There are a zillion amazing tracks and if this was an honest top 25 list the whole damn album would be in here but I don’t think non-stans would be interested. “party 4 u” is the perfect depressed gay pop song - sad lyrics over groovy synths and electrical effects. Charli did that. I think when it came out (back when I was in lockdown and depressed and bemoaning a falling apart relationship that had barely got off the ground) I was really feeling some type of way and the idea of making grand gestures with no returns was a little too real.

Whew, the How I'm Feeling Now STANNING we love to see it. Idk if it or Pop 2 are her best albums imo but I think I'll give the edge to Pop 2 after giving it a spin earlier today. Party 4 U is a great track, though not quite in my top 5 of the album.

Party 4 U  :jonny5: It's lowkey becoming my all-time favorite from her through this year :jonny2:

I've heard that one because of people's YECD. I'd like to check a Charli XCX LP soon. Which one would you recommend?

I don't use Charli, but I'm definitely perched for the #1 :eli:

Alright ladies and gays... the time has come... for the number 1 song of the year! Thanks for your comments and support - best ofs are always a lot of fun. I took 2019 off cause they can be a lot of work but alas - 2020 is another successful best of.

What do you reckon is her best album? I love Pop 2 but it's a bit zany and all over the show. Charli is pretty cohesive in some respects lol.

It's a timeless bop. A lot of her songs are pretty jarring and noisy but "party 4 u" is pretty much just a normal smash pop song.

Oh are other people stanning? We love to see it. I guess Charli's 2019 album Charli is probably the most polished thing she's ever put out. how I'm feeling now is more experimental - Charli is more of a pop production. Start there and then probably Pop 2 and then how I'm feeling now

1. Malibu
- Kim Petras

1LFPdAn.png

Every year my #1 song gets bestowed with the ICONIC lollipop background which is the same as in Madonna's iconic Hard Grammy album cover. This year there is simply one infectious, uplifting, happy, sexy, sultry and addictive bop that rained throughout my tumultuous year from a crushed heart, the uncertainty and scariness of COVID-19 and subsequent lockdowns, a new romance blossoming during a long-ass winter and now a gorgeous summer in COVID-free New Zealand with a sexy beau and holidays planned - and Christmas on the horizon! Life is good right now and I would like to thank Kim for this absolute smash perking me up through the lows and carrying me into the excellent mood I have found myself in. Now I know this is another Dr R**e song and I hate myself for it and my Kim stanning but I can't help it :emofish:. He's evil and knows how to get this gay bopping his buss to insanely good melodies and synth waves that sound like a bright sparkling blue ocean gently lapping a golden beach. Tell me how do I get over his bops when his songs taste like Malibu??? That's the question.

"Tell me what am I supposed to do,

When your eyes are so pacific blue,

Falling deep into Curaçao blue,

And all your kisses taste like Malibu"

Also the cover art is super iconic:

I think Pop 2 remains my favorite Charli album! I only don't really care much for Delicious and honestly it's only really because of the Boom Clap phone call because it always throws me off and bothers me nnn. I do see How I'm Feeling Now overtaking it though, especially once we're in a more stable non-quarantine place where I live and the memories come to me.

Anyway Malibu, interesting top pick. I think it's cute but I only listened to it a few times when it came out and that's about it. Sweet Spot is still my favorite from her.

Posted

malibu is a bop, i can remember being in lockdown 1.0 and walking bopping to it:gaycat6: (now i'm in lockdown 3.0 and i listen to evermore all day and sad:smile:)

Posted

oh wow party 4 u is a STANDOUT for me tbh. it kinda makes me wanna give a lap dance to someone emotionally

i refuse to listen to kim petras so idk the #1

Charli and Katy love is well deserved. :clap3:

party 4 u is cute but definitely not one of my favorites from hifn :matty: I love Kim! ...but Malibu was just alright :keir: She has stronger bops out there for suuure. || I like all the albums you listed  SAWAYAMA & Golden Hour are my 2 favorites from there. Smile is overhated indeed, wish a few tracks were better though. Sooo glad Small Talk + Never Worn White missed the cut. Also yeah, get into the new Troye "Easy" remix, both versions are great.

Cringey video but nice beat. :smile2:

Kim Petras at #1... chile anways dd (but i also noticed that she kinda flop in ATRL best list this year, cause ive seen so many of her songs and her album enter most of lists last year. Maybe she didn't released album this year ddd)

We love How I'm Feeling Now, SAWAYAMA & Golden Hour acclaim in this house :clap3: Katy's Smile is cute and the first 3 songs of the album is the best thing ever happen in mainstream pop this year but some of the weakest songs really turn me off so much that i can experience the album as a whole ddd

Glory is Britney's best album in years and it I knew how much Britney herself enjoying making this album. We love pop-campy-yet exciting album from her :clap3:
