3. Shygirl - "BB"

This year, I really got into Shy. A last.fm comment (about this song) says: "sounds like being on ketamine and adderal at the same time." Idk Ketamine myself, but I can vouch for the adderall part. And kids: mixing drugs is risky to do your body, but great when you can access the feeling through music alone. I hear this song taking a lot of influences from different scenes like Nightcore; Grime; Bbass / hyperpop; UK bass / and the filthiest strains of hip hop/club music - then putting a slightly new spin on it all. I've played this song lots and lots and lots and lots. For me, Shygirl is quite a character, a charismatic performer, and a great match for Sega Bodega's experiments. Keep watching this space.

2. The Weeknd - "Blinding Lights"

"Blinding Lights" feels timeless already. Somehow it feels natural the way it held over 2020 like a shadow, but part of me still can't believe this is the same House of Balloons guy. I'd say a word-of-mouth experience happened, where slowly as time dragged on over the spring and summer, my friends and family members became looped in on this hit at different stages of time. At the core of all the success here I think is a tight pop songwriting job, that really sells a story about finding light in the darkness, and vice versa. Again with Dua - it felt like it had been a minute since quality like this won out at the highest level of the industry. I'll leave this line to highlight the iconic, thrilling video. Abel's Vegas'd, screaming-out-into-the-abyss type vibe that accompanied the After Hours promo has definitely resonated with me a bit. ( :eli:) This song felt appropriate to where I was at a year ago, and feels the same now. Cool stuff.

1. (Sandy) Alex G - "Gretel"

He's dropped the (Sandy) from his name again, but as for my love for Alex's output as such -- so far so good. I thought the emotional potency of Rocket was already high, but with this song - House of Sugar's lead single and kind-of title track - I feel like he blew up his formula into outer space, finding an awesome balance between studio trickery and classic folk formulas. I catch a similar feeling from tracks like "Hope" and "Southern Sky". Maybe it's the (again, almost nightcore'd) pitched vocal samples on this one that give it that extra something for me. I think the "Good people gotta fight to exist" is really honest and tragic, and skews the whole track (and the House of Sugar as a stand-in for temptation) into a more contemplative light. Anyway, yeah. I stan Alex G a bit and this song exemplifies why

I am going to cap off this 2019 in review section with an EP list. Then finally on to the main course.

In the meantime ima respond to some comments and to your guys’ threads. :giraffe:

I remember being PISSED when Heartless pushed ahead and got to number 1 before Blinding Lights. I thought he was gonna end up going to that sound instead of the more interesting progression of going into a Blinding Lights sound, but then he surprised even me and merged the both (less Heartless, thank God) for After Hours. AND then Blinding Lights smashed so, if I were to go back to myself late 2019 and say something, it would be "don't worry, Blinding Lights will get the last laugh."

Oh and I'd probably tell myself back then something about COVID.

Not was an outstanding track.

*jumps to present year*

This song makes me think about memories, and how the things that happen to us stay with us inside even when it doesn't feel that way. Really nice songwriting from the team here + sonically it covers a lot of ground from diff stages of Charli's career as well. It's not the song that appears on my list, but I think it's one I will remember this year's events by.

This was the year's real secret banger that no one talks about, though.

I should have turned down the volume before listening to Forever. Ouch! It's got a nice chorus. I like the video concept too.
