BUMP

mokitsu Posted December 2, 2020 Author Posted December 2, 2020 some albums that i thought would LOVE but ended up hating....... this is DISAPPOINTMENTS so albums that i never thought would be good in the first place (Chromatica) couldn't make the list! ironically "the ascension" marks the downfall of sufjan stevens - truly one of the most pretentious and dull records i've heard this year. the album is an 80 minutes journey (one of those where you're bored and uncomfortable in the back seat and just want it to end), that tries to balance ambience and experimentation but ultimately comes across as apathetic, cold and skeletal. not to say that can't work - nicolas jaar's cenizas, which i will mention in this list again, does it wonderfully - but sufjan's songwriting and overall delivery is just boring, and adding electronic glitches to it every now and then doesn't cover it up. highlights: video game to think i was SO excited for this album... i never liked the hyperpop bright grimes that art angels presented much, so i was incredibly glad she was going back to a darker, more atmospheric sound with miss anthropocene. the singles were great and i had them on rotation for the best part of last year. sadly, the album is all style and no substance - there's not much beneath the moody dark pop surface. besides awful vocal performances from grimes, the biggest crime is how badly mixed it is and how cheap the production sounds. among all the weird pseudo-intellectual bull**** that made this album, "delete forever" stands as a genuinely great, unique and emotional song. hoping for a better album next time. highlights: my name is dark, so heavy i fell through the earth i root for megan HARD. she has a great personality and presence and most of her singles are great and fun. tina snow and fever, especially the latter, were a perfect representation of her talents and her sound - sexual, nasty, taking no **** and being cocky AF. but her output this year, with suga and her debut album "good news" left me underwhelmed and bored. besides a few gems - shots fired, don't stop, savage - she doesn't seem to evolve artistically or give us a more multidimensional perspective of who she is. there's some experimentation with her sound, yes (the last three songs on suga come to mind), but they're mostly unsuccessful. to me, she's in a box and doesn't seem to get out of it - which is fine, it's working and people love it, just not me. highlights: don't stop, savage (remix) kevin girl.... this year, tame impala was a massive letdown. we all knew the stakes were high after currents and lonerism, especially after taking a five year break from releasing music. patience, his comeback single in 2019 was a great fusion of his psychedelic pop sound with disco... but it never made the album. instead, we got a bland and formulaic album, currents on xanax. i can see him coming back from this undercooked project, but it definitely left a bad taste in my mouth. highlights: posthumous forgiveness the top 4 disappointments are coming soon
BlackoutZone Posted December 2, 2020 Posted December 2, 2020 I feel like both Kevin and Claire made the same fault - released the best material pre-album and when the record arrived we expected more, but were ultimately left with more fillery tracks. I love MA as a whole though, it barely feels like a 2020 record because of the last years leak, but maybe that's why my reception is a bit better, cause I've listened to it altogether without anything sans WAP being out. But the criticism is very valid since the album was announced on her instagram as some grand statement on global warming and outside of some cute visuals we got nothing of this narrative on the album, it's mostly Grimes moaning over template ambient music (and I love it ) Expecting Fiona in part 2 kii
bestfiction Posted December 2, 2020 Posted December 2, 2020 I liked both Slow Rush and MA but I perfectly understand how they might've left people wanting for more. However, idk about the argument that MA is "cheaply" produced cause to me her amateurism is a part of her appeal - after all she's doing everything on her own.
