Blue Rose Posted December 5, 2020 Author Posted December 5, 2020 It’s really impossible to define what this album is. I think that’s why the cover is just a blank page for the listener to fill with his thoughts and feelings. And what a rollercoaster this album is! It will keep you guessing and leave you winded by the time you’re finished. Too bad Donald ignored this project. It truly deserved better. The iconic producer continues to excel at blending his Electronic and Ambient sensibilities with amazing Pop hooks and storytelling. Nowadays most HipHop albums fail at delivering a theme and sticking to it. Enter, Ka’s Descendants Of Cain which ticks all the boxes. One of my favorite HipHop projects in a minute. With guests such as FKA twigs, Sampha and Jamie xx, it seems unbelievable that Headie One remained the star of his project, produced by DJ Fred Again. Also you know you’re doing something right when Drake decides to copy your entire style. This demonstrates that we should never judge an album by its singles. The Ascension is a magnificent work of art. Im obsessed with every track (even the pre album singles have grown on me now lol) Oh and the true tea is that this is better than Carrie & Lowell, but I know people are not ready for that conversation. It’s no secret that I worship The National. But that doesn’t mean I will blindly love everything they offer. It’s actually the opposite, I set super high expectations for my faves. Thankfully, Matt was able to surpass them, which is crazy to me. Produced by the legendary Booker T Jones, the album is a snapshot of great American songwriting, pulling from Rock, Folk, Blues etc... Matt’s lyrics are familiar and his baritone voice is as devastating as ever. Moses’ ambitious double album was one of my go-to during lockdown. Fitting since this album has a major isolation plot point. Despite the centerpiece of the album being the stadium ready Virile, græ remains adventurous and intimate. It also helps that every time I listen to the album I have a new favorite song. Oh and on a sadder note, I had tickets to see him in concert but ****ing Covid ruined my plans. Winning the Disco revival war of 2020 is Jessie Ware whose What’s Your Pleasure is nothing but a tour de force of Pop excellence. Marrying sensual lyrics with a cinematic production, What’s Your Pleasure never stopped mesmerizing me. Also that Bananarama sample on Mirage *chef’s kiss* Perfume Genius musical intuitions are so good and every lyric invites a second take. With this album, he has managed to top himself yet again. The result is both an emotional and physical journey of love and sex. And the production keeps you guessing at every turn as perfectly showcased by the track Some Dream. Monumental project dealing with pain, loss and love without losing the humor that has made Thundercat so endearing. The album pulls from R&B, Jazz, Funk, HipHop and countless other elements, everything under Flying Lotus’ gaze who serves as co-executive producer. This is also my most played album of 2020, duh! Im obsessed!!
BlackoutZone Posted December 5, 2020 Posted December 5, 2020 (edited) Jessie winning the disco battle is very fair to me, I'm so glad she had fairly big year with this record, cause it's what she deserves ever since Devotion came out. Love grae, I'm glad it's a project of 2 sides, cause it gets a little lengthy for me so I like to take 1 side at once. II listened to 3.15.20 when it was on Donald Glover Presents and as you've said it's a project had to define. I think it was the first time I listened to an album without seeing a cover, features, titles or even number of tracks and even though at the end of the day we try to rate the music on the record, all the aspects surrounding the album influence our (or mine at least) final opinion and how we feel about it. So the album itself felt a bit too empty for me and I'm not sure if it's, because of the music or the fact there aren't any visuals/background supporting it? I planned to revisit, but I forgot, kinda missed the fact it even dropped officially nn DJesse vol 3 ROBBED?? INTERESTING Edited December 5, 2020 by BlackoutZone
Sunderland 4ever Posted December 5, 2020 Posted December 5, 2020 I like many albums from your Top 10. What's Your Pleasure? will surely be high on my list too. I also like Suddenly and It Is What It Is. The Ascension was a shocking change of genre style. I was not much into it, though.
dreamofyou Posted December 5, 2020 Posted December 5, 2020 haven’t heard any of these omg tasteless me gonna listen to the number 1

He really shouldve titled his album and upload the songs names (I remember the official titles leaking) The album never stood a chance with a GP. It sucks because it is by far his best album and you can tell a lot of work and love went into creating it. This desperation of being edgy is what will ruin many artists.
mokitsu Posted December 5, 2020 Posted December 5, 2020 i HATE moses, but what a solid top 3. thundercat's album was good, but it felt very "been there done that" to me. don't hate it by any means though, it's a great listen
ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 5, 2020 ATRL Moderator Posted December 5, 2020 good top 10!!! like to see jessie ware in top 5s, and sufjan's album while not my favorite was super overhated when it was released. grae is good too, and the pg album had some good cuts too.
Mezik Posted December 5, 2020 Posted December 5, 2020 I really need to listen to Jesse's album, so much acclaim and I've heard a few songs but never the album in whole. So many people have it on their lists though, so I need to give it a full listen. Happy to see Gambino made the top ten, his album was fantastic as well.
Remmy Posted December 5, 2020 Posted December 5, 2020 What's Your Pleasure? Glad the gays started hyping her up because otherwise I would've definitely missed out. Definitely a really solid album.
TheWayWeWere Posted December 5, 2020 Posted December 5, 2020 WYP is really the best of disco revival albums of this year such an underrated MASTERPIECE
Tremor Christ Posted December 5, 2020 Posted December 5, 2020 Gambino's album is truly underrated. Everyone either ignored it or clowned it for retweets. It just didn't stand a chance. Even I ,who liked the album very much, don't revisit it often.
ATRL Moderator khalyan Posted December 5, 2020 ATRL Moderator Posted December 5, 2020 Jessie top 3 Caribou's album was nice too!
elvenOCEAN Posted December 5, 2020 Posted December 5, 2020 Sufjan and Jessie Thundercat's album was really good too. Much better than his previous effort. Dragonball Durag is really fantastic!

A 9/10 critics wanted C&L 2.0 from Sufjan. Im so glad he gave us Age Of Adz 2.0 instead. A winning!!
ARTPØP Posted December 6, 2020 Posted December 6, 2020 glad to see Dua on your list very low tho Lots of artists I never heard of that I wanna check out!
Pink Matter Posted December 6, 2020 Posted December 6, 2020 What an interesting top 10! Always good to see another Gambino fan. I feel like ATRL went super hard on the album for no reason when it was released Thundercat @ #1 is a solid choice! So many highs (though I'd say Drunk is better). I listened to PGs album once but didn't like it much He tends to be a grower so I need to give him another chance. Jessie and Moses I listened to the Caribou album once and remembered liking it a lot on my first listen so glad it made your top 10. Going through the rest of your list: Glad to see CxH, Jhene, Dua, and Abel make your list! I actually have the Ojerime album saved so your description makes me excited to listen to it
Lazuli Posted December 6, 2020 Posted December 6, 2020 Quote Oh and the true tea is that this is better than Carrie & Lowell, but I know people are not ready for that conversation. that's because it's simply not true what's your pleasure? perfect album set my heart on fire and grae

One of my favorite first listen of the year (followed by Ascension) Yes please listen to Ojerime’s album. She’s very underrated. Im surprised she doesn’t have a bigger following. But that will change soon 3 hours ago, Lazuli said: that's because it's simply not true what's your pleasure? perfect album set my heart on fire and grae It is. The ballads on Ascension (Run Away With Me, Ursa Major, Landslide) rival C&L. Then it takes the edge with the more adventurous songs. Not to mention, C&L has more fillers. According to my Apple Music Replay, C&L is in my top10 most played albums of the year, so I actually worship that album too.
