The 10th Annual ATRL Critics Circle

Recommended Posts

Ace Reject

Hello to all the old regulars, and welcome to all the newcomers!

As those that know can attest, we started this - our version of year end film critics awards - in 2011. In the year since, we've given top prizes to the likes of Bey, Adele, Fiona, Lorde, and Robyn! This is to celebrate the year in music, ATRL style.

Here are the categories in which we vote - with a few new ones added for equal measure:

Album

Single

Song (Lyrics/Music)

Track (for album tracks/b-sides ... NOT singles)

Male

Female

Group

Collaboration

Breakthrough Artist

Pop

Traditional R&B

Contemporary R&B

Rap/Hip-Hop

Country

Rock

Dance/Electronic

Alternative

Independent

Foreign

Music Video

Producer

Songwriter

EP

Comeback (artists who have been gone for five years or more)

Singles Run (the artist who's released the best overall singles this year)

I'm thinking... December 12th for the whole shindig?

Some examples of how it's gone in the past:

2017

2018

In the meantime, let's get some ideas started!

Pretending you tagged me WHEW I forget how BUSY it is on here towards the end of the year!

I need to think about each category a BIT, but I see Jessie Ware getting snubbed in the ATRL Grammys so let's not do that here, thanks!

Also I can't remember if singles runs count if the singles started the year before? i.e. Roisin Machine: Incapable (2019), Narcissus (2019), Murphy's Law (2020), Something More (2020). I guess you could technically include Jealousy (2015) LOL but I wouldn't since Incapable was clearly the full "start" of the era.

Same for Ms. Ware: Adore You (2019), Mirage (2019), Spotlight (2020), Save a Kiss (2020).

FYC for Track:

because it looks like the bitch doesn't have to plan to turn this into a single even though it is one of the best and most streamed songs from her latest album.

I'm sorry, but I won't have the time to go through enough 2020 releases to provide fair/interesting nominations, so I'll sit this one out. Thanks for tagging me, though!

@supaspaz's list is looking pretty hot based on what I know :yum:

It's not about fair! The critics circle is fun because it's about fighting for your fave. We all get together, a category comes up, you throw out potential nominees, then you vote for your top three. If there's a consensus on the top picks, it wins. Otherwise you go to an instant runoff. It moves quickly and has a totally different dynamic than the ATRL Grammys. Artists can come out of nowhere at the last minute and snatch a category.

First of all, everyone please listen to this brilliant song! And watch the stunning video, which made me cry the first time I saw it.

"Heaven's wasted on the dead"

That's what your mama said

And the hearse was idling in the parking lot

She said you thought the world of me

And you were glad to see

They finally let me be an astronaut

Who else is doing it like him?!

It does sound like great fun, but I honestly don't have time or energy left between work and the Mariah rate... sorry. I'll be watching with much interest, though.

Also I don't listen to hip-hop outside of Mariah's features, so... :busted:

If only the critics circle had existed in 2006 or 2007, I would have been fighting for Ms. Ferguson to snatch category after after!

Hmmm we've now entered the world of droplets, so this makes sense?

So HAIM's three singles would count for this year, since they're on the album? What about Sam Hunt? Body Like a Back Road was one of the biggest singles of 2017 for crying out loud... and it's on his 2020 release!

I'll make a list later but let me plug Chloe x Halle real quick (for Contemporary R&B). The girls need to collect their things cuz they've been stomping all year.

As far as singles run, Dua has to be a main contender! Even discounting Don't Start Now, we got:

Physical-> Break My Heart + Hallucinate-> Levitating

:WAP:
