NEW YORK (AP) — The late Whitney Houston has earned her third diamond-certified album, becoming the first Black artist to achieve the feat.

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and Legacy Recordings announced Wednesday that Houston's 1987 sophomore album, "Whitney," has reached diamond status, which is equivalent to selling 10 million albums. Her self-titled 1985 debut album and 1992's "The Bodyguard" soundtrack were already diamond successes, selling 13 million and 18 million units, respectively.

"Whitney" featured four songs that topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart: the Grammy-winning "I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)," "Didn't We Almost Have It All," "So Emotional" and "Where Do Broken Hearts Go." The single "Love Will Save the Day" peaked at No. 9 on the chart.

Garth Brooks holds the record for most diamond-certified albums, with nine. Others with three or more albums that have reached diamond status include The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Shania Twain and the Eagles.

The RIAA awards diamond plaques to albums and singles that reach 10 times platinum status. That once was the equivalent of selling 10 million songs or albums, but has changed since 2016, when the RIAA began incorporating streaming from YouTube, Spotify and other digital music services.

Wednesday's announcement comes a week before Houston, who died in 2012, will be posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 2020 class. The ceremony will air on HBO on Nov. 7 at 8 p.m. ET.

Mariah needs to certify Self titled (100% Diamond) and TEOM (should be at least 8x or 9x platinum).

Slay Whitney :clap3:

Her debut is probably eligible for diamond but TEOM is updated at 6x Platinum, it sold 6.1M pure in the US so there's no way it's 8x or 9x platinum

He's got some of the finest ass songs to his name: The Dance, If Tomorrow Never Comes, More Than A Memory, Callin Baton Rouge etc. And he's a massive ally to all sorts of causes. He deserves his success.

6.1M Pure... but it has like +1B Streams across all formats. It's definitely at least 8x Platinum.

Mariah's debut is absolutely not eligible for diamond. It has barely sold 200,000 since its last certification, which was in 1999.

And you realize Whitney's did not sell those copies right? Streaming is a thing. Mariah's debut has definitely amassed a 1M cert with streams.

Uh huh, sure.

However, Mariah's debut doesn't get huge streaming numbers either. So all you're doing is speculating. The label will still have to provide receipts that the album has sold or shipped or amassed the sales equivalent of 1 million since its last certification in 1999. They are a long way away. Her best bet for another diamond album is her Christmas album.

And certainly hasn't :toofunny2:

Take a look on Spotify and Youtube, the album has poor streams.

Like...her debut wasn't a high catalogue seller pre-streaming. And that will also be reflected in its streaming numbers. That is not the Mariah album people go and listen to lol.

She's very popular on Pandora. Okay maybe not 1B... but it's definitely still eligible. They don't have to cross the threshold, they have to be at least somewhat close. 9M in 1999, if you really think the album has not moved 1M units in 21 years is :rip:

Go ask in the Mariah base, I asked like a month or two ago and they told me it's at 9.2m :toofunny2:

He hasnt even sold that much, his label plays with multi disc albums in order for them to count for more than one sale, sell it at a cheap price, then LITERALLY pays for the certifications based on shipped units. His certifications are super far from his real sales.

For example:

THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION (released 2007)

Certified: DIAMOND

Sales: 554K

Its a 9 disc set by the way... :toofunny2:

Again, the album was a POOR catalogue seller. Selling 1 million in 20-21 years would mean it was a STRONG catalogue seller.

It was barely moving anything in the 00s. So you thinking it would've sold 1 million in 20 years just because it's Mariah is ridiculous. The only kinds of albums that do such a thing are classic rock albums.
