Do artists have the right to be "chart obsessed"?

Recommended Posts

I've always found the argument that an artist is "chart obsessed" to be a bit confusing, that artists shouldn't care how much they sell or where they are in the charts. In whatever profession you choose, should you not always strive for success? Of course this can go too far and become an actual obsession and become priority over one's art, but isn't a little desire to succeed good overall?

Discuss sistrens. You can also include "awards obsessed" in the discussion if you would like.

Yes. It's literally their career

There's a reason why it is always the stans of flops that have a problem with it

ofc, anyone who strikes a deal with a label has to obsess over the charts at least a little bit, it's their success metric(along with the touring $$$), this is literally their JOB

I mean I understand your label is gonna want you to do certain things but it’s tiring to see people make music with the intention of gaming the charts.  Old town road was in my opinion what should have been the end of it.  Nas perfected the game and that’s it.  It’s done.  It’s over.  Onto  something else.

Yes. It's literally their career [2].

I never got why ATRL drags artists for being chsrt obsessed as if living vicariously through their success and using their numbers and achievements to argue with gays on a popsite is even better :rip:

Yes! It’s definitely ok.
I don’t know bout y’all but where I work it’s highly competitive. We work with different metrics of measuring success and we all try to be on top.

Why can’t artists do the same?

this.

If you're new, it's understandable but if you're 10 years into your career... it's good to celebrate if you're reaching new peaks but stop obsessing over it.

stupid.

It’s their JOB. Any artist that doesn’t care about the charts doesn’t deserve to be backed by a big record deal when there are so many starving artists dying to get the same push and $$ backing.

Yes, but you’re using the word “obsessed”, which is absolutely negative for an artist, since it basically puts them away of what should be their actual focus, their art, in favor of commercial performance which isn’t always an indicator of quality at all.

I mean, does an investment banker have a right to be obsessed with the stock market? Does a lawyer have the right to be obsessed with their winning record? Does a doctor have a right to be obsessed with their successful surgeries? Yeah, they have the right, just like we have the right to judge them for their priorities.

Cute

Yes its their career. Yes they should be passionate about it, but the charts dictate their career/livelihood.

Music has an obvious business side to it and that means profit. In the same way stockbrokers are stock market-obsessed
