Kamala Harris exposed for defending prison slave labor

At that point, Kamala Harris had been the state’s attorney general for just over four months, representing California as its top legal officer. But the Supreme Court ruling would have to be enacted on her watch. Every six months, the state would have to show it had decreased its prison population in compliance with a threshold overseen by a three-judge district court panel: 167 percent of capacity by the end of 2011, 155 percent by June 2012, finally arriving at the target level of 137.5 percent by June 2013.

It soon became clear that the state would hold out on complying with the judicial order. 2011 passed with little progress made on the decarceration mandate, and by 2012, a report surfaced that proved the state actually intended to increase its prison population. In May of that year, Harris’s office “confirmed their intent not to comply with the Order but instead to seek its modification from 137.5 percent design capacity to 145 percent,” a modification that was not permitted. The deadline for compliance was eventually extended to the end of 2013.

By April 2013, just two months from the initial deadline given in that Supreme Court decision, California still had 9,636 prisoners more than the court-imposed ceiling. The state submitted a proposal that involved relocating inmates to fire camps to fight wildfires, and preventing out-of-state prisoners from being returned. But upon review, the three-judge panel found that that still left California’s prisons some 4,170 prisoners over the hard limit.

--

But Gov. Brown, with Harris as his defense lawyer, did not agree. Harris’s office launched into a campaign of all-out obstruction, refusing to answer why they could not simply release low-risk, nonviolent inmates to conform to the Supreme Court’s request. “Defendants offered no explanation, however, why they could not release low-risk prisoners early,” the June 2013 ruling stated

--

This era of Harris’s tenure as attorney general escaped the recent close re-examination of some of the higher-profile cases in her prosecutorial past. During her brief presidential run, a memo from the tail end of this battle resurfaced; in late 2014, lawyers from her office claimed that nonviolent offenders needed to stay incarcerated, lest they lose bodies for fire camps in the wildfire-plagued state, as Jackie Kucinich of the Daily Beast reported.

Harris was quick to disavow the memo, claiming she had no knowledge of it and telling BuzzFeed News she was “shocked” by the argument. But it squares firmly with the sort of arguments her office was putting forward for multiple years preceding it. Harris, meanwhile, was known to run an extremely centralized attorney general’s office, with few things coming in or going out without her express sign-off.

In an actual party with morals, this would be disqualifying and she'd be excommunicated for being a vile Republican.

Sadly, this kind of thing is only all too common in the Democratic Party. That ****ty political party deserves to be dissolved.

Wbk. For the locals:

GABBARD: "I want to bring the conversation back to the broken criminal justice system that is disproportionately negatively impacting black and brown people all across this country today. Now Senator Harris says she's proud of her record as a prosecutor..., but I'm deeply concerned about this record.

There are too many examples to cite but she put over 1,500 people in jail for marijuana violations and then laughed about it when she was asked if she ever smoked marijuana.

(APPLAUSE)

She blocked evidence -- she blocked evidence that would have freed an innocent man from death row until the courts forced her to do so. She kept people in prison beyond their sentences to use them as cheap labor for the state of California.

(APPLAUSE)

And she fought to keep cash bail system in place that impacts poor people in the worst kind of way.

The bottom line is, Senator Harris, when you were in a position to make a difference and an impact in these people's lives, you did not. And worse yet, in the case of those who were on death row, innocent people, you actually blocked evidence from being revealed that would have freed them until you were forced to do so.

(APPLAUSE)

There is no excuse for that and the people who suffered under your reign as prosecutor owe -- you owe them an apology.

(APPLAUSE)"

  1. India will be THE MOST IMPORTANT country for the US in the next 100 year.
  2. India (alongside Japan, South Korea, Australia & Vietnam) helps us checkmate China the same way we did Russia
  3. Kamala would be the 1st Indian american VP ever.
  4. She would be a HUGE plus assets to seal the fast growing partnership between India & the US.
  5. We NEEDS Kamala for VP!

But I'm actually curious if you have an argument in favor of mass incarceration, not your opinion on ATRLers

Cringe. Biden could literally rape and shoot someone on 5th Avenue, and you would still vote for him cuz "Trump bad!", wouldn't you? Get some standards.

And nice try with that fake news. No one in this thread supports Trump

It's truly saddening that Kamala Harris shies away from her record because the vocal part of the left is so anti-order. America is in an authority crisis right now and people like her who could bring the balance between social justice and keeping the order is what is needed. Unfortunately the loud voices seem to be only ones to express their opinion or have the mics tended to them

May the moderates prevail as they have so far with Biden in the primary and squash the extremist fringes of both parties to unite that nation.

How does keeping low-level, non-violent criminals who were largely in for crimes fueled by poverty incarcerated so you can sacrifice them to help put out dangerous fires helping to maintain law and order?

Why are Gaga stans center-right or right-wing 99% of the time? :bibliahh: You DESERVE Trump. America needs CHANGE. People are on the streets asking for it! Again, imagine supporting moderacy during a pandemic. Did you happen to be born in the Baby Boomer era?

Lemme guess, you want increased funding for the police? You're out of order! :supaspaz:

The memo from 2014 leaked during the primary, but Kamala claimed it was something done without her knowledge.

These new documents show that this had been an ongoing court battle spanning 4 years where her office for nearly just as long was using the firefighter defense as one of their main arguments. So basically she didn't do her job for 4 years or we have proof she lied. :skull:

Nope!

Foreign policy just happens to be the issue I care most about and she would be perfect for the policies I care most about. So I support her.

India is in the process of finally becoming a an official US ally so I do care to have a VP that will pleasing news to them. Having the father of the VP being an Indian citizen won't hurt & the VP qualifying for Indian citizenship definitely won't hurt.

Kamala is also a CCP-Hawk and I love it.

Plus, everybody was wrong on marijuana including Bernie who voted for the Crime Bill no matter what reason he chooses to hang on to.

So it's not deal breaker to me.

You are welcome to care about whatever issue you chose to care most about. :clap3:

How did that change that Trump promised to bring worked out? Having a polarising figure is not what America needs. Someone who is grown up enough to be a "manager" in time of crisis for sure at least and for every day tasks. But also someone who understands that America isn't Europe and their people don't want to compromise between innovation and being held back with social nets. Also someone who needs to work on equity of chances a priori and not posteriori, so you don't try to balance the # of men/women, white/non-white, straight/non-straights at every level of our society. Only a moderate can work towards that.
