Sex doesn't sell anymore in music. Why?

Recommended Posts

07tandu

In the 2000s and early 10s it seemed literally everyone used their sex appeal to sell their music...

From the pop stars like Britney, Jlo, Xtina, Shakira etc. wearing no clothes on stage to rappers pushing a lot of "bikini models" in their MVs

Fast forward to now where the likes Billie Eilish, Ed Sheeran, The Weeknd, Adele, Taylor Swift, BTS, Drake, Post Malone etc. are some of the huge music acts but none of them really use "sex appeal" to push their music or their performances

Even artists like Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Beyonce who once would push their sex appeal in their music have now become a lot more conservative

Why has "sex" become almost obsolete in music now?

The gp is used to it so it doesnt have much of an effect anymore.

Today being sexy isnt enough.

I guess because we live in such a sexual liberated virtual world that sex appeal is not that interesting now.

Back in the day things like Britney being naked in toxic was controversial, but now it's like just meh.

Nothing is shocking anymore, we're all desensitized. Miley in 2013 was the most shocking it could get, now it's just tired. Artists certainly still have sexy MVs/music/etc but they can no longer rely on sex alone for success

Young audiences, who drive pop success, are so used to seeing half naked people thanks to Instagram that it's no longer special. People used to watch pop videos to get a dose of impossibly beautiful stars with perfect bodies, but now there seem to be an endless supply of Instathots who look way hotter than even the hottest pop stars.

Even pop stars like Dua who are very beautiful are giving more of a 'cool chick' vibe than super sexy. Selena got her hit of her era by appealing to people's emotions, the only focus is her face not her body. Gaga has been serving camp, not sexiness this era.

The only one really using sex is Ariana with her 7 Rings video but she also has strong themes and a huge personal narrative people are invested in.

This. Well articulated. It's just simply lost its shock and controversiality

We are just more accepting of sexuality now. It feels normal and less stigmatized

Because it’s lame and redundant. Only real talent is allowed now. And the GP realizes you don’t have to strip naked to be sexy either.

We are in the internet age now where sex is available wherever you go + no one watches videos anymore.

being good looking is a plus for sure, but even if youre not a hot girl/guy is a click away

A combination of multiple factors:

  • Mid 00s made people view scantily clad girls on MTV as the untalented who are only shaking their ass. It leads to a generation of pop girls being singer-songwriters.
  • Adele showed that sitting on a chair and keeping her clothes on was all you need to get a global smash hit in 2011 and minimalism became the trend.
  • When the economy goes down, people feel uncomfortable and want to cover their body with more clothing.837c5c210e36c533b85a6f519de8e1c0.png

The last point is because during bad economic times ppl want to get married more instead of hoeing around

It only works if your image is innocent and turns slutty. Britney successfully introduced this model into pop music and it was so successful that everyone decided to do it. But it only works best if your image takes a dramatic shift.

Miley is a good example like Britney. From Innocent and ‘covered’ to wearing a nude suit.
