luckystrike Posted March 3, 2020 Author Posted March 3, 2020 LET'S DUET! Thank you all for putting effort into this, I know timezones are ugly and working in pairs overall isn't the best thing but thank you all for pulling through and making this a great round PAIR 1: Rihanna @EriKills & Ariana Grande @Touch It Spoiler Quote For Team Arihana, a similarity we wanted to explore was the highly profile, highly toxic relationships both Ari and Rih have been through, which is why we chose songs dedicated to failed love. The first step is the "realization", as described in Rihanna's "Stupid In Love". In this song, Rihanna describes an abusive relationship, listing all the ways her lover is doing her wrong, with Rihanna ultimately concluding that she must escape this doomed relationship (I still love you, but I just can't do this, I may be dumb but I'm not stupid). Following up is Ariana, who sings about her own trials and tribulations with her failed relationship. In Better Off, she melancholically sings about escaping a toxic relationship. She has her walls up in order to steer clear of fighting, and rather than once again going through the headaches of a failed relationship, she has learned from the past and is "better off not being around ya". Both of these are some of Ari and Rih's most personal songs. Ariana has never performed Better Off live, likely because of the toxic Mac Miller relationship being the subject matter. Rated R was released shortly after the Chris Brown incident, and Stupid In Love is a dark premonition to what can happen if you stay in these toxic relationships. xx TouchKills PAIR 2: Fantasia @boys & Miguel @icy Spoiler Quote On Sure Thing, Miguel sings about a love that is undeniable and real, letting his partner know they can “bet that, never gotta sweat that.” He uses different types of objects throughout the song to reassure his lover that they’ll always be together no matter what happens. But as we listen to Truth Is, we hear Fantasia sing about the relationship ultimately failing as they meet again years ago and she reflects on her feelings. Her past lover tells her about the new person he’s seeing saying that he feels they will last, a subtle reminder of the way he used to say their love was a sure thing. She uses the song to reminisce on what they had, knowing she should have never left him. PAIR 3: Fifth Harmony @URBAN & Miley Cyrus @Kylie Jenner No submission PAIR 4: Nicki Minaj @Staryu & Lana Del Rey @Rence Spoiler Quote Hi, Rence and I chose Cherry by Lana Del Rey and The Crying Game by Nicki Minaj Lana and Nicki both have dated their fair share of toxic men, in both of these songs they are singing about a toxic relationship they were in. In Cherry, Lana is in love with her man but knows he is bad for her. He ruins her, all her beauty and innocence are destroyed by the relationship but she loves him anyway. I fall to pieces when I'm with you, I fall to pieces My cherries and wine, rosemary and thyme And all of my peaches (are ruined) Love, is it real love? It's like smiling when the firing squad's against you And you just stay lined up. Which leads in to Nicki and The Crying Game, Nicki is with a toxic man, they are fighting all the time, she loves him but she is tired of the pain, the physical abuse, and she has to decide if the relationship is worth the pain. Ain't no smilin' faces here, we slammin' doors and dishes Sayin' we don't miss each other, but it's all fictitious Sayin' that we had enough, but enough of what? Another slap to the face, another uppercut In the end, Lana and Nicki both left the toxic men they were with when they wrote these songs and they are both currently living their best lives. PAIR 5: Demi Lovato @Mr. Duff & Marina @Sabbath Spoiler Quote Our team has chosen to portray the two phases of the Hollywood dream: the uphill trek to get to the top and the challenges and dark side to sustain/maintain the dream once you've made it. ______________________________________ Was I meant to feel happy That my life was just about to change? One life pretending to be The cat who got the cream Oh, everybody said, "Marina is a dreamer" In Marina's Are You Satisfied? we see the beginning of the Hollywood story: getting the call that kickstarts the dream career and how at first her it is a positive aspect that motivates her to believe in herself even when others don't and makes her work hard for what she believes she deserves. AYS? represents every artist before they "make it": they're hopeful, excited, driven and ambitious for all the opportunities they're being presented with. Marina will not settle for an unsatisfying an average life and nobody will stop her in achieving her goal. ______________________________________ And then when this dream is achieved or even just an ounce of it is experienced, several things could change you and get you on the worse end of it, a vision of sustaining and composing yourself with the exposure of Hollywood. ______________________________________ Call me when it's over 'Cause I'm dying inside Wake me when the shakes are gone And the cold sweats disappear Call me when it's over And myself has reappeared Demi's Sober connects to this as the stage where "challenges" come in and the dreamers' demons get the best of him/her. We have heard the vulnerability of this song but it tackles not just a shallow sobriety issue but also on a deeper extent where the Hollywood dream gets the grip of us and tears us apart - it makes us do things that are sometimes out of our control and we break apart - as unintentional as it may be. Sober depicts a call for help - which a lot of popstars experience in their luscious but difficult life. It's also an apology - that the popstar has drowned in the rarities of life's misery and that hope is always out looming on us, even if it's just a dot of light in our array of darkness, that they deserve another shot and that they're sorry for the mess and brokenness. The relapse to turn again into addictive things is an obstacle for popstars - some got out of it but some don't. However, at the end of the tunnel, both songs are important aspects of a popstar's life that is cherished and appreciated by fans, critics and the industry alike - as this gives them the mark of a real popstar - imperfect and broken but ever as beautiful. ______________________________________ Both songs are very different - from the structure of the songs, to the melodies used, the opposite underlying meanings and the vocal progress on how the songs were sung. PAIR 6: Céline Dion @PinkBox & Lorde @Noah Spoiler Quote F A M E english translation: https://lyricstranslate.com/en/ordinaire-ordinary.html-0 Our theme is fame and our story starts from a younger perspective of the artist being new to fame and trying to not lose herself in Still Sane. She reminisces on her innocence before she tasted fame while still approaching her rise with wide eyes and optimism. This can be seen in the second verse with her stating, "Riding around on the bikes, we're still sane. I won't be her, tripping over onstage. Hey, promise I can stay good," meaning that she won't fall to the negative temptations and dark sides of fame that many other child stars have fallen to. This song also foreshadows the artist's desire for the celebrity lifestyle wearing off even though she is enjoying it now, with lyrics like, "I still like hotels, but I think that'll change. Still like hotels and my newfound fame." She also sings about how much she loves her work and how much time she spends on it in the chorus, "All work and no play never made me lose it. All business all day keeps me up a level. All work and no play keeps me on the new ****, yeah," while also recognizing the consequences a life without free time can have in the next line, "All work and no play, lemme count the bruises. All work and no play, lonely on that new ****, yeah." The next part of our story is from an older perspective of fame and the artist just wanting to be an ordinary girl in Ordinaire. She sings about how the initial glamour of fame has worn off, as foreshadowed in Still Sane, and now she just wants to relax with her family, but can't because of the demands of her career, "Sometimes, I don't want to do anything. I'd make music, having a drink with my mother, my sisters, my brothers, but I have to think about my career," in the first verse. She also sings about how she doesn't want to be idolized and viewed as anything other than a normal woman with lyrics like, "You see me as a goddess, I'm a woman, not a princess," which can also been seen in the lyric from Still Sane, "Only bad people live to see their likeness set in stone. What does that make me?" referencing the strangeness of being viewed as a living icon. These lyrics display the idea and historical trend that the greatest people are not met with praise and admiration until after their deaths, which makes her question if her work and the things she's doing now that have made her so revered are actually good or bad. Above all, she has never lost her passion for creating music, but she still recognizes the negative aspects of this career that she knew from the very beginning, which can be seen in the lyrics, "If I can make a confession... It's when I sing that I feel best. But this is a dangerous profession. The more you give, the more the world wants." PAIR 7: Janelle Monáe @Dessy & Katy Perry @kiiwii Spoiler Quote Katy Perry and Janelle Monáe sing about seductive passion through the context of one of our main senses, taste. “Take a Byte” knocks on traditional themes of sex and love in our society and essentially, defiantly break away from it. The sort of funky pop allure aids the point with this tension of passion. “Bon Appétit '' goes along with this breakaway and embraces this sort of sexual liberation, no longer hindered by what society thinks. The more upbeat pop + trap combination occurring here matches what is being implied through the lyrics. A fitting part of this is that it doesn’t make you stop bopping along from the previous song, it makes you more invested with its shift. You don’t stop eating when the appetizers are gone, do you? No, you get MORE food. Perhaps the best part of how these two songs fit together is the key words and phrases that we heard throughout: byte, oven, lick, appetite, wine and dine, help yourself, mocha, melt in your mouth, nibble, bon appétit, etc. They really send this signal to listeners that they stand out from the typical way songs about lust and/or love are told, which really make their pairing all the more ideal. PAIR 8: Kacey Musgraves @thecptz & Alicia Keys @Not Like The Movies Spoiler Quote "The Reality of Love" (Kacey Musgraves & Alicia Keys) In life, when it comes to love, in the beginning, it starts with complete infatuation, joy and positivity. You are entirely in love with the person and they are flawless to you. You see this person as an amazing human. However, as time goes by this all can tear apart and be turned into a Broken Relationship, where sadness and anger arises. Your opinion of the person changes because you get to see another side of the person. You still have love for them and there are still feelings but the hurt and pain outshines the love. Thus, our story portrays first a happy, enjoyable side to a relationship in the beginning and a sad, unfortunate end. Most people envision relationships are this perfect fairytale but this is not true in reality. In reality, you can experience many struggles which can turn your joyous relationship to broken in a heartbeat. With that being said, we decided to select Velvet Elvis by Kacey Musgraves and Tears Always Win by Alicia Keys as we feel these songs embody the context of our story most accurately. Velvet Elvis talks about Kacey describing the love of her life in a positive light and Tears Always Win highlights the pain and sadness which was caused by the relationship even though you may still have love for the person. You gotta do what you gotta do. ...and that is the reality of love. PAIR 9: Ellie Goulding @touya kinomoto & HyunA @Alena Spoiler Quote Hyuna + Ellie the story of leaving and being able to breathe again. n Get Outta My House the narrator sings about feeling trapped and like she can't breathe in her relationship. In the end of Get Outta My House the narrator has gotten out of the toxic relationship she was in. She's left the house. ↓ In Under Control the narrator is feeling much better and feels like she can finally breathe again because she is free and out of her toxic relationship. You can still feel the pain in the sound of Under Control but things are going much better for her already. ↓ Thanks to the narrator getting out of the house she was stuck in she feels like she's got things under control again. Lyrics: https://lyricstranslate.com/en/get-out-my-house-get-out-my-house.html https://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/elliegoulding/undercontrol.html ♥ Alena & Touya PAIR 10: Kelly Clarkson @Legend E & LOONA @K$Ellie Spoiler Spoiler This story is about losing yourself in a relationship and finding the strength to build yourself back up when it's over. You Love Me follows a toxic relationship in which the girl is described as having "a heart of gold" but is constantly made to feel like she's "not good enough". She's worn out by her partner who breaks her heart and loses her confidence. Her partner thinks less of her, he believes she's a sinking ship and insults her intelligence. She finally opens her eyes and realizes he's no good for her. The song ends with "truth is that you're not good enough". She gave her all to this relationship and is left with nothing. Now we get into Oh (Yes I Am), which starts with her asking "who am I". She's lost on her own and lacking in self-esteem. As the song progresses, she starts to rediscover herself and learn to love herself again. She sees the "real me" that was "once hidden inside the veil" and begins to heal after being heartbroken and belittled by her partner. By the end of the song, she says "Who would dare to define me so easily / Feel freedom in my true appearance". She's free from the relationship, comes full circle and learns to love herself again. @shelven @Overprotected @Astronomy @Invisibility @Genio

genio Posted March 3, 2020 Posted March 3, 2020 Spoiler Team Rihanna & Ariana Grande Rihanna: this song gives me chills, it's so sad and beautiful at the same time Ariana: Probably Ariana's most personal one after "ghostin". The lyrics, the vocals, everything is just so heartbreaking that it's perfect Team: Excellent job guys! A very dark theme and you guys picked two of the best songs to represent this theme of failed relationships Team Fantasia & Miguel Fantasia: gorgeous song. The lyrics are giving me chills and the fact that she's still in love with the guy and you can clearly hear the pain in her voice Miguel: This is very great chill r&b bop and I love the story and the lyrics behind it Team: I love how you guys made a great storyline out of the two songs that are about love but have two different, yet a very obvious continuous meaning. Team Nicki Minaj and Lana Del Rey Nicki: It's so different to hear Nicki sing about a toxic relationship with a man, this is a beautiful song! Lana: I wasn't in love (ironically) with the song but it fits this concept that you guys have chosen very well Team: The songs chosen for this "toxic" theme you guys went with were fitting and their songs came from a place of hurting and it was very clearly to hear in those sent entries. Team Demi Lovato and Marina Marina: A cute catchy song, I love that she is not giving a damn and following her dreams and goals Demi: One of the best ballads I've ever heard. To hear Demi singing those lyrics and knowing what happened so soon after just makes it even more devastating. Team: wow, finally a story that is not about love lol you guys did THAT. I loved this whole concept and the story you guys went with. First wanting to become famous and achieving your goal to be at the top and once you're there, everything can just crash down and be over in a day. Very Hollywood-like indeed. Awesome concept! Team Celine Dion & Lorde Lorde: I like the lyrics behind this song and that she's not trying to give herself up for fame and still trying to be the old Lorde. I didn't really like this song to be honest, but it's obviously a great pick for the concept you have chosen. Celine: This is my first time hearing a Celine song in French. It's very dramatic and has that "depressed" vibe to it, sounds like a CLASSIC to me yup. Team: A little similar to Demi and Marina, I like the hollywood/fame theme very much and the songs were very fitting for the round as well. I liked how the songs have a similar meaning but are being told from very different stages of a musicians career. A great effort. Team Janelle Monae & Katy Perry Janelle: a cute sexy bop, didn't really love it but it wasn't bad, I can see why you'd pick it for this theme/round Katy: Yap yap yap Team: of course Dessy will pick a sex round The songs you guys picked were really cute and I loved reading your explanation to your theme, well done. Team Kacey Musgraves & Alicia Keys Kacey: A cute love song. I like the Elvis reference and how well the first part of the story is being told in here. Alicia: Classic Alicia. This has a little happier sound for a song with a sadder meaning, but it's not bad at all. Team: I liked the concept you guys went with. A happy beginning with a sad ending, very hollywood drama like. The songs were representing it well too. Team Ellie Goulding & HyunA HyunA: Tell em how it is, OUT with the toxic! The feature making it even better. Loved the track and reading the lyrics of it. Ellie: Lovely choice. I enjoyed the song and the lyrics are very powerful. Healing processes like these should be written down and sung more often. Team: A short story telling but it was straight to the point and did its job. We love a happy ending. Well done Team Kelly Clarkson & LOONA Kelly: Beautiful track, I could hear her pain so strongly on this track and her voice was shining through it. Loona: very cute and cathy song representing the happier phase of love and a perfect self-esteem anthem. Team: This story telling is also nothing short of amazing. Love how it went from losing yourself and not feeling good enough anymore to coming out of a toxic relationship and loving yourself again, which is a legitimate (but not always easy to achieve) wish for everyone that has ever experienced a toxic relationship.
