'Cats' was never ready

Obviously the school yard assault by critics goes all the way back to the uncanny valley response to the trailer that was dropped during San Diego Comic Con. Universal wanted to get a trailer out for the film timed to the release of The Lion King, which was opening over Comic-Con weekend, to appeal to mass family audiences. Note overall it was a challenge for Uni to market this movie because Cats footage was never ready. In fact, Hooper was still working on the film up until the night of the pic’s world premiere in NYC on Dec. 16 and exhibition received a note over the weekend that future prints with better VFX are on the way. So, the proper lead-up time to campaign was never on Uni’s side, heck the new Lloyd Webber song performed by Swift “Beautiful Ghosts” didn’t even make the Oscar shortlist, though it received a Golden Globe nom.

The article talks about all the factors that ended in 'Cats' flopping at the BO.

Also, Deadline points out the movie was very well cast with a great balance of popular acts and respected actors.

Seems like Hooper just could not get it together in time and the release of the first unfinished footage really was the beginning of the end.

a huge mismanagement from universal, the fact that taylor's song didn't make the oscar deadline was the cherry on top

but the article seems to be focusing on VFX when it's the least of problems, the film has no plot = empty

that's the problem

a movie can be great even with awful VFX

Why would they rush it knowing it wasn’t finished? Of course it would look horrible! A delay from one year (next december) and i’m sure the movie wouldn’t have flopped

idk why they thought this should have been live aciton

an animated movie that wasnt overly kiddy would have been amazing :rip:

This. The stage production itself is uncanny valley, there was no need to make it even worse doing a live action.

It still would flop. Nobody was really that interested in it, and if they postponed for a year it wouldn't be a good press anyways... people would then expect something even better... they would be setting them selves even for a bigger flop

Let the rain of excuses begin :toofunny2: Taylor’s CATS is an ULTRA PANNED FLOP with MEGA FLOPS as singles and that’s all there is to it.

The excuses. Production began in December 2018 - 12 months is far longer for post-production than other big budget films.

Yeah but maybe then the CGI would have slayed, and it would get that kind of recognition.

Post production started only in April ( maybe even May cuz production wrapped end of April)...7 months wasnt long enough clearly with the VFX.

Post doesnt start til alittle after Filming is done.

But agreed cuz the main issue was lack of plot and some of the actors acting like they were in different movies.

Lmao the excuses :deadbanana4:

Also, I don't see how improved VFX would have changed anything? The problem is the naked human-cat monstrosities with toes designs to begin with. Only way of fixing Taylor Swift's Cats would be to take it back to the drawing board.

Better special effects would not have made this a better movie. THE MOVIE HAD NO STORYLINE. Cats introducing themselves for 2 hours then never heard from again. How dare they even make this film. Edit the whole story not the effects ! Jhuds CATS is offensively bad and stupid

I refuse to believe such a big budget film with all of the people working on it could afford to have such a messy release :rip: Sounds like they’re trying to save face

better release it in 2019 than release it in 2020 and it becomes the biggest bomb of the new decade. :cm:

I think the main reason why it's panned is because the cats don't look cute at all. Instead, they look like Instagram face filters

No literally, there's unfinished CGI all throughout the movie :rip: These aren't excuses, Universal literally rushed the movie out. The movie wasn't finished.
