jose168 Posted December 24, 2019 Author Posted December 24, 2019 60. My Type - Saweetie Sampling an awesome crunk song is a recipe for success here, giving Saweetie her first notable song to date. I expect many more remixes. 59. Hot Girl Summer - Megan Thee Stallion/Ty $/Nicki Minaj Another sample - best song of all time (Act Up) - makes the track at least baseline good. All 3 acts deliver solid performances in this feel good summer (autumn I guess) single. 58. Not For Love - Show Me The Body A Noise Rock/Garage banger with an insane vocal performance. 57. I'll Be Your Girl - Carly Rae Jepsen Another Carly song? The rock and ska influences! The brass! The tones of jealousy! The yelling (for her)! The pleading in the bridge! I'll be your girl is a complete departure for Carly. 56. Mona - Foxygen A bass heavy disco tinged cut with sometimes sultry, sometimes goofy vocals. 55. The Hunger - Bat For Lashes We stan a vampire! I also love the solemn synthpop direction Kahn took with the record overall, it's where I wanted Florence to go with her music style. 54. Jerusalem, New York, Berlin - Vampire Weekend I didn't realize Ezra was Jewish! It's an interesting piece on his faith and his feelings on Israel and nationalism. 53. Death In Midsummer - Deerhunter I actually like this less than I did when I made the list but I'm also lazy to swap it out. So check it out if you like a veeery mellow folksy track here and there. 52. Keeping Tabs - Cuco/Suscat0 And now I guess she's on coke. What better way to do a psychedelic rock track than about a lot of drugs. 51. I Don't Think I Can Do This Again - Mura Masa/Clairo The drop on the track is very new wavy so I'm sold. Clairo does a great job with her performance here.
Lazuli Posted December 24, 2019 Posted December 24, 2019 i'll be your girl is such a middling song for me... like, the chorus and the reggae-ish verses dont really match? the hunger, hgs, j,ny,b, death in midsummer
Eeveelution Posted December 24, 2019 Posted December 24, 2019 The Hunger I'll Be Your Girl was a grower for me, definitely an interesting direction for her.
TheWayWeWere Posted December 24, 2019 Posted December 24, 2019 I'll Be Your Girl is cute, but not among my faves from D
ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 24, 2019 ATRL Moderator Posted December 24, 2019 IBYG is great it’s top 5 on the album. Reminds me of return of Saturn era ND my type slaps I actually became obsessed w freak a leak this year
ATRL Moderator kelly-clarkson Posted December 24, 2019 ATRL Moderator Posted December 24, 2019 I'll Be Your Girl is cute. I need to listen Dedicated again!
potent Posted December 25, 2019 Posted December 25, 2019 Jerusalem New York Berlin is cute! One of the tracks I remember most from the too long album lol The Hunger I really wish I had gotten into this song sooner
jose168 Posted December 25, 2019 Author Posted December 25, 2019 Merry Christmas everyone who celebrates! 50. It's Only Smiles - Periphery Periphery bring out a pop-punk rock number up there with the mid-2000s era classics. I'm instantly taken back to my Escape the Fate, All Time Low etc and I am UNASHAMED. 49. Intentions - Big Boi/CeeLo Green/Sleepy Brown Intentions is a smooth funky laid back RnB track in the vein of Outcast's "I like the way you move". Looking forward to new Big Boi in 2020! 48. Make Art Not Friends - Sturgill Simpson It's hard to pin Sturgill down to a single genre and this song is the pinnacle, hitting sweet spots of psychedelic rock, country twang, and an amazing synth lead opening number. 47. F*ck It I Love You - Lana Del Rey An incredibly honest song where Lana opens up about struggling with addiction, and simultaneously one of the most upbeat and catchy tracks on NFR. 46. Do Me - Kim Petras Sex sex sex. Hypersex. Kim plays a skank here and I love every minute, and Do Me also features some of her strongest vocal peaks. 45. Summer Girl - Haim This jazzy comeback track was a bit jarring for me at first, simply because it's not what I expected from a HAIM track. But it's a lane that suits them well, and in an era when many many acts are serving "throwback" disco/house/new wave inspired tracks, I'm glad they can reinvent themselves. 44. Polyaneurism - of Montreal of Montreal are back with their catchiest set of singles in years! This love quarell story straight out brooklyn hits way too close to home, as Ive come close to a polyaneurism myself. 43. Fear Inoculum - Tool The comeback title track met mixed reviews from critics, many whom deem it a rehash of many parts of their old work. As someone who isn't super familiar with their previous works, that wasn't an issue so I was able to enjoy it as face value. A pleasant clean stoner rock with cool dramatic vocal performances. Some bits were a bit *too* clean, but it they really shine in live renditions. 42. No Drug Like Me - Carly Rae Jepsen Where Party for One and Now That I Found you excelled in joyous pop candy earworms, soaring synths and the whole 9, they lacked a certain je ne sais quoi. I was worried for the project, then 'Drug' cured me of my fears, showing me Carly was still ready to take chances and explore new sounds and themes. Final Carly song on the list! 41. Cruel Summer - Taylor Swift Cruel Summer acts like an amalgamation of all the themes of love Taylor has tackled in her discography, and the track soars. Lyrically it's up with her best, and the catchy light hearted pop feels like a fusion of Red and Reputation. She's not reinventing the wheel here, she is playing to her strengths and it works.
ATRL Moderator Legend E Posted December 26, 2019 ATRL Moderator Posted December 26, 2019 Summer Girl, Cruel Summer
Green Posted December 26, 2019 Posted December 26, 2019 Cruel Summer, Fear Inoculum, F*ck It I Love You
Lazuli Posted December 26, 2019 Posted December 26, 2019 **** it i love you, summer girl, no drug like me, cruel summer taylor did reinvent the wheel with "he looks up grinning like a devil"
SLIME Posted December 26, 2019 Posted December 26, 2019 Not you being more up to date on new Big Boi than I. tsk tsk. I feel like sonically FIILY is kind of the Lana version of an Ariana song or something, I like it a lot. Do Me is aight but I prefer other songs from Ms. Petras. Summer Girl is my fav on this page
TheWayWeWere Posted December 26, 2019 Posted December 26, 2019 FIILY is so great I hate that it was overshadowed by TG \ Summer Girl is so good and MV is genius
ATRL Moderator kelly-clarkson Posted December 26, 2019 ATRL Moderator Posted December 26, 2019 Cruel Summer One of the standouts of Lover
jose168 Posted December 26, 2019 Author Posted December 26, 2019 I feel like I can move faster but already committed to 10 a set.. So here goes 40. DHL - Frank Ocean A departure from Blonde and endless, the music reminds atmospheric but he went for more of a banger here. The lyrics are hilarious, and I appreciate him tackling LGBT themes more openly than ever. 39. So Heavy I Fell Through The Earth (Art Mix) - Grimes Love pseudo-pretentious ambient noise! 38. Calm Down aka I Should Not Be Alone - Ezra Furman If you've ever felt so mad you don’t want to be unsupervised, the song is self explanatory here. And the angsty punk tone to it makes it all the better. 37. Livin' A Lie - Foxygen The song builds up to a finally that never really comes… but that aside it's a great track. Lucious instrumentals that build with glittery synths throughout. 36. Hungry Child - Hot Chip Fantastic house number, and the gospel harmonies are a nice touch. 35. Pure Water - Migos I forgot this came out this year until I saw all my plays on last fm, but revisiting it I can see why I enjoyed it. It's no Stir Fry, but it is a quintessential Migos track. And while these days those can be generic, trite nonsense, when the beat is right it's right. 34. 7 Rings - Ariana Grande I was an O7RH on release, but the appeal grew on me. It's a fun braggadocious track, and similar to Bad Guy, the larger than life character she plays sells the track. 33. Adore You - Harry Styles An all around great pop tune, Harry finds a sweet spot of 80s rock influence, contemporary pop music, and his own personality. It's not surprising that this is on track to be his biggest radio hit. 32. Cash Sh*t - Megan Thee Stallion/DaBaby Megans biggest single this year and for good reason, Cash Sh*t is brazy, sexy and cocky. The flow is very fun and signature Megan, a standout track that really marks her as a persona. 31. Way to the Show - Solange Way to the Show is the jewel of When I Get Home for me. It has all of the best elements from her fantastic flow, lucious instrumentation, and the backing vocals!!
ATRL Moderator kelly-clarkson Posted December 26, 2019 ATRL Moderator Posted December 26, 2019 Adore You is my favorite song Harry released this year 7 rings is a bop
potent Posted December 27, 2019 Posted December 27, 2019 Adore You is cute, came too late for my countdown this year, but should chart next year instead, it's growing on me a lot lately I don't know many of the others, but some of them sound really interesting!
kiiwii Posted December 27, 2019 Posted December 27, 2019 the way i had to listen to The Hunger much later for me to appreciate it. Adore You Livin' a Lie, one of the standouts indeed
