Botnus' Favorite Pop-related Music Of 2019

Recommended Posts

Today I've finished all of my backlog for 2019. All four thousand something of those albums. I made various lists and posted them on various music websites to share my love of music this year, and basically I was  done. I saw the notification earlier today and I thought 'oh yeah, ATRL does this too!'. I did ATRL's Best Of last year in quieter atmosphere and even more lukewarm response, which is fine, I enjoyed making it. Anyway, I thought why not do this again? I figured unlike last year where I posted ALL the kind of music I listened to, this time around I'll focus solely on pop related music. So from your mainstream top 40, indie pop, synthpop, pop rock, or basically anything that has a certain degree of pop music's accessibility in them. There's no objective measurement to judge whether certain genres have a pop feeling to them or not, so I guess it all depends on me. My plan is to share my favorite pop-infused songs from this year. I'm thinking maybe 25-30 songs. 3-5 songs per day. Not ranked or sorted in any fashion, it just what comes through my mind first. If I can make it before the deadline I'll post favorite albums too. No pressure.

1. 100 Gecs - Money Machine

600x600bb.jpg

Album: 1000 Gecs

Genre: Bubblegum Bass

It's been a pretty good year for 100 Gecs, they've been the hipster's favorite, from your RYM users, P4K, all that good stuff. Their music offers some of of the most assertive form of boom bap boom bap Hypersaturated type of bass-focus music like Sophie, Slayyyter etc. To be honest, the album didn't do much for me. Except for this song. The vocoder'd vocal and massive bassy production is a staple ingredients in the album, but there's something in the way the sawing bass mixed with the ultra catchy chorus that is too fun to not sing along to. So props to them.

2. Gold Spectacles - Courtside

Album: Gold Spectacles

Genre: Indietronica

The first thing I noticed when I listened to this song for the first time was how much the chord progression reminded me of Charlie Puth's songs. You can't tell me that the verses didn't ring Puth's How Long or the other one that escaped me right now. But nevermind that, it's still a solid indiepoptronica track. Slick production, fantastic chorus, and sexy vocal (I really like the 'cause I know, I never wanna hangout' part), all around enjoyable song.

3. AAAMYYY - Poli Sci

600x600bb.jpg

Album: Body

Genre: Electropop

Had I skipped my research, I would've never thought that this lady's Japanese. I mean, sure, half of the song is sung in japanese, but the intro with the sultry half whisper delivery was sung in English with no accent at all. Never heard of her before but this song (and the album really) put her in my radar. Super fun electropop record.
