Sorry for being late in getting to this and also THANK YOU for using a similar format to what I do! :heart2:

The run from BMO to fallen alien is just FILLED with talent. Even with that Blood Orange record being kinda meh, that song pick is fantastic. Bad Idea is SO FREAKING GOOD.

And yes, great write-up for Barefoot in the Grass! **** album imo, fantastic song.

Pretending Dula Peep's name is actually Juul-a Peep now :-* Future Nostalgia is ****ing amazing. She really stepped up the game with her tracks this year. I really hope she releases an awesome album next year.

Hmm you make a good point about Dysfunctional being removed from the Kay album, which I was still wondering why it was removed since it's pretty great. The Kali track tho is definitely GOAT. Talk - a fantastic song on a crap album. Lost Without is so so good. JUICE YAS BITCH!

Ashamed is a fantastic pic. It was the first song I heard from Omar too, back in January I think. I was so drawn into how kinda experiemental it is, how it goes up and down, his voice changing throughout the whole song... what a track. Awesome pick for Orville too!

ALSO WAIT BITCH how are you ahead of me in terms of finishing up your letters ihdcinilcejiofhe I need to get my **** together!

Don't mind me, just catching up

1st update:
I'm with Ms .Eater on this one, ms. Paak is kinda over for me; although I did find Ventura to be better than Oxnard. Bad Idea :heart2:
The Cellophane blasphemy is not it, but I love that you went with Fallen Alien, my favourite song too. I love how she exudes her emotions and anger on it, how vocal and lyrical it is, and the aggressive production... I just go off to it each time.
Bad Guy was always one of my least favourites on Billie's album actually but since it became an overplayed hit I don't dislike it anymore.
DHL was cute, but I preferred In My Room from the two singles

2nd update:
ms Dula Peep is showing growth, she always was the most promising new pop girl. who knows she might end up releasing the E•mo•tion of the 2020s next year.

Kaytranada's album was  but 10% was the best song on it fo sho. We gotta thank ms Uchis for that!

Juice a classic, deserved to smash indeed, but I'm glad she's smashing nonetheless

10% :heart2: I'm playing Bubba a lot these days, it's so good

Finale set starting now.

Songs of 2019

Set 3

Peggy Gou|Hungboo (DJ-Kicks)

Quote

Love the marrying of the East Asian style instrumentation with the house production.

It's the kind of song that feels super short; the kind of song you can get lost in and just want to play over and over again.

Rico Nasty & Kenny Beats|Big Titties (feat. Baauer and EarthGang)

This about sums up this song in a nutshell :katie2: :

ROSALÍA|Aute Cuture

Image result for rosalia aute cuture

Quote

I have no idea what Rosalia is saying ever, but at this point, does it really matter?

Of course I love her signature flamenco pop that's so readily apparent but the combination of her flamenco pop with the horns crafted quite the addicting song.

ScHoolboy Q|CrasH

Image result for schoolboy q crash talk

Quote

Q kinda disappointed me with CrasH Talk. After the amazing Blank Face LP,

he took a step backwards and put out an album that was too mainstream that resulted in a poor album.

That brings us to CrasH, one of the few bright spots on the album.

With the interesting ticking-like beat, the great hazy, almost sandy-like production, an excellent flow, and strong personal lyrics about needing to find balance in his life in order to have peace of mind, it accomplishes everything that a good Rap song needs.

Steve Lacy|Like Me (feat. DAISY)

Image result for steve lacy apollo xxi

Quote

I'm not the kind of guy that spends too much time focusing on lyrics

(I'm more of a production>lyrics when it comes to what makes a song great).

But in a song like this where you can't help but pay attention to what's being said, it almost magnifies the quality of the song.

And in this case, the lyrics make the song that much better.

I say this to say it's one of the most relatable songs I've had the pleasure of listening to as a gay man.

The writing isn't even that complex, it just hits home for me.

I imagine it may hit home for a lot of you guys too.

Tame Impala|Patience

Image result for tame impala patience

Quote

While the previous track Like Me was all about it's songwriting, this one I love purely for it's production. It's got such layered instrumentation that one picks up on multiple listens and much like Peggy's Hungboo, it's very easy for me to get lost in the song.

Not to mention, it's psychedelic and super dreamy.

Why do y'all dislike this track so much again?

Tinashe|Perfect Crime

Image result for tinashe songs for you

Quote

It's abundantly clear to me that RCA did far too much meddling when it came to the process of making music.

There's no reason for her to have released songs like Flames, Player, and Superlove (even though I like it),

when she can come up with bops like this :biblio: Criminal.

I love the duality of this song.

It's one of those kinds of songs where you're bopping along to it but then when you pay attention to the lyrics, you realize it's kind of ****ed up.

I always feel a way when I'm shaking my ass to this song and realize soon after she's singing about how her last relationship ****ed her up (but I just can't help myself :thing:).

Toro y Moi|Miss Me (feat. ABRA)

Image result for toro y moi outer peace

Quote

Another one of my faves that disappointed me this year, Chaz did manage to drop a  gem in Miss Me.

There's a certain sparseness to the production, but not to the point where it's devoid of substance.

The beat and sort-of buzzing like synth pairs well together and ABRA is a perfect fit on top of all that.

The Weeknd|Blinding Lights

Image result for the weeknd blinding lights

Quote

This isn't exactly the direction I wanted/expected him to go down but I'm actually all for it.

While Heartless sucks ass, Blinding Lights is so good.

I love that he's really leaning into the 80s synth-y pop style of production. I

t's the kind of thing of thing you'd hear in old 80s video games or montages in 80s films or TV shows,

which adds to this level of nostalgia that I feel whenever I listen to it.

Yellow Days|It's Real Love

Image result for yellow days it's real love spotify

Quote

Final shameless plug!

I love that I'm ending my songs list with an artist who I feel is really tapping into his potential.

One of the reasons I love this song (besides the psychedelic production) is the lyrics, which is unusual for me.

There's a clear distinction between the positive and optimistic view on love in this offering

compared to any number of somber tracks from a year or two ago.

I don't want to call it an evolution, but it is nice to see my boy not feeling depressed about the state of affairs in his life. A welcome change of pace!

Now that I finished my songs list, I'll be listing my favorite albums of the year. Much like my songs list, I'll simply be doing this in alphabetical order and given the fact that I haven't listened to many albums this year, I'll just be showcasing the 5 albums that I enjoyed the most this year. There are a bunch of other albums that I also enjoyed but I either didn't listen to get the chance to listen to them much or didn't enjoy them as much as I did my top 5.  Also, just like I have a favorite song, I have a favorite album (which will probably be much more obvious) that I'll showcase when I do my decade end countdown.

Albums of 2019

Ariana Grande|thank u, next

Almost every album in my top 5 has a quality to them that helps them standout from each other; a quality that makes me appreciate them a whole lot. For the princess of pop's fifth entry into her catalog, its versatility is what I appreciate the most. In her grief, after ending a publicized engagement and dealing with the passing of her ex-boyfriend Mac Miller, Ariana did the only thing that she could think of and went back to the studio to record new music, a cathartic experience I'm sure. And in such a short period, Ariana (and with the help of trusted friends and collaborators) put together an excellent album that covered a range of energies and feelings. From singing about unattainable love, to singing about craving attention and needing space, to singing about falling in love with a vision of someone and not who they really were, to singing about **** buddies and being braggadocios, there's something for any mood you're in, and with the natural progression in her sound, thank u, next is a welcome addition to her ever growing catalog.

See: imagine, needy, in my head

Blood Orange|Angel's Pulse

If anyone remembers from my previous Best Of, Negro Swan was one of my most anticipated albums of 2018. I loved the previous Freetown Sound, and after hearing the marvelous Charcoal Baby, how could I not be? Unfortunately, the result was an album that, while the concept surrounding the intersectionality of queerness and Blackness was fascinating, seemed underdeveloped musically speaking. That's why I enjoyed this lil mixtape very much; the strength of this project is in its simplicity. That's not to say there's no substance to Angel's Pulse, it's just that the music to me was given much more room to breathe and as such, created immaculate atmospheric R&B soundscapes mixed with psychedelic undertones. Beyond the production on this album, the thoughts that Dev put into writing were extensive. He tackles themes/topics such as lamentation, self-worth, feeling good (or feeling right), a liberation of sorts, and so much more. It's funny, Angel's Pulse clocks in around 30 minutes and still manages to use that time wisely; with each song being very short, it's clear Dev was efficient with his writing in order to say what was on his mind.

See: Dark & Handsome (feat. Toro y Moi), Benzo, Take It Back (feat. Justine Skye, Arca, and JOBA)

FKA twigs|MAGDALENE

Quote

A lot of my feelings about this album can be found in earlier write up about fallen alien as that is essentially how I feel about the album as a whole. On MAGDALENE, there's a certain duality that's present. twigs (in my opinion) was always known for the off-kiltered, left-field production style and singing that has been present since her EP1 days. On her latest release, that eccentric style of production is still ever present, but with more of an emphasis on her songwriting. It's not that her writing was really lazy prior to MAGDALENE, it's just that, on MAGDALENE, it's clear the writing is on equal footing with the production and now both are sharing the stage. Quite simply, this is a sad and melancholic album (not surprising, many of the songs are of heartbreak and love loss) and I feel that the style of the songs was necessary in order to get out her feelings effectively. @Eeveelution described MAGDALENE as "almost like her vision of a singer/songwriter album" and I like that description because to me it means that twigs experimented with a style in a way that only she could and produced an immaculate body of work that rivals (and possibly exceeds) an outstanding debut album.

See: home with you, sad day, daybed

LION BABE|Cosmic Wind

Image result for lion babe cosmic wind spotify

Quote

A controversial choice? Maybe so.gif. But this is one that I feel comfortable making. As I recall from the reception of the album, people tended to write off the album because it lacked the bops and up-tempo tracks that their debut album was chock full of. And while I appreciate a good bop like any other gay, I also appreciate what the slower tracks and the mid-tempos had to offer. This album came out at a very pivotal time for me this year; I had gone through a pretty tough situation where I was unsure of what the outcome would be and the general vibe that I got from many of the songs (Never Before, When I Told You..., Hit The Ceiling, Honey Dew, Can I See It, So Long, etc.) on the album was one of nostalgia. That nostalgia evoked a sense of calmness that helped me get through what occurred, and I'm very grateful for that. A lot of that is due to the fact that Jillian has such a soothing, velvety, and silky smooth voice that floats all throughout the album. I actually prefer this to their debut; while their debut had higher highs, it was too inconsistent for my liking. Cosmic Wind is an album with bops for me to jam to and mid-tempos that provide me with those good vibes that put me at ease. It's an airy, bright, twinkling, and majestic body of work, much like the album cover that represents it. Overall, this made for an album that had tons of staying power with me all throughout the year.

See: Never Before, No Rules, Honey Dew

Tinashe|Songs For You

ahh my ****ing fave

It's no secret that Tinashe had a rough 2018 to say the least. She released her worst performing album (both critically and commercially) to date, went through a pretty embarrassing breakup with her ex-boyfriend Ben Simmons, and ended up getting dropped by splitting with RCA, the label that's been giving her trouble for the past 5 years. But that's all culminated into the project before you all. Much like Ariana, after going through a pretty disheartening experience, she got back into the studio and put her heart into her music. The versatility she showed on Songs For You was welcomed as just like thank u, next, there's something for every kind of mood. Want that experimental Tinashe? Look no further than Life's Too Short, Die a Little Bit, and So Much Better. Want to listen to some pop? Save Room For Us and Perfect Crime has you covered. Want some urban knocks? Feelings, Hopscotch, Cash Race, and Link Up go awf. Just as the sound is diverse, she addresses different topics like heartbreak and the ending of relationships, what it's done to her confidence and her mental well-being (Touch & Go, Remember When) while also creating anthems that help you feel like a badass bitch too. While Songs For You may not be her best album, it IS a solid body of work. It's welcome return to form and I look forward to where she goes from here.
