Hug Posted December 12, 2019 Posted December 12, 2019 Love the NCT Dream and The Weeknd songs also the style descriptors are such a great touch. I feel like the mood or the vibe of a song is more...important? Than genre labels so those types of descriptors are nice to have.
smholiv Posted December 12, 2019 Author Posted December 12, 2019 40. DaBaby - Suge Styles: Hip Hop, fun This is just really silly and fun and therefore GREAT. 39. Men I Trust - Found Me Styles: Laid back indie I like the laid back approach to her vocals and the production here. It's a very moody piece that would probably be best in the background of something, but is simultaneously just good if you're in a chill mood. 38. James Blake - Power On Styles: electronic, kind of like a slightly indie romcom vibe I think this album really came and went huh? For the most part people weren't as into this as they had been some of his previous work, and while I don't necessarily have strong feelings about it, I was kind of struck by how... romantic? the album was at various points. I think this one struck me the most for that fact. Then again I have weird taste in James considering my favourite album of his was the one before this. 37. Slayyyter - Mine Styles: synthpop, disco?, '90s?, house? I want to avoid just describing Slayyyter's album/mixtape as just "bop" but it really was! There were consistently great songs from her and each one kind of explored different keystones of pop music in unique ways. 36. Freddie Gibbs - Crime Pays Styles: rap with an artsy vintage twist I wasn't as interested in his output from this year compared to Pinata, but this song definitely excelled and I went back to it often.

Wish there were more artists like her in today's Western music scene that just wanted to make fun music and didn't care so much about coming off as deep or insightful or whatever.
smholiv Posted December 12, 2019 Author Posted December 12, 2019 35. Normani - Motivation Styles: '00s pop and R&B twisted together, the #1 video on 106 & park This was soooo solid I was shook. I honestly could not get this out of my head for the longest time, and listening to it as I type this is just making me endlessly happy. She did such a great job with this and really established herself as one to watch for pop girls. She was already my favourite from 5H, and its really all paying off. 34. Danny Brown - Savage Nomad Styles: Danny Brown He can't be pinned down and I love that. Endlessly quotable, endlessly addictive, dripped with personality. Not doing albums but if I did I think this would be top 5. 33. Charli XCX x Clairo x Yaeji - February 2017 Styles: electronic, melancholy pop I had very mixed thoughts on this album as a whole but right from the start this track towards the end caught me. There's so much to love about this fairly simple, short track and I'm just impressed at that alone! I love certain subtle aspects - yaeji's backing vocals with that slight distortion, the call and response delivery with Clairo, and most of all the chorus' energy. 32. Kevin Abstract - Mississippi Styles: autotune sad boy Maybe I like looking out the window while it rains at night. 31. Solange - Sound of Rain Styles: quirky beat R&B, atmospheric Maybe I love artistically twerking while outside while it rains at night.

Lazuli Posted December 12, 2019 Posted December 12, 2019 power on yaaaaas a true highlight on assume form motivation feb 2017 is nice but the features are SO pointless tbh
Ewan Chaos Posted December 12, 2019 Posted December 12, 2019 Agreed on Suge, such a fun bop. Need to check out more of Men I Trust; liked that song. And all the gays love See You Slayyyyyyyyter so I guess I'll need to check her out. Motivation is AWESOME, I don't really care much for 5H or their solo stuff, but that song is proper amazing. Wish it was a bigger smash but ah well. Great Danny pick and great Charli pick too. nnnnn the Solange description.
ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 12, 2019 ATRL Moderator Posted December 12, 2019 Sound of Rain The best song on her album, thanks Pharrell Mine ... there are better songs from her. Suge is a bop
SLIME Posted December 12, 2019 Posted December 12, 2019 Don’t Start Now, Blinding Lights, Suge, Motivation, my faves Danny and Charli (love their collabs) back to back... oh yes i thought Mine was basic at first but it kinda grew on me all year! Slayyy is a keeper
smholiv Posted December 14, 2019 Author Posted December 14, 2019 in hindsight maybe i should've started this a bit later! but next update coming soonish. as in sometime this weekend maybe
Eeveelution Posted December 14, 2019 Posted December 14, 2019 Sound of Rain is one of the best on WIGH
K$Ellie Posted December 14, 2019 Posted December 14, 2019 Don't Start Now didn't hit me until this week needy is one of my faves on tu,n The NCT song was really cute, I haven't kept up with Prettymuch but it seems to be their best song since their debut The middle part of February 2017 was cute but I didn't like the rest Mine is a major bop and Motivation is cute
smholiv Posted December 14, 2019 Author Posted December 14, 2019 30. Billie Eilish - when the party's over changing my formatting because i can so this is not the last you'll see of Billie and regardless of whether or not she's in her teen angst phase, mayhaps i'm joining her? for some reason her album clicked SO much with me and i loved the back and forth between sad girl ballads like this and the weird angsty bops (that you'll see later on in the list). regardless, if she was coming out this strong with her debut i can only eagerly anticipate her next moves.
smholiv Posted December 14, 2019 Author Posted December 14, 2019 29. Jai Paul - Do You Love Her Now Earlier this year the album he had been working on but had been leaked several years ago was finally "released" and I stanned all over again. But like... I STANNED all over again. I had forgotten just how good it really was and really put two and two together that it's a best of decade type material. His songs he released newly this year were equally as strong imo, and make me happy he's back to releasing music(?)
ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 14, 2019 ATRL Moderator Posted December 14, 2019 i never really liked wtpo too much, thought you would like songs like ilomilo more
smholiv Posted December 14, 2019 Author Posted December 14, 2019 Just now, Madame X said: i never really liked wtpo too much, thought you would like songs like ilomilo more there'll be more she kind of dominated my list this year
smholiv Posted December 14, 2019 Author Posted December 14, 2019 28. Lim Kim - YO-SOUL Styles: ethereally noisy Asian masterpiece i don't usually listen to ~experimental type music but i was really intrigued by Lim Kim, a kpop artist who typically did sort of retro/doo-woppy style stuff in the past completely overhauling her style to create this statement piece of an EP that was loud, noisy, but filled with exciting electronic styles and little touches that took things to the next level. "Yellow" is probably the most obvious example of her blending this cutting edgy electronic style with Asian musical themes, but I liked this one and think its a more underrated track. Anyway cool listen but DEFINITELY not for everyone.
World Eater Posted December 14, 2019 Posted December 14, 2019 Sandy, Dua, Kacey, Slayyyter, Charli, Solange and Jai I agree with tun being a step down (also with needy being a highlight) still though, it's pretty impressive to release two great albums in such short span of time HAIM were really consistent this year, I'm really impressed, although I'd say NIII was my least favorite single out of the three they put out Bandana was a slight disappointment in hindsight, but Crime Pays was def one of the highlights
smholiv Posted December 14, 2019 Author Posted December 14, 2019 27. Clairo - Softly Styles: dreamy, indie-ish?, bedroomy? bi-sexual? This album snapped out of nowhere. I hadn't heard much about Clairo from before but I decided to give her album a listen and was caught off guard by how much I liked it and connected with a lot of the themes and musical styles explored. Hint: this wont be the last you see of her This song was one of my favourites despite being more on the subdued side. I like how it hints at, and almost fully expresses, its emotions in this way where it feels like something bubbling up. I find it relatable and feel that same kind of earnestness in the production itself. As far as Clairo as an artist, i'm more into what she's doing with this album than some of her more bedroomy stuff but that's just me?
ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 14, 2019 ATRL Moderator Posted December 14, 2019 I don't remember any of her songs besides Bags I flopped with going back to a lot of artists this year. That's an interesting Lim Kim choice, not Yellow or Digital Khan or Sal-Ki?
