bestfiction Posted December 6, 2019 Author Posted December 6, 2019 (edited) HONORABLE MENTIONS Albums Roll With Me Natasha Bedingfield I think I’m one of the two Natasha Bedingfield stans left in this world (hi Lukey) so I was excited by her comeback. Roll With Me is entirely produced by Linda Perry so the album fells quite solid and cohesive; yet unfortunately there aren't many standouts outside the singles. The title track, though, has very nice horns and Kick It feels more mature lyrically. Essentially, it’s same old Natasha and I’m just glad she’ out here making music. Favorites: Kick It, Roller Skate, Hey Papa Cuz I Love You Lizzo It’s just hard to resist Lizzo’s charisma and attitude on this LP. It’s a very nice mixture of R&B, Funk and Doo-wop but I guess it wasn’t very diverse so it’s only in HMs. Still, glad for Lizzo to have her moment. Favorites: Like a Girl, Juice, Truth Hurts K-12 Melanie Martinez Ok, I was a bit excited to see what Melanie was gonna to come up with after the controversies that surrounded her and I liked Cry Baby to an extent. Unfortunately, K-12 turned out to be a huge mixed bag. The concept itself and the aesthetics of the movie that K-12 was promoted with are very pleasing but the album has a very dated 2017’d production and some of the lyrical themes, mostly the woke ones, are straight up cringeworthy (Trump-alluding Principal is the worst offender in that regard). Still, I enjoyed the songs that seem to have more personal background, such as Show and Tell and Recess. Overall, I’m glad that Melanie sticks to her guns and artistic choices, even though they aren’t for me. Favorites: Class Fight, Show & Tell, Recess _____________________________ Songs Old Town Road Lil Nas X feat. Billi Ray Cyrus and the gang I wasn’t really a huge fan of the track, it’s very fun and all though. I’d like to give Lil Nas a shoutout for effortlessly obliterating charts, it’s was such a delight to observe. MOOD4EVA Beyoncé, Jay-Z and Childish Gambino feat. Oumou Sangaré I haven’t been very huge on Beyoncé lately, however, MOOD4EVA brings us fun Beyoncé back with her “I’m so unbothered…” verse. It's been a while since I was entertained by anything from her that much. I hope she comes back to serve that personality with B7. Goblin Sulli RIP legend So sad but I've got to apprecitated the song and the rest of her EP after she passed away. It's quite haunting and it becomes even more so given the circumstances. bestfiction Posted December 6, 2019 Author Posted December 6, 2019 DISHONORABLE MENTIONS Albums LOVE + FEAR MARINA It’s a shame that such an amazing songwriter as Marina decided to waste her talents on this uninspired generic mess. The production is extremely bland and cheap, the lyrics are whack most of the time. Maybe this album would’ve been better if she tried something acoustic for these songs but oh well… That being said, there are still some songs where the Marina we all knew and loved shined through the basicness of this record. Favorites: Handmade Heaven, Enjoy Your Life, Karma, Too Afraid Head Above Water Avril Lavigne I wanted Avril to go to AC stuff during self-titled era and I was excited by the title track to be honest; it’s a very powerful ballad. Such transition is the only one for Avril that made sense to me. However, just as LOVE + FEAR, Head Above Water turned out to be very basic and generic. What made the title track work is it being personal to Avril’s struggle over the years, you really believe her when she sings it. In the meantime, the personality is lacking in almost every other song unfortunately, you can really see it in songs like Tell Me It’s Over or Crush that could’ve been given away to literally any other singer and it would be the same. Aside from the title track, however, Dumb Blonde is actually a very fun TBDTesque Avril bop and Souvenir had that nice carefree Let Go touch, she really should’ve embraced her past for the album to actually work. Favorites: Head Above Water, Dumb Blonde, Souvenir In My Defense Iggy Azealea I… don’t even know why I even bothered listening to it tbh. It's like she didn't even try. Favorites: um… Started, I guess??? ____________ Songs break up with your girlfriend, I’m bored Ariana Grande This song is an absolute stain on the album to me; cringeworthy title, the fact that it’s the closing track when the title track literally exists. It doesn’t offer anything interesting sonically either. ME! Taylor Swift feat. Brandon Urie Can’t wait for this to appear on everyone else’s Dishonorable Mentions lists. The Lord really shouldn’t have competed with Peppa Pig for having the best children song of the year. Raising Hell Kesha feat. Big Freedia Kesha coming back to her party image sounded like a good idea but the lead single to her upcoming High Road LP sounded very dated, noisy and it lacked the fun of Kesha’s early bops.
K$Ellie Posted December 6, 2019 Posted December 6, 2019 Hmm Cuz I Love You was very weak for me, at least it didn't make the list Truth Hurts and the title track are nice tho I mostly agree with you commentary on Melanie but I still quite enjoyed the album Goblin is beautiful the mini was lovely The dishonorable mentions are pretty much on point, I like buwyg,ib but it's very generic and nowhere near the best on the album Haven't heard the 3 albums in full but the singles were very weak Raising Hell is hilariously bad so I kinda like it but it's objectively awful x
DancingShoes Posted December 6, 2019 Posted December 6, 2019 The Me! drag Shook at buwyg appearing here but the rest of the list is very true
TheWayWeWere Posted December 6, 2019 Posted December 6, 2019 I was excited about Natasha's comeback and I actually like Roller Skate, but album and that..era were such a non-event most songs are just okay and forgettable. POS & Strip Me >>> I'm glad for Lizzo's success, but her old songs > her new album y'all better stawp with all that L+F slapping it's not THAT bad, yeah, it's bad comparing to her previous works, but there's many bops here and there HAW...is...something I was sure that self-titled is going to be her worst forever, but then..HAW came out BUWYGIB is nice bop not the best on album, but still Kesha slayed with Rainbow, but yeah RH is not the tea that Big Frida girl ruins everything even more
