Essentials so high!

I didn't listen to Alduous or Cate, I wonder if I would have liked them.

I didn't count Jai Paul's album as a 2019 release but it would have been very very high on my list if I did.  I actually never bothered to listen to the leak before this year :skull:

Ooh girl taste. Lemme try and go through my thoughts on your picks quickly.

Jay Som - TALENT I liked this more than her other album! Hatchie cute. Caroline, TALENT x3. Nuelniffer or whatever... eh didn't care for that record. Weyes Blood, also talent.

I knew you stanned Erika so I'll just leave it at that :-* Angel, talent! Aldous is so high on your list, love it! Knew Cate would be top 10 for you - a great album as well. Bit of a kii seeing Jai Paul on your top listing, but actually I hadn't listened to it until this year (I know, sue me), and it's amazing. As are his newest random singles.

05 // (sandy) alex g - house of sugar

indie folk, neo-psychedelia

7ta8gi8.jpgFKA Alex G has released more albums this decade than i can remember, but I'm pretty sure this is his best work. Alex's songs don't have one specific defining quality to them, but you always know one when you hear it. I like how his songs are full of intricate detail but still have a sort of lovable unfinished quality to them. The tracks on House of Sugar work like vignettes, focusing on people who all seem to be going through something: the guy who just wants to walk away, the guy who lost his friend to fentanyl, the guy who has another guy in his arms. It's not clear how much of it is autobiographical but it doesn't really matter. The sonics of House of Sugar itself are just as varied, with a four song electronic suite in the middle of the album that somehow works really well. House of Sugar is a record where I can't pin down exactly why it's so successful at what it does, but that's part of the charm.  points: walk away, hope, gretel, in my arms

   04 // jessica pratt - quiet signs

contemporary folk, singer-songwriter

vCFAs9T.jpgJessica Pratt does a lot with very little. This decade saw her release albums of spellbinding folk characterised by just her voice, a nylon-string guitar, and a little tape hiss for good measure. Pratt has a way with enchanting melodies and gorgeous fingerpicked chord progressions that makes her music fascinating in spite of its simplicity. This time around, however, Jessica recorded in a studio and invited other musicians to contribute. There are splashes of woodwind and piano throughout Quiet Signs; basically an orchestra for her standards. While the arrangements of songs like Poly Blue and Fare Thee Well are lush and beautiful, with major 7 chords and breezy flutes, this is contrasted by Jessica's voice. Sounding somehow both childlike and akin to a wizened old hag, nobody sings like her. It gives the songs a sense of strangeness that almost matches their gorgeousness.  It's an album that exceeded my expectations and has stayed with me throughout 2019.

points: as the world turns, this time around, aeroplane

    03 // big thief - u.f.o.f

indie folk

u1Ka4VT.jpg2019 was a banner year for folk music, and U.F.OF. sits at the top as the best of them. Adrianne Lenker really caught my eye with 2017's Capacity thanks to her masterful songwriting, her songs vivid character studies full of memorable details and great hooks. This album is her (and their) best work, however. Stitched together with strange otherworldly folk songs about alien encounters and twisted limbs, U.F.O.F. is engaging throughout its 43 minutes. Adrianne's lyrics are as glass-cutting as ever, but enveloped in her wistful melodies they fall as soft as leaves. Songs like these are stories, and new details emerge with every listen, which I love. While U.F.O.F. has a weightless, ethereal quality to it, the album has heavier moments too: Contact and Jenni are two of the best slowcore songs this side of 1998 and show that the band can pull of as many styles as they want. More than maybe any act on this list I'm excited to see where Big Thief go next after this year. Though let's be honest, we probably won't be waiting very long.

points: contact, ufof, orange, betsy, jenni

   02 // fka twigs - magdalene

  art pop, glitch pop

sioItcL.jpgIf FKA twigs - and for a while that was a big if - was gonna release a second album, I really thought it would be at least kind of a sophomore slump. LP1 was one of the defining debut albums of the decade, very near perfect, and very hard to live up to. But when twigs disappeared for those years she wasn't messing around, MAGDALENE is everything I could want from a follow up, a great album and one that shows clear growth. Almost like her vision of a singer/songwriter album, MAGDALENE takes piano ballads and splinters them among forward-thinking beats and ghostly ambience. The songs are often messy and unpredictable, full of weird left turns and dozens of layers of production detail. And I like that! I feel like it's her way of getting across the ambivalence and rollercoaster of emotions that come with a break up, without being too literal about it. Most of all the songs are all just.. really good. Every track has great vocals, production, even the lyrics have charm to them. Any other year this would have a good shot at #1 but...

points: home with you, mary magdalene, fallen alien, daybed, cellophane

01 // lana del rey - norman ****ing rockwell!

singer/songwriter, art pop

QwDoDWo.jpgThe easiest aoty choice I've ever had to make. I've been a fan of Lana for 8 years now, probably almost to the day - at the end of 2011 I happened upon the Born to Die video and haven't looked back since. NFR! is the kind of album that makes following an artist for so long so rewarding. The most Lana of Lana albums: it opens with the lines "goddamn manchild, you ****ed me so good I almost said 'I love you'", there's a 10 minute  psych epic in Venice Bitch, there's a song literally called California. But it's an album she could have only made after really honing her songwriting over the decade. On NFR! I feel like her lyricism finally matches up to her one-of-a-kind melodic skill. Songs like Bartender and Hope are such nuanced and astute reflections about her life that catch me off guard with every listen. And we have to give credit to Jack too. Some (not me!) were skeptical of his working with Lana but he really delivered some of his best work here. He colours the songs just enough to keep them interesting without overshadowing Lana's lyrics. I don't wish to be part of the narrative that this is 'her first great album', but it's hard to deny this is her most accomplished work yet, even if Ultraviolence will always be my personal favourite. Lana ending the decade hailed as a hugely influential artist with a massively acclaimed, AOTY nominated record is a moment most pleasing to me in her career. But, more importantly, NFR! is an album that has had a profound impact on me, and one that I'll be listening to through the next decade and beyond.  points: mariners apartment complex, venice bitch, love song, the greatest, bartender

Top 2 doesn't surprise me at all, shoulda switched them though :cm:

Alex G's album wasn't amazing for me but I liked it way more than his last so props for improvement.

Magdalene is not an album; it’s a mountain. It’s an immense, granite form aggressively rising from volcanic soil. It questions everything: sound, elegance, bluntness, how far one can go. It’s pure hubris, mixing politics with extreme intimacy, braggadocio with immense vulnerability. I always come back to it whenever I want to know what courage is.

Great countdown and I had fun following it. Love that top 2 especially xx hope you have a wonderful life.
