Ewan Chaos Posted December 8, 2019 Posted December 8, 2019 I have a feeling UFOF is your top album... you picked the correct one to be placed higher! YAS Natasha talent! Loving the plug for your rym too nnnn Great Charli write-up, I totally agree. A lot of why I like it so much tbh is the fact that I saw her live pretty soon after and all of those songs sounded phenomenal live.
theblackestday Posted December 8, 2019 Posted December 8, 2019 all of these albums are good to great! always enjoy your writeups btw
Vilppu Posted December 8, 2019 Posted December 8, 2019 Generally agree with the thoughts on Charli though I probably wouldn't put it on any list, I'm physically unable to listen to anything from tracks 4-9 I might even like Sucker more at this point rip I think Tinashe is a lie... Sharon isn't however

ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 9, 2019 ATRL Moderator Posted December 9, 2019 That Sharon album was completely forgotten by the sands of time for me Glad someone remembered it. I thought Lost girls was going to be better based on the singles we got :( Charli is great obviously, and Songs for You is good even if it lacks standouts.
Eeveelution Posted December 9, 2019 Author Posted December 9, 2019 (edited) 20 // shura - forevher synthpop, sophisti-pop I think what might have pushed Forevher into the top 20 over the over some of the others is how well it works as an album. Unshakably romantic, cloying even, Shura sustains a consistent mood across the record's 10 slow jams, each track complimenting the others perfectly. You've heard plenty of albums written about falling in love, but Shura's songwriting talent and the syrupy retro-soul production make Forevher a cut above most of them. It doesn't really have the immediate bops from Nothing's Real (Religion comes close), but Shura definitely beat the sophomore slump with this one and really progressed her sound too. points: religion, control, skyline be mine 19 // vampire weekend - father of the bride indie pop Coming back after six years, losing a key member, and it being 18 tracks long had me skeptical about Father of the Bride, but obviously I had nothing to worry about. Vampire Weekend are more or less the same as ever and the album is full of catchy indie pop hooks and semi-questionable appropriation bops. There is growth though, i can't say that Sympathy for example sounds anything like their older songs, or any other song this year actually... And while I always stanned Ezra's pretentious lyrics, I like the more direct approach he took here, one of the best songwriters we have honestly. Maybe the album could be a bit shorter but for 18 songs the quality batting average is pretty great, so I don't really have any complaints. points: unbearably white, rich man, sympathy, flower moon 18 // solange - when i get home neo soul, art pop, alt-r&b I've always thought of When I Get Home as a pretty flawed album: it's repetitive, underwritten, and full of half-songs that really could have been fleshed out and developed further. But when i put it on I kinda forget all of that, for whatever reason it just works. There were no singles for When I Get Home and it's clearly a record designed with the album experience in mind - there aren't any Cranes in the Sky-type moments on here. Instead, Solange's repetitious verses and aimless song structures blend together to create something greater than the sum of their parts. Obviously sis knew what she was doing and while it's no A Seat at the Table (more on that later), it's not an album to write off either. points: down with the clique, way to the show, almeda, 17 // marika hackman - any human friend indie rock Marika Hackman's I'm Not Your Man was one of my favourite (and one of the most underrated) albums of 2017, so I was was excited to see where she'd go next. Any Human Friend represents another evolution for the singer-songwriter, and it's her boldest and most accessible album yet. Where Shura's Forevher was romantic and sentimental, this album's impact lies in how blunt, sexual and just, well, horny it is. And I love that for her! This album does a great job at balancing catchy hook-driven songs with more sombre moments, which makes it much more memorable than a lot of indie rock I've heard lately. Marika is also a great songwriter, and while I preferred the more abstract lyricism from her last album, some lines really jump out: "in the eyes of patriarchal law, I'll die a virgin" is a good one. points: the one, blow, hand solo, hold on 16 // chelsea wolfe - birth of violence singer/songwriter, dark folk Chelsea Wolfe was always someone who I kinda liked but had never really listened to that much, but this year I really fell in love with her music. Unpopular opinion maybe but I definitely gravitate more toward her folkier work, so I think this is one of her best albums yet. I love how Birth of Violence is a very simple folk album, but it still retains the doomy elements of her past few metal-leaning releases: It's in the maelstrom of guitar distortion that builds throughout Little Grave, and in the sinister string arrangements throughout. Most of all, the simplicity of the songs allow Chelsea to really show off her vocals. Moments like Highway's outro remind me why I listen to singers, and rarely listen to people who cannot sing. points: deranged for rock & roll, be all things, little grave, highway Edited December 9, 2019 by Eeveelution
smholiv Posted December 9, 2019 Posted December 9, 2019 When I Get Home was such an incredible album, i really agree with your interpretation that it is meant to be experienced fully. i think a lot of heart went into that album and it comes across so well in each of the tracks. for me it felt like a step up from her last album, but both were consistently amazing.
Remmy Posted December 9, 2019 Posted December 9, 2019 forevher 2 of the slower songs in the middle kinda pale in comparison to the rest of the tracklist, tommy grew on me plenty at least. I actually prefer this over Nothing's Real, mainly because I hate how NR ends.

Ewan Chaos Posted December 10, 2019 Posted December 10, 2019 SO TRUE at Shura, what a sweet, sweet album. Yah Father of the Bride is too long admittedly, but I agree that I think the more direct songwriting is what makes it still a captivating record. Wish I felt the same way as you do with Solange's record I mean outside of the first sentence, that's like all I think about it. Marika, yes a cute album indeed! So glad I gave it a listen. Chelsea... overrated is all I'll say.
ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 10, 2019 ATRL Moderator Posted December 10, 2019 Surprised Shura was that good at slow jams tbh... It's not an easy sound to pull off Cute that you bothered to listen to FOTB. WIGH deserved higher.
TheWayWeWere Posted December 10, 2019 Posted December 10, 2019 Forevher nice to see Shura, I used to love that album even more than NR, but it aged kinda bad for me When I Get Home is definition of a grower for me, it's nowhere close to ASAT, but it SLAYS
Lazuli Posted December 10, 2019 Posted December 10, 2019 forevher, father of the bride, when i get home nothing's real is superior but shura still delivered! same with vw tbh
K$Ellie Posted December 10, 2019 Posted December 10, 2019 Solange kinda bores me, I listened to a few songs off WIGH but they didn't do anything for me forevher was really cute, religion was deff my fave but I liked side effects and the stage a lot too

Chelsea pretty good but I also prefer her more metal side by a lot

Body Electrician Posted December 11, 2019 Posted December 11, 2019 FOTB meh.. they did some things I guess WIGH literally one long interlude and I personally don’t get the acclaim.. ASATT >>> I liked Any Human Friend but like a lot of releases didn’t pay much attention to it after release week. Some great songs but I think it lacked something overall. Blow is great though Listened to Chelsea’s singles but never got round to the actual album didn’t excite me much Good picks so far perched for top 10
