Eeveelution Posted December 8, 2019 Author Posted December 8, 2019 (edited) 25 // big thief - two hands indie folk Indie Rock is dead, but thankfully Big Thief are alive and breathing, releasing not one but two (2) great albums in 2019. Certain artists may be notoriously bad at defining their own work, but i really think these guys hit the nail on the head when they described Two Hands as the "earth twin" to U.F.O.F.'s "air twin". The quartet's second album of 2019 is all ramshackle guitar solos and rough-around-the edges live takes, sounding very much like the desert it was recorded in. As ever though, Adrianne's lyrics are the highlight for me, particularly Not wherein she tries to define something that is not "the hunger revealing, nor the ricochet in the cave" among other things. Wolf meanwhile, has one her finest fingerstyle guitar arrangements and what is unarguably the best howling indie folk has ever seen. points: not, wolf 24 // sharon van etten - remind me tomorrow indie pop, synthpop Back in January I remember calling this "2019's first great album", and while the year has brought a fair amount of better albums, Remind Me Tomorrow still holds up as a pretty damn solid work. After about four albums of piano-and-guitar balladry, Sharon decided to go for a more electronic direction this time around. Maybe not the most original move, but i can't deny the synth design here gives her music a new lease of life. The sonic pallet here is a bright and messy as the cover would suggest with new wave bangers, spooky ambient pop ballads and even a noisy psychedelic electro-expedition in Hands (her best song). As ever though, it's Sharon's vocals that elevate the music here, and she really sells the hell out of her straightforward arrangements and conversational lyrics. points: memorial day, comeback kid, jupiter 4, hands 23 // bat for lashes - lost girls synthpop, art pop After 2016's The Bride, Natasha Khan returns with another concept album, albeit much more lighter this time around (nobody dies... i think?). I think she had a lot of fun making this and I like how it balances the campy 80s aesthetic while still having some classic art pop characteristics about it. Not her best album of course, but an enjoyable listen and another worthwhile addition to her discography. Click here for my critically acclaimed front-page rym review of Lost Girls if you wanna see some more thoughts I had about it. points: feel for you, jasmine, so good 22 // charli xcx - charli bubblegum bass, electropop i went back and forth in including Charli: does an album so wildly inconsistent deserve to be considered the best of anything? Probably not, but I'm putting it here because 1) I played the **** out of it for a good two weeks and 2) the highs here just about make up for a few duds. If Charli does one thing well, it's balancing more accessible, gp friendly songs with the weird Pop 2 style pots-and-pans bangers we all know and love. Though the safer moments result in some of her weakest songs yet (looking at you White Mercedes), the album does a good job at being catchy and experimental in equal measure and makes for one of the most fun pop albums of 2019. points: next level charli, i don't wanna know, shake it, 2099 21 // tinashe - songs for you alternative r&b Tinashe is someone who I will always root for, even when she isn't doing so well. Thankfully, Nashe has really bounced back after last year's Joyride fiasco, releasing what is arguably her most consistent album yet. Tinashe plays to her strengths here by delivering synthy chillbops and trap bangers in equal measure.I also think she deserves credit for some experimentation, as on the two part bop Know Better or the weird, psychedelic outro of So Much Better. Most of all, I'm happy that Tinashe seems to be in a much better place, and making better music for it. points: life's too short, hopscotch, story of us Edited December 8, 2019 by Eeveelution
World Eater Posted December 8, 2019 Posted December 8, 2019 Big Tit, Sharon and Charli I feel like Natasha could have gone a few steps further with Lost Gals, it feels sort of empty at times 45 minutes ago, Eeveelution said: Indie Rock is dead I blame St. Vincent and Selena's-Kidney for that
prézli Posted December 8, 2019 Posted December 8, 2019 Yes, Tinashe Thanks for participating in the album survivor. Your heart is pure gold.
SLIME Posted December 8, 2019 Posted December 8, 2019 i hate Wh*te Mercedes too but idt that's anywhere near enough to disqualify the album from being praise-worthy. Rest of it is good to great. Glad u enjoyed too. Big Thief is ok to me, I think I owe them a little bit more of a chance. And oops! Haven't listened to Tinashe yet! This why I don't feel qualified to do much of an albums list...
TheWayWeWere Posted December 8, 2019 Posted December 8, 2019 XCX World & Pop 2 > Charli, but she still was able to make great record tho SFY was surprisingly great I even enjoyed Joyride mostly, but this one is pretty amazing
Body Electrician Posted December 8, 2019 Posted December 8, 2019 Ahhh a lot of talent the Wolf praise and RMT and Lost Girls I agree that Charli is wildly inconsistent but it does have major highs (Gone, Silver Cross, 2099) that make it a worthwhile listen. Still haven't listened to Songs for You
