KasioKas Posted December 30, 2019 Author Posted December 30, 2019 10. In My Bed - Sabrina Carpenter This is the perfect song for introverts. It's one of the most relatable songs i've heard all year! I agree with every lyric, it all describes me perfectly . The chorus is catchy as hell and a total ear-worm, the instrumental progresses nicely from intro to chorus to 2nd verse, it's honestly so easy to forget on replay . Sabrina has a hit here, it's one of my most played song of the year!, the chorus and bridge are the best parts - that bridge where the harmonies come in before the beat drops again and back into the chorus, ugh it's the perfect pop song. This is where Sabrina excels and i'm honestly not surprised she snuck her way into my top 10 AGAIN this year. The final chorus where she ad libs "i'm still in my bed" over the chorus as the instrumental dances along, brilliant. 9. Icy - Kim Petras So there are typical break-up songs..., and then there are BAD*SS "GET F*CK OUT OF MY LIFE" break-up songs. You know the ones, a la Kelly Clarkson, You'll Never Know - Ariana, High Heels - Jojo, and the song ranked number 8 below!! These are my FAVOURITE types of songs, they can only be song by real singers, BELTING their heart out with passion and emotion and ANGER. It's EXCELLENT. Kim holds NOTHING back here and it feels like ice daggers are being stabbed into the accuser everytime she screams the chorus "NOW I GOT AN ICE. COLD. HEEEAARRTTTT"and can we talk about that instrumental beat!? The way the song starts like a typical sad song before the beat bursts in?? Listen, with premium headphones it sounds SO GOOD This is pop at it's best and should have been a huge top 40 hit for her .THAT FINAL CHORUS!???? Perfect progression, nice ad libs, and those high notes This is the perfect song for any kind of breakup, and way too good for a debut album. 8. The One - Betty Who Here's the other BAD*SS break-up song, just as scathing, but more along the lines of being better off without the ex, with great lyrics like "If I'm not the one, good luck finding something better" Just the way the song starts tells you it's not one to dismiss. It's immediate, no flirting - just straight to the beat and singing. The instrumental remains loud and attention-seeking while she sets the stage with the 1st verse and bridge before the chorus drops. THIS CHORUS IS GOLD It's so F*CKING SASSY and DISMISSIVE - it reminded me immediately of Jojo's High Heels. Once the song established it's bad*ssery it then flows into the even more scalding 2nd verse "You talk so tough, sit down, grow up, I don't need this foolishness around me, 'Cause it's my house, my life, and you kill my vibe, Now I know I'll never make you happy" BITCH Can you imagine screaming this song at someone you hate. The bridge slows things down ever so slightly before she decides to just GO OFF vocally on the final chorus. THIS WAS ON REPEAT ALL. YEAR. LONG. I was GAGGED the first time I heard this! Her album wasn't the best, but this song is EXCELLENT. I wish this would have been played in clubs, it's the ultimate f*ck you song this year. ughhhhhhhhhhhhh 7. How Do You Sleep? - Sam Smith After hearing Sam's collab on 'Dancing W/A Stranger' I was scared to hear this release because I thought he couldn't top it... he proved me so wrong The cool intro and beautiful instrumental reminiscent of 'The Boy is Mine' progressing into a different beat that let's you know it's not a ballad as Sam begins his story telling. Then Sam's voice swells and you begin really anticipating a beat drop at the chorus. You're almost let down when it doesn't come at first... and then... "Tell me how do you..." beat drop, instrumental change, the song is now definitely an up-tempo and you're fully sucked in. By the second chorus you can't help but dance along. The lyrics are accusatory and you can hear the sorrow in Sam's voice as he sings. The instrumental and Sam's voice makes this song though! THEN, the music video dropped and we were all GAGGED Never before has Sam seemed so free, so so happy, so skinny and SO sexy I- It's VERY apparent that this new era is a more outspoken, happier Sam and i'm SOOOO thrilled to see it reflected in his music, it's some of his BEST work and this is easily one of his best songs ever! 6. Gimme - Banks This song stuck out to me more than any other on the album, it's easily the biggest bop but most notable was the instrumental and lyrics. The instrumental starts well, but when the chorus hits, it takes on a new form, it's static-y in a weird but oddly pleasing way. It completely switches up. The chorus is explosive and another ear-worm that's really easy to sing/dance along to. It's extremely addictive, I think that's why I love it so much, it's mature and addictive AF, and was on repeat all year! That + the lyrics - sexy, demanding, almost innocent but in a flirty way "Gimme, gimme, what I want, what I deserve" . It could be mistaken as just another pop song but it's so much more than that, it's placed perfectly on the album as the sexier, enticing edge that the album needs, and really reflects on the type of person Banks is in a relationship/as a lover. 5. Stand Up (from Harriet) - Cynthia Erivo So I really discovered Cynthia this year after she amazed me on the TERRELL show and I needed to find out what original music she had out. I followed her on Spotify and shortly thereafter she released this... this MAMMOTH of a song. Before all else, I want to comment on the key-change. WHAT. THE. F*CK!?? The emotion of this song builds, ever increasing from beginning to end. What makes this song is the emotion, lyrics and vocal, but emotion overpowers ALL. Honestly you can tell IMMEDIATELY that she put her heart and soul into this recording. She's belting and screaming and it immediately touches something inside of you. The lyrics are haunting - literally. It tells the story of Harriet BRILLIANTLY and its build from a slow start to the explosive end is just perfect story telling. Only certain singers can pull this off like she has, and she did so perfectly. Vocally.. THE KEY CHANGE . The high notes The falsetto The choir The man in that choir in the background with the perfect lower-voice to complement hers THE KEY CHANGE The soft outro Cynthia you have earned my utmost respect. 4. Do Me - Kim Petras Here she is again, this time with the sexiest, most daring song i've heard from a pop girl in a long time. No filters. "Do me, do me, do me like that, Hurt me so good, make me wanna be bad, Give it to me, to me like that, Feels so good, got me coming right back" I love how unapologetically dirty this song is!, Since Rihanna's left, noone is willing to be this sexy and dirty in pop music because they fear losing the younger demographic. F*ck that. (only rap girls are willing to go there)"And I love when you make me come back to back And my legs are shakin', nobody does it like that" The instrumental is nothing special, it takes a backseat to her vocals - but the lyrics and her voice make this one of the best pop songs i've heard this year. That one time where she goes "DO IT TO MEEE" in the high note YES go off!! I love that she has no problem showing off her vocal ability and it's SO GOOD. The final chorus is PERFECT It's the best part - it's an amazing climax - ad libs, high notes - she screaming, craving, demanding - and its such a turn on. Spoiler 3. bloodline - Ariana Grande A. BOP. This is my most played song of the year. Bar none. Nothing came close. This is the most addictive song I have ever heard since Demi's Heart Attack many years ago. The instrumental is unforgiving, the lyrics are sexy and dismissive and intoxing. BUT THE BEST PART OF THIS SONG????? "Love me, love me, baby, Are you down? Can you let me know? Love me, thank you, leave me, Put it down, then it's time to go Get it like you love me, But you don't, boy, it's just for show Take it or leave it, you gotta take it or leave it, like uh uh uh!" BIIIIIIII*CH I love this song SO F*CKING MUCH. THIS is perfect pop music. She even included a great bridge in the end AND high notes. Sassy and GROWN Ariana is the best Ariana. It's not a love song, it's not a break up song, it's one night, then f*ck off. YASSS The Grindr gays must be LIVING Spoiler 2. Language - Tori Kelly DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR AND LISTEN TO THIS SONG. Just the intro at least, just the first 55 seconds. That's all I ask. This woman is an EXPERT. I AM DISGUSTED that she isn't getting more credit for her incredible vocal ability , the control she has over her voice continues to astound me everytime she opens her mouth. But this right here? This is Tori's BEST song vocally speaking that she's ever recorded. Nothing comes close . On an otherwise slow album, this soars above all else. She walked into the studio and decided "You know what? Let's see what this voice can really do. Let's just remove all restraint and just go where the wind takes me" IT. IS. SPECTACULAR. Runs and high notes aplenty. The lyrics are brilliant, she's insisting to her lover that she means no harm, SCREAMING at him to give her the chance to learn his language, to get closer to him. At times she almost sounds defeated, but then assures him she just wants to learn, trying her best to sound convincing. It's effortless. I hate her for making this song seem effortless. When I heard this live, she barely broke a sweat. She hit every note. Every single one. I couldn't help but smile at her through the whole thing like a proud parent. I know she isn't chasing hits and isn't after massive stardom, but dammit man this should have been heard and streamed by millions. It will forever piss me off that this didn't smash, and I will continue to play it for everyone I know to show them what real singers can do, because this is it. SPECTACULAR. Spoiler MY #1 SONG OF 2019 Spoiler Spoiler 1. imagine - Ariana Grande You're a fool if you disregard this song as anything less than top 5 on this album, but in my humble opinion, it stands undefeated as #1. This is it, this is Ariana at her absolute best. Vocals aside for just one second... The emotion that this song has, hit me like a ton of bricks. This girl is one of the biggest artists of the year and yet in this song, she sounds as intimate as ever. She's speaking to one person in particular, imagine a world where we were without all of this, a quieter world without the outside distractions. In verses, she dreams up the scenarios, and longingly belts "Imagine a world like that..." I thought of it as sad initially, fame eats at you slowly and this song shows the side not many want to see when they chase it. There's such clear sadness in her voice, she's extremely emotive here, more than most of the rest of the album (not quite as much as ghostin' though) as she sings the verses, deeply craving the impossible The emotion is a large part of why this song hit me so hard. Then there's the vocals... The chorus hits and she's belting to the stars. That is the greatest climax I've heard in a song in years. The ever increasing belts, the longing, desperately reaching out for that unattainable world. Grasping at air, screaming for it, taunting the listener over and over with "Can You?" , and then... the whistle :jonny2::jonny2::jonny2::jonny2: It took me a second to pick my jaw up from the floor when I first heard it, Ariana hasn't done that in years, and it was COMPLETELY UNEXPECTED - but, it drives home that emotion, how far she's willing to go for what she seeks. (I also love that she shut all the haters up by immediately calling her friend Jimmy & performing it LIVE with the whistle there too ) The heavy beat in the background is loud but simple, not to take any attention away from Ariana, from the beginning to the very end. Finally, that outro, after the greatest climax in pop music in 2019, is soft... defeated... a steady "Imagine..." repeated over and over. At the end she's done, has she given up or is she optimistic? Maybe that's up to you to decide. I can't get enough of this song. With every new album this girl finds a new way to leave me surprise me
