Ewan Chaos Posted December 13, 2019 Author Posted December 13, 2019 Another update! Also **** Tories and Tory voters! Letter: G Top Artist: Gavin Turek Come ooooooon queen, I need a full album, PUHLEEEEAASSEEEEEE! She only released 2 singles this year so my write-up should be pretty quick, but if you haven’t given her a listen before you have to at least check out her Good Look For You EP from 2017. So good! Definitely my top pick of the two singles would be Elevator. I think the progression of the song is so interesting, in the way that the track stays pretty same-tempo and then breaks down to the fuzzy production after the first chorus. Of course, the breakdown at the end is awesome too. I think the lyrics are really cute and Gavin’s voice matches perfectly. Also, fun fact for all the Shura fans in all these Best Ofs, she co-wrote on the song! 2AM is also a great track, leans a bit more on the funky side for Gavin and her voice sounds so dope. The “Yeah yeah yeah” refrain is a great bit too - very fun chanting and really peaks at the end of the song when the volume turns UP. PS: The Elevator video is what my avi is from Runner-Up: Greensky Bluegrass This is an underrated bluegrass record! It’s also one of the first albums I listened to this year and some of the songs still have good holding power as the year is closing. It’s an album that could do with like… a tiny bit of trimming, but it is really solid! Do Harm is my favorite, probably just because it’s the most catchy and fun of the songs on the album. Cute lyrical content too. My favorite bits are the “So puuuuuuut meeeeeee in my place” about 2 minutes in, and also the break at the end of the song when he goes “When I leave all I do is… harm.” Courage for the Road was the first song I heard and… yes it’s 9 minutes long, but honestly it is a fantastic full 9 minutes. It is that barnyard boogie track. Collateral Damage is probably my favorite of the “slower” songs. And then I also enjoy It’s Not Mine Anymore and What You Need. Additional Musicians Under this Letter: *bolded artists/songs are my recommendations* Artist Loves It She's a Cute Girl It's a No From Me Notes Gallant Panasonic Sleep On It, Sharpest Edges, Crimes Dude had a weird career after Ology. This ain't as good as Ology by far, but it's nice, especially Panasonic Gary Clark Jr. The Guitar Man This Land, I Walk Alone, Feelin' Like a Million, Feed the Babies This was a recent listen and it's great! Georgia About Work The Dancefloor Loved her since she was in that HONNE song Gesaffelstein Blast Off (feat. Pharrell Williams) Lost in the Fire (holy **** this is probably my least fave song of the year) **** album, good song. Glass Animals Tokyo Drifting (with Denzel Curry) Fun song! Unexpected. GoldLink More (feat. Lola Rae) Maniac, Zulu Screams, U Say One of my fave rap albums of the year, I think. Which is awk given... Grace Potter Every Heartbeat On My Way, Love is Love, Desire, Daylight Recent listen! A cute one, more interesting than her debut solo record Grimes My Name is Dark So Heavy I Might as Well be a Tesla Truck Alright Ms. Musky, I'm waiting until the album to listen much to the singles. Gruff Rhys Annedd i'm Danedd - Muzi Remix A short and cool little album! Love the instruments. Also called Pang, LOL Gryffin OMG (with Carly Rae Jepsen) If I Left the World Album was mostly meh, even the Marina song was meh, but I love OMG!

Lazuli Posted December 13, 2019 Posted December 13, 2019 Quote So Heavy I Might as Well be a Tesla Truck but yes we've been waiting so long for the album the glass animals song was cute i guess!

TRF. Posted December 13, 2019 Posted December 13, 2019 Georgia's About Work the Dancefloor is truly fantastic
theblackestday Posted December 13, 2019 Posted December 13, 2019 G's didn't really do it this year for me now that you made me think about it !
K$Ellie Posted December 13, 2019 Posted December 13, 2019 Grimes kinda served this year next year, the album slaps a bit and the singles aren't even my faves About Work the Dancefloor getting a shoutout that Gesaffelstein song with The Weeknd was so reductive
potent Posted December 13, 2019 Posted December 13, 2019 Lost in the Fire is a decent bop, but yeah getting kind of generic and repetitive, I wish I had gotten into Blast Off sooner. Foals are great, I didn't listen to the second half of their album but the first half had some great songs and In Degrees will surely be high on my list
ATRL Moderator Tsareena Posted December 13, 2019 ATRL Moderator Posted December 13, 2019 Elevator is that bitch and I need Gavin Turek to release an album already
Pink Matter Posted December 14, 2019 Posted December 14, 2019 F: surprised you weren't messing with LP1 but glad MAGDALENE, I especially agree with the songwriting. Twas quite gripping ; DHL is a knock but I agree I need him to just drop the whole album. G: Didn't know Gaven Turek released a new song I'll make sure to check that out. I also liked the GoldLink album (there's a bunch of tracks on there that I go back to). After Gentleman, Gallant kinda fell off I haven't had the urge to check out his new releases but I'll check out the song you recommended.
Ewan Chaos Posted December 14, 2019 Author Posted December 14, 2019 OKAY really need to just keep trying to pump out as many letters as possible before this month gets way too busy... well it already has kii. Letter: H Top Artist: HAIM Let me preface this by saying that I still think that their album from 2017 was kiiiiinda underrated! Obviously not as good as the debut, but it had absolutely incredible songs like You Never Knew, Ready For You, Want You Back, Nothing’s Wrong, etc… I totally get the hate, but to act like the entire thing was bad is just WRONG. However, these 3 singles this year are all incredible, which makes me really happy. I do wish it was already leading to a full release since I kinda hate singles-without-albums-tied-to-them singles. Oh well. After a loooooong deliberation with myself, I’ve decided that I like Hallelujah the best, just barely. I love when all 3 sisters get separate singing parts in HAIM songs, as rare as it is, and I appreciate it even more because each verse is clearly written by the sister singing it. The concern here would be that it’s a bit disjointed, but it all fits really well into the umbrella of the full song’s theme. Alana’s part makes me wanna cry every time. For a while, Summer Girl was my favorite but it only just slightly slid down my ranking (maybe because it ain’t summer no more). Great “sample” use and I think the song shows that you don’t need to have bombast to be a good song. Cute lyrics/background as well. Now I’m In It is the big bop of all 3, so I imagine that’s the one people are stanning the most. I really like it too, but I just find the other 2 tracks to have more character, and be more interesting/unique for the band. Looking forward to more fun from them next year! When I saw them live in 2018 that may have been the drunkest I’ve been at a concert and it was outdoors and pouring lmao. So intense. And Lizzo opened! Runner-Up: Hozier This is where my basic music tastes come sliding out a bit! Okay, yes, this album was quite a step down from the self-titled that came out in 2014, BUT… I saw him live and that made me like a lot more songs. And my roommate is literally OBSESSED with this album so she always enjoys when I play it. My favorite track is the obvious standout single Almost (Sweet Music). The production is my favorite aspect and the melody (in the chorus) is really sweet. I think the best part of the song is the bridge going “I wouldn’t know where” with the amazing backing vocals. It’s great live too. Nobody is a total bop and really good too. The live version was kinda weird, but still fun. No Plan is a great one as well, and I also enjoy As It Was and Movement. Most of that EP from last year was good too. I’d say Shrike is my favorite from it and it’s so Irish. Additional Musicians Under this Letter: *bolded artists/songs are my recommendations* Artist Loves It She's a Cute Girl It's a No From Me Notes half-alive arrow ice cold (KIMBRA), ok ok?, maybe, pure gold I liked this album! Hannah Diamond The Ending Concrete Angel, Shy, Love Goes On, Invisible TRUE I never really listened to her music before, sorry to her stans for the lack of new songs. Really good album tho! Harry Styles Cherry Sunflower Vol 6, Golden, Watermelon Sugar Of course, I only listened to this today so I don't have strong opinions yet. Good so far! Hatchie Without A Blush Stay With Me, Not That Kind, Obsessed, Secret A little overrated! Helado Negro Sabana de luz Never really went back to it but it's good Highasakite Revolution They'll never top their 2014 album, but I love them still Highly Suspect 16 Okay album... yeah it's okay. Hikaru Utada Face My Fears - English Version Queen of KH HOLYCHILD Number One Carmelo, Over You Didn't expect this to even come out. I like it! Hot Chip Echo Melody of Love Pretty good! The Highwomen If She Ever Leaves Me Highwomen, Loose Change, Redesigning Women Country lass talent!

Ewan Chaos Posted December 14, 2019 Author Posted December 14, 2019 Actually, the letter I will be quick so lemme just knock that out. Letter: I Top Artist: Ingrid Michaelson Honestly, I wouldn’t even say she was a top artist for me for the year, but there wasn’t much other option for this letter lmao. The album’s a cute concept, the fact that it follows the Stranger Things show. My favorite track is Missing You because it’s a fun synth-pop track. You know… I never really expected Ingrid to come up with these kinds of bops because I associate her with the Girls Chase Boys sound (a great song btw). Other good picks would be Jealous (she sounds great) and Hey Kid. Alright that about wraps that up. Runner-Up: ionnalee Let’s just say… the selections for “I” this year were pretty slim. Sorry ionnalee stans! I mean… she has her legacy with her immymywhothe****ami so whatever, but… yeah. Some Body would be the best track for me. I also have to give Matters a shout-out because Zola Jesus, baby. Additional Musicians Under this Letter: *bolded artists/songs are my recommendations* n/a
