iHype. Posted September 4, 2019 Posted September 4, 2019 A countdown of the top 50 most dominant album artists from 1993-2018 in United States. How It Was Compiled This was compiled by using the top 60 selling albums every year (Soundscan) from 1993-2018. The album sales were then converted to a point system. An album selling 1,000,000 copies in a year where 50 albums sold higher ofcourse isn't dominant in its time as selling 1,000,000 in a year where 3 other albums sold higher. Thus each year had a multiplier for points, the multiplier was based on what the #60-selling album sold each year. Thus if one year the #60-selling album sold 500,000 and another year the #60-selling album sold 250,000 the first year would have their sales multiplied under an index of 1.0 compared to 2.0 with the latter. Pure sales are used for 1993-2014, equivalent album units for 2015-2018. The multiplier per year: #60 Selling Album Index 1993 1,000,000~ 1.43 1994 1,200,000~ 1.19 1995 1,100,000~ 1.30 1996 1,000,000~ 1.43 1997 1,200,000~ 1.19 1998 1,200,000~ 1.19 1999 1,300,000~ 1.10 2000 1,300,000~ 1.10 2001 1,430,000 1.00 2002 1,028,000 1.39 2003 1,102,000 1.30 2004 1,062,000 1.35 2005 895,000 1.60 2006 875,000 1.63 2007 737,000 1.94 2008 634,000 2.26 2009 519,000 2.76 2010 458,000 3.12 2011 412,000 3.47 2012 426,000 3.36 2013 407,000 3.51 2014 317,000 4.51 2015 434,000 3.29 2016 451,000 3.17 2017 473,000 3.02 2018 562,000 2.54 Rankings 1. They're pretty similar, which is why they're in similar range. Maroon 5 being higher than them is an even bigger shock. However it simply comes down to longevity being a winner. Maroon 5 have been moderately successful for like 15 years. The other bands were huge for 3~ years then rapidly declined. Backstreet Boys & Nickelback are above all of them though
