Solarie - Avril Lavigne

Spoiler

JUVENILE VS MATURE

5616e40270289_362402b.jpg

06.jpg

Avril Lavigne had not only grown up but also kept drastically changing her music style. Even as she has matured, she still shows that age is just a number and that she still has time for fun, more juvenile experiences along the way.

What the Hell is about her having fun without any care in the world, as the lyrics say - "I can't stop cause I'm having too much fun" - She can't because she doesn't want to stop.
"All my life I've been good,
But now whoa, I'm thinking what the hell
All I want is to mess around
And I don't really care about
If you love me
If you hate me".
Sonically, What the Hell is an up-beat track with a catchy beat and melody. Even though Avril has grown up, she still wanted to express the youthful, playful side of her, and that definitely comes across in the sonics of this song.

Give You What You Like, on the other hand, deals with heavy subjects, such as alcohol, sex, depression and drugs.
"Please wrap your drunken arms around me
And I'll let you call me yours tonight
'Cause slightly broken's just what I need
And if you give me what I want
Then I'll give you what you like"
"Emotions aren't that hard to borrow
When was the word you never learned
And in a room of empty bottles"
"I'll give you one last chance to hold me
If you give me one last cigarette"
Sonically it's also very different side of Avril, showing her mature, vulnerable and independent side. The adult themes are wrapped in a much more dramatic sound, sure to connect to a different audience than What the Hell.

Picture wise on the first picture we have Avril giving zero ****s (xDDD) and having fun, essentially showing her juvenile side just like What the Hell did, while the on the second picture she serves glam and old Hollywood style, looking like a very mature, beautiful and confident young woman that she is.

kiiwii - Katy Perry

Spoiler

Photos:

Teenage-Dream-photo-shoot-HQ-katy-perry-

A pop of color galore from her outfit, wig, and makeup is the immediate takeaway from this image. With her hand on her hip accentuating her curves, the pose is very telling in trying to showcase her body. The immense color draws attention to her and gives the impression of a very manufactured look.

Katy-Perry-Prism-Album-Photoshoot-2013-0

This shot takes a much more subtle approach. Relying on none of the extravagant aspects in the previous picture, we see Katy don a more natural look. Her pose is laidback and relaxed with her foot propped up on the handlebars.

Songs:

The lyrics of “Lost” on Katy’s rock-influenced pop record ‘One of the Boys’ shows Katy feeling hopeless and isolated. Written about the time she moved to LA and before she signed onto a record label, we are able to see the image of Katy who is wrapped up in senseless partying with no real goal in sight while in an environment of chaos that she compares to an “eye of a hurricane.”

In “Roar”, all of that is no longer seen, including Katy’s respectable songwriting skills. Aided by a pure pop production, the lyrics of the song are simply empowering and Katy is no longer willing to sit back quietly. She’s become her own hero and will not take flak from anyone as she continues to channel her winning qualities.

Not Like The Movies - Janelle Monae

Spoiler

My concept was to play to Janelle's strengths, her androgyny. She can play both feminine and masculine roles thus showing gender fluidity. This emphasizes her versatility.

Masculine-

ea7957f719a4d1e9ba7a211dfb87abdd.jpg

Feminine- 931755-800w.jpg

For the song part, I decided to use genres instead of a difference in concepts. Janelle has experimented with a numerous amount of genres across her three albums, thus I decided to go down the genre route. On her album Dirty Computer, there is a recurring theme of self- love, female sexual liberation and the significance of black women taking back their power (all are feminist topics). Two songs on the album that effectively highlight these themes are Django Jane and PYNK. Both of these songs express similar themes but they are both different style of music. Django Jane is a hip-hop/rap song while PYNK is funk/r&b. In spite of this, it displays that Janelle can showcase  the same feminist theme while using different genres thus demonstrating her versatility as an artist.

Django Jane-

Pynk-
Janelle further builds upon these themes of self-love, sexual liberation, and reclaiming one's power with the androgyny seen in her photoshoots. She has constantly explored gender fluidity throughout her career -- an expression that aligns with her music and personal experiences, and serves to inspire. Her confidence and creativity have become a voice for the marginalized, and this intersectional perspective represents versatility of the humanexperience and an acceptance for all identities

Guero - Ariana Grande

Spoiler

ARIANA GRANDE

Photos:

81iao84tzyp21.jpg

t6pgDP2.jpg

Versatility is about being able to convey multiple facets of yourself. Both photos provided show just that about Ariana.

The first photo is more soft with the lighting, the background is introspective, and the shot is almost entirely focused on her. Ariana looks almost vulnerable as she has on a minimal amount of make up. She even has her hair down which is a depart from her signature pony.

In the other, she has one a more exaggerated look: heavier eye shadow, off the shoulder jacket, multi-colored hair. Even the background is a little more energetic.

Both pics show two sides to Ariana: the more vulnerable picture shows her inner self, a side that's more hidden, while the other more exaggerated and confident photo, is showing her outer self, the side she likes to show us.

Songs:

7 rings / ghostin'

The aftermath of personal tragedy, heightened social media presence, and an influx of new songs, Ariana Grande's celebrity status has grown exponentially over the last few years. Of course, this increase in star power has led to heightened media attention and commentary from the entire world. It's the classic dilemma for someone in the public eye: how do you balance your private life and external persona? How do you express the fun, extroverted side expected of a celebrity, while also validating the raw and real experiences of the human? With so much tumult happening in her life, Ariana has put pen to paper and illustrates both her inner and external sides through her music. It takes confidence and adaptability to process all of these experiences into memorable songs, but Ariana has proven herself to be incredibly savvy at telling the story of her life -- every single facet of it.

"7 rings" is a fun, upbeat, urban song about showing off what the young star has amassed in her 6 year career and being able to share that with her close friends. Extroverted in the sense that the song exudes confidence and knowing that she has it all.

On the other side, "ghostin'", is a much more personal song which touches on one of her most tumultuous losses in her life, and one that is important to her narrative. This song is one with a deeper meaning to Ariana, and shows another side to the star that we don't get to see too often.

Queen Conchita - Conchita Wurst

Spoiler

I have chosen for this round to show the feminine and masculine traits of Conchita Wurst and how prominent they are in both his music and physical appearance.

Femininity, often associated with gentleness, empathy and sensitivity.

302ci2d.jpg

The Other Side of Me is a soft piano ballad that showcases her beautiful tone and effortless vocals. The lyrics also showing the vulnerable side of Conchita.

"But I'm scared to my bones
Don't blame me
Just hold me"

Masculinity, often associated with strength, leadership and independence.

2hyxjx3.jpg

A radical new style and modern, pulsing electro feel in Hit Me is worlds away from what Conchita was originally known for. The lyrics show his assertiveness.

"cause i won’t let you threaten me

and i won’t give you parts of me"

Boys - Britney Spears

Spoiler

4b32900c59c07756653a921818fceb53.jpg

DpEm3R7XUAA5-rm.jpg

For my photos this round I'm serving you "What her husband doesn't know.." Britney is serving you stay at home mom in the first photo, innocent, sweet, susie homemaker. When her husband leaves for work she is a PVC Princess who hosts several men in her basement serving dominatrix. Britney truly can serve you two polar opposite looks not many people can do that.

Unlike many other artists in this game who are LOCAL to the US only, Britney Spears is an INTERNATIONAL LEGEND. She has to be able to be versatile in her music to appeal to the wide array of audience that she has across the world. This is why I chose to feature two songs that tap into different markets. The bop Outrageous shows how Britney is able to appeal to those who are are into more of an urban style of music and then you have Change Your Mind (No Seas Cortes) which gives you that Spanish flair for our South American stans out there.

Touch It - Beyonce

Spoiler

72ccasjk6hdn.jpg5xhhvpyfs256.jpg

beyonce shows true versatility throughout her whole career. she’s able to serve many different concepts and here are two different examples that are very different from one another.  she was able to pull off a dark evil queen in one picture and the exact opposite in the next photo where she’s viewed as an innocent woman full of many different colors around her.

my two song choices: blow & daddy lessons

throughout the many years of beyonce’s musical career, she created many songs under the pop and r&b genres but still has a lot more versatility. even within the genre of r&b, beyonce has experimented many different genres within it. blow experiments with both disco and funk while still staying true to beyonce’s signature r&b sound. with daddy lessons, it shows a whole other side of beyonce where she experiments with both folk and country and sounds perfect doing it.

KatyCatPH - Taylor Swift

Spoiler

Pure vs Cheeky

large.png

lcqizWm.jpg

Today #WeStandWithTaylor. So I have here two photos of her standing up. But that's where the comparison stops. Top photo shows Taylor's conservative and innocent side while bottom photo shows her liberated and racy. On both photos you can see her arms open on her sides but while on the top photo she's holding her long flowy pure white dress, she's not holding anything on the bottom as she's wearing a skimpy, form-fitting outfit that shows her curves. And though she's standing on both photos, her legs are positioned differently. And her hairstyle, the background, her posture and expression are totally different, making the photos completely varied composition-wise but still complementary enough to show versatility.

tl;dr: These photos show variance both in message and composition.

Innocent Love vs. Lustful Attraction

This two songs are totally of different genres. One full-on country, the other a straight up pop. Also the songs are serving different moods. The first one light and jovial, the other dark and serious. Their themes also vary. The first one is showing innocence and a naïve look on love while the other is showing lustful and risqué attraction.

Alena - Selena Gomez

the shadow & the light

v32YYRa.png

zRlM2To.png

'here selena godmez serves the OPPOSITES, hardcore. in the first picture she is serving darkness, horror movie, sadness and drama mama.

in the second picture she has come to light. she IS the light. she is giving brightness, light, and highly the opposite of what she was serving in the first picture. i mean she is carrying an umbrella made out of flowers! so sweet, where as the first picture is more so bittersweet.

she can turn ANY look, just watch her slay all of the categories x

Versatility.

Selena Godmez is the goddess of serving different genres of music. You mention a genre, she's done it! And most likely better than any of your faves ever could dream off xo. I decided to send songs that portray her 'Pop Punk' rebelness and incredible EDM iconicness! Now i'll let these critically acclaimed masterpieces do their talking!

Pinkbox - Celine Dion

Spoiler

PHOTOS:

Related imageImage result for celine dion met gala 2019

The first picture has a very heavy mood to it, she's mourning, holding back her tears because she wants her kids to see her stay strong and her outfit is very simple and illustrates the sorrow perfectly. All the people, the location, the fact that it's a fairly private event, also adds to that atmosphere.

In the second picture, she's having fun, she's camp, she's all sparkly with all that fringe, she wants everyone to look at her, take her picture and see that she's really THAT bitch and fashion icon, she's serving LEGS. As opposed to the first picture, she's there with tons of celebrities wearing ridiculous and fierce outfits as well.

SONGS:

BECAUSE YOU LOVED ME / TREAT HER LIKE A LADY

In Because You Loved Me, Céline talks about a significant other who guides her, encourages her and protects her, making who she is today, the best version of herself that she can be. She thanks that person for making her life as beautiful as it is.

In Treat Her Like A Lady, she almost accuses about a boy for treating a woman like **** and how that changed her for the worse, with her going crazy and ending up in jail, which is the complete opposite for BYLM.

The genres are also very different with BYLM being a pop ballad and THLAL being more reggae, showing off her versatility.

Psycho - Lady Gaga

Spoiler

GAGA vs. LADY

PHOTOS

born-this-way-ball-58140-1.2000x0.jpg

rcev0ahm2tb21.jpg

/---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------/

In the first photo, you see the crazy and theatrical "Gaga" side to Lady Gaga, characterized by an over the top, alien-like outfit. In the second photo, you see a toned down, mature and beautiful version of Lady Gaga, which represents her "Lady" side. I used performance photos because they show how versatile a performer Lady Gaga is.

/---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------/

SONGS: Government Hooker / La Vie En Rose

/---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------/

The first song, "Government Hooker", represents "Gaga" because it is wild, heavy on production, explicit and literally starts with the chant "Gaga". On the other hand, there is "La Vie En Rose" for "Lady", which is a softer, vocals-centered and live song. The difference between the two songs is like night and day, and the versatility in Lady Gaga's discography is clear.
