Omg this best of is a CONCEPT and we love a concept.

Anyway sadly I don't love your taste much - but as a good gay I've come here to praise your love for Ari and Carly and that is that. :keir:

I tried to listen Empress Of last album, but besides couple tracks it wasn't for me :michael:

Posted

Haven't heard the top two E's. Actually i'm only aware of Empress of. Glad Everything To Me is bolded.

Posted

Not familiar with either of those E artists and the only name I recognize is Empress Of (who I've never listened to lol)

E's were lowkey weak but there were some notable ones this year. Earl Sweatshirt came through at the end of the year with Some Rap Songs if you haven't heard. Ella Mai made waves (Boo'd Up is my **** but I never gave her album a chance since I didn't expect to like it). Everything is Recorded doesn't seem to be well known but the group has collaborations with Sampha, Syd (from The Internet), and Ibeyi. Esperanza Spalding also dropped an album/EP though I never got the chance to finish listening to it.

Only listened to Us and it was cute I guess. Some big bops, yes, but nothing on the same level as her debut alberm

Idk the Ds or the Es

Christine :clap3: Confidence Man was ok lol

Sorry for being MIA for travel, I will update as much as I CAN and comment on other Best Of's :)

Top Artist: Florence and the Machine

Sca5Z8G.png

Honestly, this album isn't even my favorite Florence album LOL possibly my least favorite actually now that I've had time to sit with it. Honestly, I think seeing her headline at a festival this year & doing some of the songs live is what kept me enjoying High as Hope. TBH her live performance made me like HBHBHB more... kii. Anyway I def was into this album back when it came out and I still think it's NOT BAD, but she's done better. The softer sounds on the album work in its favor and it's a nice breath of fresh air, but it gets boring quick.

Esp after seeing her live, "Big God" is still the track that stands out as the top pick for me. It's an actual somewhat change of pace for the band (which is much needed) and it's so OVERDRAMATIC that I have to love it. I mean, it's about a dude not texting her back and her retort is that "he needs a big God." Very Florence in that way of songwriting, it's great. Originally, "Grace" was my favorite track, but I think because she never performed it live it fell off a bit. It's such a beautiful ode to her sister and is so well-written and well-structured. "South London Forever" is a suuuuper underrated track. It's so sweet and, if you ignore some silly lyrics, really leaves an impression on reflections of your childhood/teenage years.

I also enjoy "Hunger" (kind of an obvious like), "The End of Love" (that line about her grandmother really gets me weeping), and "Sky Full of Song" (FIIIIIIIRE!). I still really don't care for "Patricia" or "10000 Years" sry.

Runner-Up: Father John Misty

Another honestly moment - this album I have not listened to THAT MUCH this year. BUT it is one of the "F" full albums that I have liked in full. "God's Favorite Customer" AKA the title track is my favorite. I also enjoy "Disappointing Diamonds...", "Mr. Tillman", & "Please Don't Die." I believe the main reason I like this record so much is that I HATED that record that came out last year. Playing God or whatever? idk her.

I haven't seen anyone mention my favorite song on Cardi's album yet :rip:

Not so much going for E's this year huh?

I appreciate that everyone seems to have a favorite Cardi song different from everyone else

That's talent!

Haven't heard of either of these E artists :dies: might need to check them out

TBH not sure if you'd like either - MAYBE Emily King.

Earl I have on my list to listen to before the year is over! BOO'D UP I should have included that I love that song (but didn't listen to the full album). Everything is Recorded sounds amazing based on who they've worked with so I will put them on my radar. Thanks!

I understand it's appeal, but it wasn't really my thing/didn't feel like revisiting it much, so it felt okay to me

Florence :alexz: I love Grace too but when I found out it was about her sister I was a bit confused cuz the song is so overdramatic like as if she's praying to the heavens asking for grace but it turned out that the song was about something much smaller :toofunny2:

High as Hope is my least fave Flo album but Big God is a career highlight for sure :jonny:

FJM's album is a vast improvement over last year's pretentious snoozefest but am still not a fan

Wondering the same in regards to Friendly Fires' album.

i haven't touched florence's album since the day it dropped... it wasn't even bad, it's just that every single song was a huge ass 5/10 in the most uninteresting, middle of the road way omg. but she's always fantastic live so maybe i would need that too to feel it more

100% agree on FJM's album, i was v into it for like a week, then i realised i was mostly happy it wasn't pure comedy bc that **** STINKS. it does have some highs though

Posted

Lmao is that Florence pick photoshopped? :lmao:

I kinda gave Flo and FJM the cold shoulder this year :katie: I guess I lost my interest in them?

I had no idea Fyfe dropped a new song  I'll go check that out. If you want another F artist, Flatbush Zombies dropped a great rap album this year.

Florence :clap3: Father :worship: Even though you haven't slayed me in a while.

Top Artist: Gallant

1522735388_40478eb6eb50fb69cac44a5fb6d8ed20.jpg

Gallant’s whole release schedule this year has been really weird. The “first single” came out in April and then he’s been scattering random songs out the rest of the year. Apparently there was going to be a mini-album - that never came out. A tour was planned for the end of the year too - implying a release of album #2 was imminent - but was then cancelled (this was likely due to his team booking WAY too big venues and tickets not seeing as well as they had hoped).

Regardless of all that, I’ve actually quite enjoyed each song Gallant released this year. Bummer that it hasn’t led to a proper album yet, but hopefully we won’t have to wait too long into 2019 for more. The first single, “Gentleman” is actually my favorite of the tracks so far. His falsetto sounds better than ever and the song as a whole is just very sexy. Great music video, too. “TOOGOODTOBETRUE” is a great change of pace for Gallant. It’s a very typical Sufjan Stevens song (shocker that he features on the track), but it’s beautiful. I think Rebecca Sugar added a good bit to the writing of the song. “Haha No One Can Hear You!” is another fave of mine.

I’ve refused to listen to the song he did with Moon-Face-Emoji Cyrus so let’s forget that ever happened and move on.

Runner-Up: Gavin Turek

Gavin-Turek-Slicked-Hair.jpg

She only released one song this year but it SLAYED ME. I love her and just want to give her as much recognition as I can. “Whitney” is a beautiful ode to both an idol (Whitney Houston, of course) and to yourself. A great feel-good bop. She also featured on that Steven A. Clark song “Easy Fall” which is a beautiful duet/collaboration from this year. I’m expecting more (AN ALBUM??) from her next year, so keep your eyes out!

nnn okay I see what you mean with Grace - pretty over dramatic for a song about her sister. I feel like that's where Florence shines tho when she's being OTT like on Big God.

I didn't think it was THAT bad but I 100% see where people are coming from. She didn't do TEOL live when I saw her so it DID fall a bit in my ranking, but it's still great.

I think HAH left a bit more of an impact because I saw her live really soon after the album dropped so I played it a fair amount in advance in case she played a lot of the new songs. PURE COMEDY that's what that album is called lmao.

Maybe :eli: Yes and yes the Fyfe song/mini EP/album thingy was cute! Didn't touch anything on his album from last year, but still a good listen. HMM I will see if I like FZ much!

I always forget Mr. Tillman is your boo until I see your BO's or you check out mine and I talk about him. I was talking to my dad about Franz Ferdinand and how we listened to them back in the day! I guess one of the two dudes left the band so you're not missing too much by not listening to the album, but the songs I liked I liked quite a bit!

Wouldn't have pegged you as a Friendly Fires fan! LLW is a jam indeed. Heaven is pretty different for them so I'm quite into that one too!
