I regret not getting into Tierra Whack

This update resonated with my spirit.  Girlfriend, Focus, waiting on the Warmth, Sugar & Spice, Like I Do :jonny:

Apparently the instrumental for Girlfriend is really just an already created synth line from some random program but I don't even care.  She made it sound expensive.

The songs are all like 1 minute long, you can certainly catch up and spare like 14 minutes lol. They're all pretty good but end abruptly, I'm still trying to wrap around the intent.

I could have sworn GF was a sample of a very popular song back then but cool fact. Wonder what it was.

I don't hate post but I wouldn't voluntarily listen to him either.

the pop songs here r my favorite~

I swear after "White Iverson" once I found out her was filthy I was crushed/done. I think he's too formulaic/generic now. I can't for the life of me listen to his album.

Charli, MorMor, Hatchie, and Christine :clap3:

I wish I could say I enjoyed SiR's offerings this year but I didn't :katie:

And I'm pretty good on never listening to another Post song :somepoints:

D'Evil's was his most memorable track. I thought November was a letdown too.

What is oh baby doing here

My cutoff is so weird, you'll see in the future :skull: My cutoffs pretty much December 1st then whatever old song gets a music video I treat it as a new single of the year, just so I can slide it through my list. That's why "Oh Baby" made it but can't be that high.

Hope that next year will be big for Nilüfer Yanya, she has so much potential. God's Plan was actually one of two or three songs I enjoyed form Scorpion :thing: The Night Song, oh baby and Full Control :heart2:

I'm so ready!

Skorpion is straight booty. And then "In My Feelings" being a single/viral smash ruined the album from having 3 good songs to 2.

Idk I really get a feel from the song that's very HAIM-like in the melody of the chorus and harmonies. I could see them owning that song.

My My My by Troye is so good, and I don't even like him that much, says a lot about song then, it's pure gem.

Timberflake making it , wow, but that song is good.

It's crazy to think. Troye would be slaying like this outside the gay community.

65. King Princess, “Talia”

What's it about? Heartbreak and drinking to numb the pain.

Sounds like: A hit. A bit of sythpop and bombastic elements of a big mainstream song.

f55bPNB.png

64. Tirzah, “Holding On”

Why is it important? Remember a few years ago I put the people onto NyQuil queen? Anyway, it was hard to pick between this and her other 2 singles: The smooth and spacey “Glady”, the experimental piano-driven ballad “Devotion”. I went with the ‘livelier’ fist pumping “Holding On.”

Sounds like: ‘90s trip-hop circa 1995-6.

0m1lxYE.png

63. 6LACK, “Pretty Little Fears (feat. J. Cole)”

Why is it important? I like the atmosphere of the song, the wordplay and contrast between 6lack and J. Cole on the same track.

Key Lyric/Bit: J. Cole’s verse – all of it!

0Z9QRNx.png

62. Troye Sivan, “Dance to This (feat. Ariana Grande)”

Why is it important? This was no where near touching “My My My” or even “Bloom” at some point, but I’m a sucker for a mellow slow jam and midtempo, if you haven’t noticed already. Inspired by Janet too? I’m on board.

What’s it about? Being a home body… having a body party.

jcD3qxC.png

61. Maggie Rogers, “Fallingwater”

Why is it important? A piano-led slow burner powered by that hypnotic voice.

Key Lyric/Bit: The outro brings it home.

Great set but is NyQuil queen supposed to be a compliment? :skull:

60. Jhene Aiko, “Sativa (feat. Swae Lee)”

Feels like: Kaleidoscope vision.

Why is it important? A top track on the 2017 album ‘Trip’ and officially released in January, “Sativa” filled the R&B void until Ella Mai came through. This was one of the hottest R&B tracks, don’t you forget it.

BIrPrfI.png

59. Nicki Minaj, “Chun-Li”

Why is it important? If we’re going to give Azealia a pass, then why not? Nicki’s was even more terrible this year, but “Chun” matters too.

Key Lyric/Bit: Those horns.

M82zqAx.png

58. Ariana Grande, “no tears left to cry”

Why is it important? I’ve grown to appreciate this as the greatest returns in pop music this year. WHAT. A. BOP.

Key Lyric/Bit: Grande’s voice effortlessly soaring over the flawless Swedish pop production.

o3ud7YC.png

57. Robyn, “Missing U”

Sounds like: The resurgence of a Dancehall Queen!

Why is it important? Classic Robyn sound: sorrow that’s unpacked through luxurious electronica and dance.

7Ns9Exy.png

56. Pusha T, “If You Know You Know”

Key Lyric/Bit: If you know you know (I managed to use this as a catchphrase so much this year)

Why is it important? One of the most immediate openers of the year. We are reminded that is still unmatched in his ear for production, Pusha continues to add to his ‘best verses’ catalog, and together they make magic.

No lol, uhhh just self awareness. I know sis can be a bit of a bore. I think she's improved since her early stuff, she now has more life.

Chun-Li gathering acclaim from ATRLers :jonny5:

Posted

I haven't liked a Jhene song since The Worst, which remains one of the best songs of the decade. Maybe I'll give her another shot. Chun Li is fine and honestly if you're still going hard over Azealia then ya.

Tirzah :clap3:

Dance To This was ok even though it had Ariana on it

NTLTC, Missing U and Chun-Li :clap3:

Missing U, NTLTC :clap3:

Bloom (song) is better than DTT, but this is still a jam :katie2:

Sativa :jonny5:such a great bop, really glad for its success

Chun Li is good :clap3: the best Nicki song this year

NTLTC is perfect :jonny5:

MU :smitten: such a great song for a comeback

Whatchu mean? re: hmmm no spoilers bby

Solid choices. IYKYK, Missing U, no tears, and Sativa :clap3:

Nick should've came harder on Chun-Li

Posted

Missing U and Chun Li are excellent :clap3:

I also liked Dance to This although I agree it was the weakest of Troye's singles this year.

Posted

Tirzah is a talented legend you were ahead of your time.

Posted

Tirzah is a legend wbk! :heart2: Also love seeing Missing U!

Posted

Dance to This is a BOP! Love their voices together.

"no tears left to cry" is obvi one of the year's best pop songs. I wouldn't be mad if someone said it was the best.

"Chun-Li" is Nicki's best ever work. So good.

Posted

Dance to This is better than Bloom and My My My IMO. :eddie: But yassss Robyn! Missing U definitely has the classic Robyn sound. Can't help but love it.

I like most of the songs in this set!

True about Nicki unfortunately.  Chun-Li is her best song this year too!  The lazy horn sample too ugh.

if you know you know absolutely kicks ass and chun li is v v great when played at 2x speed

A small joy with an urban update! Happy Holidays everyone!

55. Alina Baraz, “I Don't Even Know Why Though”

Why is it important? She wasn’t viewed in any way as a new R&B girl to step up on the scene, she was forgotten. Alina Baraz had been quietly readying herself for her moment and still made a splash to me  with this bop and clever sample of Mint Condition.

What's it about? Crazy things you’d do for love.

tjtvzo9.png

54. Natalie Prass, “Short Court Style”

Why is it important? Woo, Natalie knows how to make some good grown folks’ music. This is such a sultry groove. A transcendent funk-pop charm with a melody that is impossible to get out of your head.

Sounds like: Motown Diana Ross.

VlKGM3i.png

53. J. Cole, “ATM”

Why is it important? He’s visually creative more than he’s ever been, and the message he makes still hits.

Key Lyric/Bit: "Without it I'm miserable/Don't wanna fall off so I'm all in my bag/Thankin' God like it's biblical/I know it's gon' solve every problem I have/I balled on them principles/Remember the teachers that was all on my ass/Now look all of them, pitiful/And all of a sudden I'm so good at math"

9jGEwbq.png

52. Ella Mai, “Trip”

Why is it important? Unlike “Boo’ed Up,” the surefire bop “Trip” will drive you crazy trying to pin point what it may sample. Keep trying though, Ella (and the machines behind her) has an ear and successfully pulled off something original that sounds like a straight throwback.

Key Lyric/Bit: The singalong chorus.

22YyBFd.png

51. Migos, “Stir Fry”

Why is it important? Culture II become the end in quality for the group that inspired a whole generation of copycats. “Stir Fry” was the only thing that really showed they could push things forward. Pharrell provided a fun beat and Migos provided the right playfulness to pull it off.

Feels Like: Drop It Like It's Hot” all over again.

Trip is cute, I want to get into Ella more

Missing U, Stir Fry, No Tears Left To Cry, Chun-Li -- all year-defining!

That Jhene song also got stuck in my head a few times this year :heart2:

Points made with Holding On, ntltc, Missing U, IYKYK, Short Court Style and Stir Fry :clap3:
