lhdang2000 Posted December 19, 2018 Posted December 19, 2018 I don't like 'better off' that much. In fact, the second half of the album is a no from me.
Bubble Tea Posted December 19, 2018 Author Posted December 19, 2018 11. Sweet but Psycho - Ava Max LOVE this song - I’d be surprised if any ATRLer doesn’t use it. It’s just such a perfect pop song - but I suspect the main problem that will eternally plague Ava is comparisons to Gaga. (funny it seems like 10mins ago we were obsessed with comparing Gaga to Madonna and suddenly Gaga has been around for 10 years, is so established and now the new girls are being compared to her) The truth is it’s not surprising because Ava looks STRIKINGLY similar to Gaga (G.U.Y. video Gaga specifically) and sounds similar too. “Sweet but Psycho” sounds VERY similar to Gaga’s “Monster” - but the facts are, I’m not mad AT ALL. We’ve been begging for The Fame Monster 2.0 for years and now we’re finally getting it, well, at least one song from what it could be - from Ava Max. I like her sound, her look and I think she’s a cute, fresh and welcome addition onto the pop scene. She has like no material so far so we don’t really know what she’s about - but her performing seems cute and her uneven haircut is kinda iconic already so like I’m looking forward to seeing what’s ahead with her. The monsters better keep it cute and let her shine! Little monsters famously have no sense of humour after all so any perceived slight that she’ll inevitably pull once she’s sick of being compared to Gaga for the 1000th time will send them.
potent Posted December 19, 2018 Posted December 19, 2018 I don't dislike SBP, but I don't use it either Excited to see what made the top 10 though!

ATRL Moderator Unoriginal Posted December 19, 2018 ATRL Moderator Posted December 19, 2018 better off the best song on Sweetener and one of Ari's best in general
lhdang2000 Posted December 19, 2018 Posted December 19, 2018 Sweet but Psycho is cute. The scream at the beginning tho.
Bubble Tea Posted December 20, 2018 Author Posted December 20, 2018 10. Peach - Broods Well well the first track from my glorious top 10! And who would have thought one of my favourite tracks of my whole year would be… a song from two people I went to highschool with, with Caleb literally being in my classes for 5 years, in the same year. I didn’t really like the sound Broods had when they first emerged on the scene. It was all a bit “wannabe-Lorde” which was a global endemic at the time (anyone denying “Royals” and Pure Heroine didn’t re-shape and tone down the sound of pop music for a few years is just dumb/ignorant, pressed, or both) but that impact was ESPECIALLY strong in New Zealand. Also Broods had the exact same producer as Lorde who understandably had kinda created a sound for himself and his productions and kinda wanted to stay on trend, but for me that made Georgia a wannabe-Lorde and that was kinda a lame way for her to be portrayed. That being said, since then I feel they’ve 100% broken away from any Lorde familiarities and are now entirely doing their own thing. I think their sound is now really distinct and their genre and style is so their own - and I love it! “Peach” is the first single from the yet-to-be-announced album and it is very promising as far as I’m concerned! Georgia’s vocals are better than ever and the video is quirky and artsy. It feels very “them” (from what I know of them - which isn’t that much). I don’t really know how much or what Caleb contributes to the duo, but I know he plays the guitar well and probably works on lyrics and production. Either way - I’m hyped for their new era. They recently opened for Taylor Swift in Australia / New Zealand dates of the reputation Tour which is massive for them. Certified NZ royalty! Who’d have thought when he was low-key bullying me for being gay when we were younger in high school...
The7thStranger Posted December 20, 2018 Posted December 20, 2018 I hear the Lorde influence, but I think "Peach" has more sonic content than Lorde's first album. It's a bit more fearless with the way it jumps around.
Bubble Tea Posted December 20, 2018 Author Posted December 20, 2018 10.5. Go Easy/Hey Love (Pt. 1) - The Venus Project Welp let me just slip this little 10.5 post in here - I forgot this song! When I was writing my previous post about Broods I suddenly remembered, shockingly, that I had not mentioned one of most listened to albums of the year (also shout-out to SZA’s Ctrl that I only got into this year but listened to A LOT - but I try and keep my rate to only songs released this year, so poor December releases basically lol), and that is Georgia’s (from Broods) solo project, The Venus Project and the album Vol. 1. It’s a really amazing record made solely by women and it’s a lot more artistic, experimental and far-less radio friendly than any of her other stuff. Funnily enough I hadn’t even heard of it until my ex-boyfriend (who I miss a lot and we only broke up cause I moved overseas :weeps:) played this record to me on a long drive on a hot, sunny, quiet day and I found this to be a very raw, honest and emotive piece of music. It’s so moving for me. There’s a terrific spoken monologue at the end of this track (the “Hey Love” portion of the song) and Georgia is like calling a friend or her younger sister or something and it’s like she’s leaving her a voice message, but talking about her feelings and how sometimes she feels down and doesn’t always know why. IDK it’s just very relatable and the way she talks is very much how I talk. Anyway this is a BEAUTIFUL album and I really recommend you guys check it out! It’s very chill, well produced and melodic. Love many of the tracks. It’s a real “album album” aka. Not singles-based at all. Very cohesive.

I haven't tried her album but I really need to get into it. Honestly Vietnam has some seriously good pop. It's quite ahead of the trend, or at least on-trend. I was shook cause only other music I know is Japanese and Chinese which seem kinda dated, Obviously K-Pop is fresh and popular but kinda in its own lane from what I consider "pop" aka. American/UK stuff I guess.
