19. R.E.M
- Ariana Grande

G2XybeX.jpg

A lot of people that I know don’t like this song and think it drones on, or is boring. However that’s kinda the point, even Ariana says in the song “does this end?” which is hilarious. But I love the house-vibes that this song gives off. It’s a little experimental and drawn out which I like - not the usual punchy verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus we’re all so used to. It’s a little slower, takes its times, and gives me the sense the song was created in some jam session and Ariana felt happy and liked it. Isn’t that ultimately what we kinda want from our faves?

You nailed it with this write-up. I agree completely.

R.E.M. and Honey. :clap3: Serving taste so far!

R.E.M. is cute, definitely more tolerable than other tracks, but if I made Sweatener into a 8-track EP then it wouldn't be included. Honey :heart2: A bit of a grower, for some reason I wasn't into it until I listened with the rest of the album.

18. 1999
- Charli XCX (feat. Troye Sivan)

ze1fqtn.jpg

The video for this song definitely hooked me in - but like most Charli XCX things, she just has this unusual, roundabout way of drawing me in to her music. In some ways I don’t like her but in many ways I do - and when she occasionally decides to go pure pop she serves a bop like this and then I am just a sucker. It’s a little been-there-done-that with that other girl’s “2002” song but I think this is definitely done a lot better.

Obviously the video is AMAZING and gave the gays exactly what we want (Sims, Titanic, American Beauty, Baby-G watches, Britney references) and the song is catchy on time. I can’t remember how Max Martin was involved but I remember Charli did an interview where she asked him for advice or something and he told her to just reference “...Baby One More Time” (aka. His own song) and she did and… well yeah, it’s just iconic that he knows what a legendary song he produced is and how everyone still gets their life from it to this day. The slayage.

Also - I was especially a sucker for the nostalgia element of the song given I am currently living overseas and haven’t seen my hometown in 6 months and I really miss it and therefore it makes me a little bit of a sucker for the song.

17. Party For One
- Carly Rae Jepsen

D6E5h2S.jpg

I think a lot of people thought this song was a miss but I really loved it - it’s exactly what I want from Carly, pure pop, and a heart-warming, positive message hidden inside what are often bittersweet lyrics. I think we can all relate to feeling rejected and having to cheer ourselves up - god knows I have to do it often.

The video was super cute and very feel-good, and that’s kinda the essence of Carly and why so many of us love her. She makes us feel good about ourselves, she sings from the heart and she really has her audience in mind when she creates music and imagery and I appreciate that so much! I just love love LOVE Carly Rae Jepsen and I am so glad she has transcended her status as a one-hit-wonder but creating music especially for her fans rather than continuing to pander to current trends. We already know that E•MO•TION is one of the best pop albums of the decade and what she’s capable of.

Wow what a perfect write-up on REM. This is exactly what makes it my favorite track too but you explained it WAY better.

Also, Honey, Party of One >>>> 1999 is cute too!

1999 is such a great pop track :jonny: I would've prefer solo version tho :eli:

PFO is.. cute, but nowhere near to Emo tracks

I love "My My My!" and "Sober" from your list so far :jonny5:  The other songs are pretty great as well :clap3:

#20 through 16 looks good.

1999 and Party for One are a slay! They were too new to get that high on my list, but they’re some of my favorite songs right now :jamming:

I love your write-ups. :smitten:

To me, Party for One is a miss. She was away for a while and claimed to have written around a hundred tracks (which is good for 5 albums?), and she gave me the same thing of not even stuffs from E-mo-tion but album tracks from KISS honestly. :dies:

1999 is a cute track, I was hooked when I played it the first time.

1999 :jamming: Charli and Troye both released better singles this year, but it's a fun one. Party for One mmm

No one’s gonna appreciate this comparison but it kinda reminds me of the detested Madonna MDNA track “B-Day Song” with M.I.A. It’s just Madonna being silly and carefree for the first time in a long time, and I was so happy she wanted to do that! I know we all want our faves to be successful but we also want them to be happy, and to share their happiness makes me feel good.

I love a lot of the lyrics in the song and the whole vibe just makes me feel relaxed and happy. Ultimately it’s an ode to a lover / crush and gives Ari a second to just chill.

16. Real Friends
- Camila Cabello

usSfGjM.jpg

People seem to have a lot of beef with Camila and I don't really know why. Ok I don't know - she has said some messy racist things a few years ago in the past. However I'd like to believe she's learnt from her mistakes, her apology was sincere and that we could perhaps let someone learn from their mistake rather than hold it over them forever? I'm not excusing racism but I do think it's important we let people grow. Hell, I will admit that I wasn't exactly sharing the kindest of thoughts about a guy at my school (who admittedly I already didn't like) who later had gender reassignment surgery to become a woman. Then I was ignorant and naive about what it means to be transgender, but I'd like to think in the time since I have educated myself, learnt and realized just how heavy the toll is on those who feel uncomfortable with their assigned gender and/or body.

ANYWAY - that's kind of a random rant and a really roundabout way of explaining why I love Camila and why I'm not going to let her past define her, especially since she has acknowledged her mistakes and apologised for them.

"Real Friends" is such a beautiful song and I really connected to it - not because I don't believe my friends are "real", but because of the way I often feel around new people. I guess it's something to do with this social media age and how fake and contrived everyone is - I detest a lot of people's social media persona and I hate the way I am sucked into it too. It's such a cheap and easy way to get a wee mood boost - post a cute pic, watch the boys slide into the DMs etc. It's a fleeting feeling and I always feel 10x more worthless afterwards, cause I'm fully aware of exactly what I'm doing, but instagram is digital meth and I am always craving the next hit.

Sheesh I'm really going on a random rant - I am in a mood if you can't tell. Anyway, basically the song just really resonates with me - so many relatable lyrics "the place I'm living in just doesn't feel like home" (living in Taiwan currently, I'm from NZ - couldn't be more relatable), "looking for some real friends" (feeling like I can't be often with many of my friends regarding personal stuff), "feeling so alone in every crowded room" (story of my life - feeling like the odd gay out with my straight friends, feeling insecure and like a fraud at professional functions, feeling on the outskirts of the clique etc).

Anyway I've rambled on and this isn't the last we'll be seeing of Cam#1la.

15. In The Next Life / Boo! Bitch!
- Kim Petras

5nGQrNg.jpg

These are actually two tracks that I've decided to combine because "Boo! Bitch!" flows so directly on from "In The Next Life" and I CBF writing about "Boo! Bitch!" alone but it is SUCH a smash EP outtro that it deserves to be on my top 25. So these two tracks are both from Kim Petras' Halloween-themed EP titled TURN OFF THE LIGHT, VOL. 1 and it is BRIMMING with absolute jams. The downside of my stanning is that all of Kim Petras' stuff (except her latest Cheat Codes collab) is produced by Dr. Luke aka. hideous producer with a well-documented terrible attitude, known for his alleged (but let's be real probable) raping of Kesha, and more recently being sued by his other prodigy Becky G for forcing her to promote his bottled water line without payment. Not to mention Kelly Clarkson and P!nk have both spoken out against his character. However despite all of this, and his bullying of Kesha and mocking her figure, many people still for some reason side with Luke and I guess it ultimately comes down to not liking Kesha so choosing to believe she is a liar rather than objectively looking at the facts and thinking about what is more likely.

So the moral of that story - he is absolute trash and I HATE him. HOWEVER - I am a damn sucker for a sexy female voice over a fantastic sparkly synth-rich production, and that is what Kim consistently has served time after time after time. "In The Next Life" is a fantastic smash bop and I LOVE how it's sung both in English and Kim's native language, German. It just goes off. I swear if I was drunk in a club and this bop went off I would be POUNDING the floor absolutely losing my shit.

Then, just as the song wraps up, or so you think, "Boo! Bitch!" BLASTS serving the world's most infectious beat, littered with Kim's trademark "woo-ah"s and serves as a brilliant outtro for both "In The Next Life" and the EP as a whole.

I couldn't recommend this EP more highly - check it out.
