Music Videos

#5 - Hayley Kiyoko: Curious

-

I've known about Miss Kiyoko ever since her days in The Stunners but I never followed her music or videos before. I was intrigued by the fact that she directed all of her own videos and it's nice to see her skills improve. This video has it all, jealous lovers, dance routines. It does a great job of showing all of her strengths.

#4 - Mitski: Nobody

-

Mitski created my favorite music video and song in 2016 with "Your Best American Girl". It's amazing to watch  as the meaning of nobody crystallizes at the end of the video.

#3 - Kelela: Frontline

-

I love the simplicity of videos like this and the Sims aesthetic. For me the video really picks up when Kelela picks up her girlfriends and they do a flawless dance routine.

Amazing #2 videos!! I've just downloaded Janelle's album (Yes, I know i'm late), but I think she might just end up at my rate too.

#2 - Childish Gambino: This is America

-

Perfect at generating reaction and a great example of satire. Very relevant to our day and age.

#1 - Janelle Monae: Make Me Feel

-

Janelle took her art to a whole other level with this music video. I'm a huge fan of the color and her clothing. Megababe Tessa Thompson helps too.

HM - Charli XCX & Troye Sivyan: "1999"

-

I really love the beat and melody of this song, but I'm not a huge fan of the lyrics. It banks too much on nostalgia. The way I think of it is that Charli is being ironic and satirizing the current obsession with the 90's. The 90's are great and all, but by focusing so much on them, the 2010's by extension aren't as half baked. If we're always looking back, how can we expect to be pioneers of the future?

#20 - Carrie Underwood: "The Champion (feat. Ludacris)"

-

#19 - Cardi B: "Thru Your Phone"

-

I love Cardi's vocals here. She doesn't have the most powerful singing voice, but it's earnest just like everything else she does.

#18 - Madison Beer: "Hurts Like Hell (feat. Offset)"

-

#17 - Lana Del Rey: "Venice Bitch"

-

#16 - Kacey Musgraves: "Butterflies"

-

#15 - SOPHIE: "Is It Cold In The Water"

-

#14 - Tinashe: "Throw A Fit"

-

#13 - Mitski: "Geyser"

#12 - Cardi B: "Money Bag"

-

Favorite song from Invasion of Privacy. The beat is really nice and Cardi does what she does best here.

#11 - Mitski: "Nobody"

#10 - Robyn: "Honey"

#9 - Sheck Wes: "Mo Bamba"

-

#8 - Kacey Musgraves: "High Horse"

#7 - Beach House: "Woo"

-

I love songs that feel tailored to a specific season. Woo for me just evoked feelings of Summer and everything that comes with it. This was easily my favorite song of the summer and my favorite album cut from 7.

#6 - Janelle Monae: "PYNK"

#5 - Julia Holter: "I Shall Love 2"

-

I find this song to be insanely beautiful.

#4 - Travis Scott: "STARGAZING"

#3 - Snail Mail: "Pristine"

-

My introduction to Snail Mail. I really love her voice here.

#2 - Frankie Cosmos: "Being Alive"

-

The song structure is really interesting and I love Greta's inclusion of her bandmates on vocals here.

#1 - Beach House: "Lemon Glow"

-

I cannot begin to describe how this song blew my mind on first listen. With all my favorite Beach House songs, I remember where I was when I first heard them and what I was feeling. After a long work week, this song was my healing balm after a long work week. I practically doubled over my desk  when the synth came on as Victoria sang "It's what you do, this pulls me through, to the other end, where it begins." As she continues and brings us more into her world, the song gets better and better. This song was such a revelation for me because I felt Beach House really progressed from their last album. Truly one of the best things I've heard all year.
