Pop 2 debuting on the new list :gaycat4: I still don't like 3 songs from it but it grew on me quite a bit since my first play.

FJM is out, which means the revisited list is automatically better

Pop 2 debut and FJM OUT talent always wins in the end.

I liked most of these EPs but none made my list, unfortunately. Still :heart2:

Also, POP 2 and most of those albums from last year :heart2:

Hello?

Update coming tomorrow! I'll get started on my songs list + replies later tonight.

I accidentally deleted my 2018 songs playlist right before the section opened, so instead of 100 songs it's the 40 I could remember --I wasn't about to relisten to all those projects-- :skull: I don't really feel too strongly about most songs/the ordering is pretty loose this year so feel free to drag, I'm ready for it (no Swift).

40. Vince Staples - Get The **** Off My Dick (Hip-Hop)

The only thing stopping this from being higher is the beat isn't hard enough.

39. Uncle Murda - Get The Strap (feat. 50 Cent, 6*x9*ne & Casanova) (Hip-Hop)

I hate that 69 is on this song --to the point I cut his verse and adlibs out--, but it can't be denied 50 dropped one of the best rap verses of the year. After social media took "get the strap" and ran with it he finally dropped the song and I guess it halfway lived up to the hype? Even though the hype was just for his series 'Power'. Casanova is the New York rapper of 2018 to watch, he carries the fiery hunger/authenticity of '03 50 but 50 is clearly the star of the song, with a verse that's been quoted to death on social media.

38.Cardi B - Get Up 10 (Pop Rap)

I pretty much forgot about most of the very forgettable Invasion of Privacy, but once you get past the fact Cardi is still one of the worst rappers out from a technical standpoint, this anthem can't be denied. Even with some cringe here and there, the aggression, charisma + hunger evens everything out. Will it be remembered like Dreams &Nightmares Intro? Of course not! But it bangs.

37. Uffie - Papercuts (Wonky)

Damn did everyone miss the fact that Uffie dropped new material? Y'all too busy gassing up Hatchie huh? jk. Here she is with a solid wonky track that was def the best out of the singles she dropped this year.

36. Father John Misty - The Songwriter (Singer/Songwriter)

Okay, Josh Tillman has def gotten stale since Honeybear but this was the highlight off his new album. I have a weakness for Sad Bastard music/film/television for whatever reason and this fits the bill better than anything else off that boring album.
35. Young MA - PettyWap

Young MA will forever be branded a one hit wonder, which is unfortunate because out of the new era of female rappers, she doesn't have any competition. A song she herself just described as catchy lines put together, it stuck with me through the year for her brushing off the underserving hate she gets daily. But hey, she's out here directing p0rn so she's getting coins whether she's a flop or not. The hypnotic beat combined with her  sauce & cockiness, I'm gonna need her to come through with another project after the underappreciated 'Herstory'.

34. Dream Wife - Hey Heartbreaker (Riot Grrrl/Alternative Rock)

Here's a new Riot Grrrl/alt rock girl group that actually makes pleasant music! An underrated choice for what's probably my 2nd favorite music video I've seen this year, this is a catchy little tune. I didn't get around to their album yet so fingers crossed I suppose.

33. Aseul - Always With You (Synthpop)

A comforting synthpop song, is a comforting synthpop song.

32.Jacquees - Special (Contemporary R&B)

Look, I don't really cosign this "I'm the King of R&B" **** he's trying to pull with one album out, but the fact he dropped gems this year is undeniable. Here, Jacquees collaborates with one of his R&B heroes --Jagged Edge-- and delivers this great closer to his album about how he wants to make things official because he's found a woman he really loves. Jacquees has a reputation for having more monogamous/less misogynistic lyrics compared to his peers nowadays and this is probably the best track to showcase that. His King of R&B claim is very premature, but if he keeps delivering gems like this maybe he can get a future seat at the table. If I wasn't doing a one song per artist rule he would appear later on down the line, but I wanted to give this track the slot. Even typing this I feel it should be higher.

31. Sade - The Big Unknown

Yes, Sade dropped new music. This is the 2nd time in the past two years she has dropped something new; both times for a film soundtrack! This was a song I needed but didn't know I needed until I heard it. Matching the emotion in 'Widows', nobody can convey sadness like Sade Adu.

i had no idea either sade or uffie released :rip: of course the big unknown is good, every sade song is, and i dig papercuts too. my favourite from this set is probably aseul

this is obviously true but i feel like she makes it to an advantage even? there's no one rapping quite like her cause duh, everyone can do it better, but that makes her fairly distinct

i like the upgraded list better, sleep well beast and pop 2 are great additions and pure comedy is genuinely one of my least favourite albums of the entire decade so glad that's out too

asdfghj I can't stand Pure Comedy nowadays :rip: . Vincent Staples is a future legend yes he is.

Also I’m currently listening to Sleep Well Beast while catching up on the Best Of. What a coincidence :jonny:

Did you like it?

I will have to think about that claim but it's not the worst choice. He really delivered.

I pretty much agree on Cardi, she has charisma which can kinda make up for the fact she's constantly off beat or out of breath but a whole album of it? No thanks.

Get Up 10 is Cardi's best song so far.  I think she's one of those artists where things work for her when they really shouldn't.

I didn't listen to that Uffie song but I listened to Drugs and it was  not my fave.

Love Aseul!!

What's with you and things getting deleted :deadbanana2:

Can't get into Cardi at all. Her "Style" isn't for me.

I don't have a strong opinion towards Jacquees but it always surprises me that Jagged Edge are still together releasing music.

Aseul's song is nice.

Kinda wanted to save TV till the last possible moment, but if all these other journalists can put out their TV lists now then so can I!

zbq5VWt.png

Love & Hip Hop: New York, Miami & Hollywood (VH1)

Some people's trash TV is literal dumpster fires like Netflix' Insatiable, or some corny comedy. My trash TV is Love & Hip Hop. This year served lots of unnecessary high school-esque drama from Hip Hop has-beens/affiliates. Juelz Santana's moving dentures, Ray J's ever shifting hat, Joe Budden having erectile dysfunction have all served as black twitter memes and I loved every second of it.

The Chi (Showtime)

I didn't get to finish this but I liked what I did see. Anything with Jason Mitchell as a lead is always worth watching. :heart2:

My Brilliant Friend (HBO)

Something else I didn't finish but really liked what I did see, with powerful performances and dramatic music choices.

Skam Austin (Facebook Watch)

Really this was nearly a cut & paste remake of the Norwegian classic known as Skam, but I still enjoyed it. It also features the most "this character is literally me" character of 2018!

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Amazon)

I am quite fond of this show for reasons I don't know. Her standup is terrible but I like following the lives of these characters. I did have some gripes this season about the tone deaf joke Midge Maisel does but virtually nobody pointed it out lol. I still have an episode left but I don't think this would crack my list even watching to completion.

Sharp Objects (HBO)

I didn't finish this mainly because I lost interest, meanwhile with the others it was due to time. I'll definitely get back to it early next year but I wasn't seeing what everyone else was after a while. I think the term style over substance is overused, but it applies to this show. Without the southern gothic style, this show isn't much different from anything else. The Girlfriend Experience S1 outsold.

Corporate (Comedy Central)

If you've ever had a mundane desk job this show is your worst nightmare in the best way possible. S1 had kinks but I'm sure S2 will step up in all the right ways. Love the shots it takes at immoral corporations.

This Close (Sundance)

A very sweet show about 2 deaf best friends, this dramadey was a joy to watch. I hate that they made Matt Saracen the "bad boyfriend" but he was great in the role!

Who Is America? (Showtime)

Sacha Baron Cohen is kind of a genius, but this show was a mixed bag. I disagree with the criticism that this type of humor doesn't work in out current political climate, and I found the show humorous. It just overall felt like something was missing. I'd like to see Sacha return to television in the future though.

Silicon Valley (HBO)

Still better than Veep so suck it haters. A solid season overall, and while the development of the relationships between the characters is better than ever, the plotting is stagnant. But hey the boys finally have some success so maybe it'll change!

Homecoming (Amazon)

Look... I like Sam Esmail but the writers of this show had no idea what they were doing. The direction & cinematography are the best things about it, and that's not a good thing. This meatless Thriller left me rather cold and came across too self-indulgent. Plus Julia's performance was dry (unpopular opinion) and the rate she kept getting outshined I'm not sure how she's getting buzz.

Santa Clarita Diet (Netflix)

Most improved show of the year goes to SCD, which went from a rather mediocre first season to a very enjoyable yet messy second season. I'll def be returning for season three and so should anyone else who fancies campy horror-comedy.

Ash vs Evil Dead (Starz)

I'm ****ing pissed this was canceled. I didn't actually get around to S3 yet but I loved S1 & liked S2. The Evil Dead story is officially over, and Bruce Campbell confirmed he's never playing the character again. So **** off Starz. It was true to the spirit of Evil Dead and a joy to watch. I'm NOT here for Horror television shows like Hannibal + Ash vs Evil Dead getting canceled all the time.

Speechless (ABC)

Malcolm In The Wheelchair is still pretty good, but I've been inconsistent in following it do I can't officially put it on my list.

Get the **** off My Dick... a #relatable bop

Can't say I'm very familiar with the other songs. :dies: FJM's album this year was significantly better than Pure Comedy but it didn't stick with me. Also liked that Dream Wife album but never revisited. Get Up 10 is pretty good too but I didn't care for most of IOP album tracks tbh.

Posted (edited)

Not familiar with most of these nn (the songs) :rip: Lemme save tho.

I don't play IOP as much as i used to but anyway, i'm glad she's finding some success!

Aside from its many inconsistencies, i agree that Maisel only had like one solid stand up this season. But damn that show brings me so much joy i don't care :jonny: Props to the Palladinos, they did some brilliant work this year and Hader can stay mad...

Both This Close and Corporate have potential of being great next year so i'm excited to see where they're headed.

You're right abt Homecoming! So far sounds like all the attention is on Julia and she was just okay, definitely not the best part abt it

Maybe you made some points about Sharp Objects, since even i couldn't find much to write about it,  and yet i really liked the show. I think the final payoff is worth the watch (something a lot of critics apparently don't agree on)

Quote

Hmm... i mean the show came and went, it's not like it had any value aside from the recent headline (which would've been a much more interesting direction than trolling politicians)

I love Santa Clarita Diet...Netflix makes it hard to watch their originals since they're like a thousand of them. Glad I stumbled on this Season 1.
