Wicked Posted December 11, 2018 Posted December 11, 2018 (edited) 2018: The year of cancel culture, Peak TV dipping, Trumpette buffoonery, artist vs. the art debates, forgettable pop "stars" & journalism falling apart at the seams. Welcome to my best of! Where I'll be counting down my favorite stuff from the year. I didn't get to as many albums/shows as I wanted --since it was a pretty hectic year-- but I still got it in. Truthfully, this year has been all over the place. I'll get more into all the bad **** later. Top 20 Albums Top 40 Songs Top 5 Extended Plays Top 30 Television Shows (+performers/episodes) Top 5 Books Top 10 Films Worst of 2018 (music, tv, film, culture) I'll be getting started with the main lists in 1-2 weeks, but my worst list will be starting soon. Special thanks to @Clytemnestra for the banner Edited January 19, 2019 by Wicked
Hallucinogen Posted December 11, 2018 Posted December 11, 2018 I hope to discover new music and maybe shows thru this because I am so terribly behind !
Tom Vercetti Posted December 11, 2018 Posted December 11, 2018 ??? Excited for the worst stuff draggings.
Pink Matter Posted December 11, 2018 Posted December 11, 2018 Y'all are really killing with the graphics, huh? Excited for the music!
Wicked Posted December 11, 2018 Author Posted December 11, 2018 DJ Khaled - No Brainer (feat. Justin Bieber, Chance the Rapper & Quavo) I'm The One wasn't good in the first place, what made them think I'm the One 2.0 was gonna do something? Bieber sounds annoying, the rap verses are forgettable, the video was terrible.. I'm not sure what the goal was here. Chance the Plant Rapper claims he don't care about hits but it seems to me he's chasing them worse than Drake. Justin thinking he was doing something with those riffs/runs in the outro is probably the worst part Ella Mai - Own It When you sample the classics, you have to do them justice. Ella did not, so she made it to this list. It's so lifeless & boring I'm not sure what the point was. To get R&B heads to peep this album? Eminem - Killshot Eminem, to be blunt, hasn't made a good song in close to 10 years. Nowadays, he's busy responding to the likes to Machine Gun Kelly with bars about how he's more successful & rich. This is kinda pathetic and all shatters his image of being this guy that doesn't care for success, since it's the only thing he can mention in this song. All those celebrities on Jimmy Iovine's payola praising this when it dropped like it isn't horsesh*t Machine Gun Kelly - Rap Devil ...All that being said, this isn't much better (but it IS better than Killshot, at least), filled with commentary that has been said about Eminem the last few years on social media, but delivered poorly, this is just bad. I mean, I appreciate a diss song as much as the next person but... Still, slightly more listenable with some semi-memorable bars ("The big bad bully of the rap game can't take a ****ing joke", "I already ****ed one rappers girl this week, don't make me call Kim"), I also give some slight points for anyone going directly after Em since everyone seems to be afraid to. Too bad MGK is a terrible rapper/artist etc,. Justin Timberlake - Filthy "Freeak" is a fine song, not sure why JT tried to copy it since it's a failure. Interesting production but the rest of the song is cringeworthy; just like HT's career post FS/LS. If you're gonna quote memes maybe you should do it when they're fresh, instead of a year later. Tom MacDonald - Whiteboy lmao. R. Kelly - I Admit What was the point of releasing a 19 minute song titled 'I Admit' only for you really to not admit anything other than things we already know + disturbing fan accounts? This attempt to put a cap on the controversy with zero accountability, trying to get sympathy is annoying above everything else. 19 minutes of gaslighting is unbelievable. This is like a lost episode of The Boondocks or something, it's so absurd I'm still perplexed that it actually exists. Lyrics aside, it sounds like a type of club banger that Ty $ or another one of Roberts musical children might have made but the lyrics exist so here it is. Kodak Black - Heart Break Kodak Lykke Li - So Sad So Sexy Shawn Mendes - Shawn Mendes I don't hate Shawn Mendes at all, I mean his music isn't insufferable but you can just replace him with any other dude with a guitar who likes Ed Sheeran. He listed a lot of artists I like for this albums' influences, so I took a listen. Not sure why he was listing people like Kanye and JT when this is still boring ass guitar boy music. even Charlie Puth --whom I've dragged endlessly-- managed to show some type of evolution from basic banal ****. This is dudes third album Not sure why everyone is obsessed with him if he's delivering stuff like this. Migos - Culture II Culture was actually nice, not sure what went wrong for them to deliver this monotonous piece of garbage. Other than the immaculate Stir Fry thanks to Pharrell.... They should've scrapped this. J. Cole - KOD Another bad J. Cole album except it's worse than his previous efforts. For all the hate Sideline Story gets, it's still his best album. Let's stop calling Cole top 3. Some additional notes Scorpion isn't here because I know it's terrible, so I didn't bother listening. Same thing with Sweetener. I like YG too much to put him here but Stay Dangerous was diarrhea. SZA is still a terrible artist. Barbie Tingz is garbage. That 1975 album is bull****. Young Thug kinda fell off. Courtney Barnett is still one of the worst artists of the decade. The Weeknd has been rewriting the same song since BBTM. FJM is stale now. Childish Gambimo still only has 2 good songs, this year hasn't changed that. xo. The Good Place (NBC) @Maddox dragged it better than I could, but this season of The Good Place removed everything that made it the unique, must watch television it was in its previous two seasons. They --seemingly-- purposefully stunted the growth of the main cast to focus on Kristen Bell's character, which was such a poor choice. They made Jason into a parody of himself, removed the stakes, and turned into a pretty dull version of it's previous seasons. Not sure why its being praised when it was boring as all hell most of the time. Mayans M.C. (FX) I'm a fan of Sons of Anarchy, so of course I'd check out the prequel focusing on the Mayans MC biker gang. Well... It's not good? Structurally it follows SOA too closely to really make an impact or set its own tone, and has all the problems of the final season of SOA. That mixture is never good for a debut season. I couldn't finish the season, it was a big waste of time. Maybe I'll return to it to see if it picked up eventually. The Bobby Brown Story (BET) This foolishness after The New Edition Story was sad above everything else. Rushed, didn't make any sense & spent too much time focused on Whitney Houston. Woody was great as Bobby, and did well carrying this on his shoulders. The one thing that managed to get twitter buzzing was Bobby Brown insinuating that Janet Jackson & her family are colorist. When the most talked about thing in your biopic is another celebrity that the signs of a failure. Thirteen Reason Why (Netflix) Okay... I only watched one episode but that was enough, I ended up reading the recaps for the rest of the season and... This **** show should've been over with season one. What was the point? Drag me for being a "SJW!!1!" but displaying horrifying events in a television show with no point and directing it with the carelessness that Netflix has should be grounds for cancellation alone. Controversy at the expense of writing is the never the wave. The End of The F***ing World (Netflix) This Tumblr'd mess was cringe from beginning to end. While it was easy and rather quick to watch, I didn't like what I saw. The romantization of mentally illness is one of the worst things visual media has brought to light this decade. It doesn't help that both leads are annoying, and with no reason to care about them I never cared about the show. In typical Netflix fashion, they've renewed what was supposed to be a miniseries for a second season. I will NOT be returning because my eyeballs had enough. Additional Notes Thankfully due to lack of time, I didn't end up watching so much garbage this year! The only bad movie I actually watched this year was Venom, which doesn't even deserve a picture or write up. It sucked ass. Tom Hardy/Riz Ahmed are awesome but... Culturally, the major thing to discuss really is Trump being an embarrassment. But I think that's been beat to death. Hope all the Americans voted in November; I know I did. On top of that, this new rush of selective outrage is annoying. 95% of entertainers have worked with somebody messy (or worse) or are messy (or worse) themselves. If you're not "cancelling" everybody than calm down, don't give them any coins and keep it moving. Oh, and please stop listening to P*st M*lone. See y'all in 1-2 weeks for the official lists!!
theblackestday Posted December 11, 2018 Posted December 11, 2018 (edited) end those talentless hags! Edited December 11, 2018 by theblackestday
Tom Vercetti Posted December 11, 2018 Posted December 11, 2018 You kinda saved me from doing a worst of with these song lists cuz most of those would've been on mine. Em vs MGK was just.. embarrassing. Nothing productive got done. No Originality was just a rehashed flop. Filthy's production deserved better for sure. I Admit & Whiteboy Lykke's attempt at alt r&b was kinda laughable and nothing about it is really genuine. Shawn has 0 good songs. If it wasn't for his "looks" and the quest of trying to out him then atrl wouldn't pay him any attention. Culture 2 was too long and pointless for its own good, and yeah Cole's album game remains weak.
smholiv Posted December 11, 2018 Posted December 11, 2018 some of these worst of music choices that i am THANKFUL i've never heard of...

Funny how Lykke went from people gassing her up as artist of a generation to a total afterthought, poor that. Agreed with that Shawn assessment & Cole's career is just extremely sad. He's been skating off of potential for 8 years now. 41 minutes ago, minho said: some of these worst of music choices that i am THANKFUL i've never heard of... Vilppu Posted December 11, 2018 Posted December 11, 2018 i really like the shade of lykke album not even getting a word for description, it does not deserve a word. and to think wounded rhymes and i never learn are among my favourite albums of the decade... sad
Reverie Posted December 11, 2018 Posted December 11, 2018 (edited) QUEEN!!! I don't disagree with anything except YG Stay Dangerous wasn't the worst thing ever I'm planning on seeing him in Toronto this February with my friend I always forget it's 2018 and people still love Cole cuz I try to ignore him but wtf!! People really be like "don't tell me xxx wasn't a legend when he was respected by legends like Kanye, Kendrick, and JCole" and then I forget to even be annoyed about xxx Edited December 11, 2018 by Reverie
potent Posted December 11, 2018 Posted December 11, 2018 I can't understand why people actually like Shawn Mendes Post Malone is trash too.
SLIME Posted December 11, 2018 Posted December 11, 2018 Not sure I'm aboard the Ella Mai train. Anyway I forgot about all that Justin song I don't think it's the worst thing ever but... Lykke's album sucked. Quote Eminem, to be blunt, hasn't made a good song in close to 10 years. ✅✅✅ Quote Other than the immaculate Stir Fry thanks to Pharrell ✅✅✅✅✅

Felt like his radio album when he was sneakily dropping cohesive concept albums up until that point. He's a very fun show though enjoy!! 21 minutes ago, potent said: I can't understand why people actually like Shawn Mendes Post Malone is trash too. As previously mentioned, it's probably his "looks" but you can't hear someones appearance while listening to their music. Yeah, P*st was always bad but I really need him to fade into irrelevancy. His popularity makes no sense. 18 minutes ago, Kang. said: I'm not sure I'm aboard the Ella Mai train. Anyway I forgot about all that Justin song I don't think it's the worst thing ever but...
