ultraviolence.xx Posted December 13, 2018 Author Posted December 13, 2018 now, let's review my top 10 songs, shall we? i don't have the patience to make an updated list, so i'll just comment on the old rankings. 10. Sufjan Stevens – "Visions of Gideon" still one of my favorite sufjan songs of all time. "mystery of love" can CHOKE. well, maybe not choke, considering i like it too, but... a grammy nomination? it's what "visions" deserves. 9. Lana Del Rey/Radiohead – "Get Free" i've basically ignored lust for life since the turn of the year, sooooo... this will be interesting. this is a lovely song, though, with lovely sentiments about her future that it appears she hasn't really followed through on, if "happiness is a butterfly" is any indication. love the ambience at the end the most, i think. 8. The xx – "Replica" this is a great song. let me give it a cute stream. probably my favorite xx song — i love the interaction between the shuffle of jamie's beat and the dreaminess of romy's guitar line and oliver's sexy deep bass voice. and something about that steel-drum-laden post-chorus stabs me right in the feels. 7. The National – "Dark Side of the Gym" i've only listened to this a few times since the new year but it stirs me emotionally every time. a deserving top 10 pick in my book. 6. Slowdive – "Slomo" whew. probably my second-most-played song here, since the new year. i love how it earns every one of its seven runtime minutes. my favorite part is rachel at the end with the indecipherable but beautiful vocals. 5. Lana Del Rey / A$AP Rocky / Playboi Carti – "Summer Bummer" still KNOCKS. god, i need more lana and boi-1da (and i guess A$AP can join if he wants). 4. Lana Del Rey – "Best American Record" not gonna lie, i keep laughing at the "cool as heck" line, so i don't listen to this much. but the rest of it does have a very near, dear place in my heart. 3. The National – "Guilty Party" whew. i remember i read an entire book (cat's eye by margaret atwood) listening to this song on one-repeat. i can't think of the book without thinking of the song. i can't think of the song without thinking of the book. 2. Big Thief – "Shark Smile" easily the song i've played most since 2017 ended. what a ****ing song. deserved #1! 1. Lana Del Rey – "Love" ...when was the last time i listened to this in full? couldn't tell ya. enough time had gone by to where it felt fresh again, but not enough for it to continue to feel fresh after the listen was over. in retrospect, this can be moved down a few dozen spots.
ATRL Moderator Tsareena Posted December 13, 2018 ATRL Moderator Posted December 13, 2018 lana did THAT. the love slander will not be taken
Eeveelution Posted December 13, 2018 Posted December 13, 2018 I like all the songs in your top 10. Order needs work tho
theblackestday Posted December 13, 2018 Posted December 13, 2018 well you know my thots on love, so i'm glad we agree it should move a few dozen spots visions of gideon, get free, summer bummer, shark smile
Roberto Posted December 13, 2018 Posted December 13, 2018 I love to see a lot of Lana on this set. And Love topping the chart, just like my chart, the last year. The shade to Get Free...too much to handle.
Pink Matter Posted December 13, 2018 Posted December 13, 2018 4 Lana songs? Her mind ugh it amazes me sometimes Replica and Slomo were also nice songs too!
Bubble Tea Posted December 13, 2018 Posted December 13, 2018 "Love" is such a boring song - like name, like song I guess. thank u, next.
volition Posted December 13, 2018 Posted December 13, 2018 i have to agree, love is the worst song of all time.
TheWayWeWere Posted December 13, 2018 Posted December 13, 2018 I've barely listen LFL since last year too tbh Born to Die has more scrobbles this year than LFL Best American Record is so good, still can't believe this bitch cancelled it Summer Bummer > Love

Blue Rose Posted December 13, 2018 Posted December 13, 2018 Visions Of Gideon is indeed better than Mystery Of Love. The National dominating
World Eater Posted December 13, 2018 Posted December 13, 2018 No Mary? But yeah, Visions of Gideon is one of Suf's finest
fossora Posted December 14, 2018 Posted December 14, 2018 Quote 9. Lana Del Rey/Radiohead – "Get Free" ...so anyways, I don't like ur songs list and I'm gonna leave it at that
Temporal Posted December 15, 2018 Posted December 15, 2018 ddd at all the Lana from last year I only really used Love
ultraviolence.xx Posted December 17, 2018 Author Posted December 17, 2018 my mental health has NOT been the tea so this might be cancelledT. maybe i’ll just do a diarrhoea-esque update. don’t know
ultraviolence.xx Posted December 20, 2018 Author Posted December 20, 2018 the high-functioning is jumping out today, so let's get going with albums! i made my lists shorter this year because i didn't want to **** around with padding my lists with stuff i didn't actually use. 2018 ALBUMS: HONORARY MENTIONS (sorted alphabetically) – kendrick lamar, et al.: the black panther soundtrack i'll be honest: most of the reason this album is here is "king's dead," which—spoilers for my song list—is probably my favorite hip-hop song of the year. i start there, play it seventeen times or so, and then loop through the rest of the album. though it's no DAMN. or butterfly, low-functioning kendrick is still pretty damn good. – boygenius: boygenius EP i didn't love any of the members' solo material (save for phoebe bridgers, whose first LP is halfway to wonderful), but there's something about them melding together that i really love. maybe it's because most of their individualities melt away into an archetypal, yet not anodyne indie-rock sound. maybe it's because six songs is a perfect introduction: long enough to give us a sense of how they function together, long enough for each of their personalities to rear its head a time or two, but not long enough to feel like a slog. – christina aguilera: liberation a surprise? maybe. (especially after that disaster of a first single, one of the many things midas west touched this year and turned to ****.) but i thought this was a pretty solid pop album. (keep in mind the version i use is ten tracks, cut from the standard's fifteen.) i like the contributions from MNEK and julia michaels, the reggae lilt of "right moves," the francis-and-the-lights-and-cashmere-cat lovechild that is "masochist." – julia holter: aviary let me preface with the obvious: this album is a beast. it's ninety minutes of complexity, shirking comprehensible structure, actively trying to be indigestible. and it succeeds on all of those fronts: it succeeds in pushing listeners away. but if those listeners are willing to fight their way in, they'll find something worthwhile. – janelle monáe: dirty computer this is my first time at the janelle monáe rodeo, so i'm not able to analyze this album within the rest of her oeuvre. the overwhelming critical praise surprised me, but i didn't think it was completely undeserved. is it overrated? maybe a bit. but is it an absolute dumpster fire? no. i love the prince-pastiche "make me feel" and have even come around to the grimes-assisted "pynk." my one absolute no is the song with the feature from P-word (surprise, i know). – let's eat grandma: i'm all ears i considered snubbing this entirely, because i didn't really use it all that much after the first couple weeks, but there are some moments here that are too special to go undiscussed. though on the whole i find their swelteringly-cool schtick a little suffocating, some songs stuck with me: "i will be waiting," an updated eighties slow-jam; the SOPHIE-drenched "hot pink"; the sublime "falling into me"; the ethereal jam just before the seven-minute mark of "cool & collected." i wish i liked this more as a whole. – ride: tomorrow's shore EP white men! am i right? these are cuts from last year's gorgeous weather diaries, and unlike some reunions, which make me excited about the band's past, these songs make me marvelously excited for the band's future. my favorite, of course, is the feverish closer, "catch you dreaming." – s. carey: hundred acres this album, holistically, was a letdown after the incredible first single "fool's gold." it's a bit too vanilla, a bit too i-love-nature-so-much-i-think-about-it-when-i-***, in the smooth folk tradition of early bon iver (the band he's a part of). there are some wonderful moments, though: that first single i mentioned earlier; and the closer, "meadow song," which swells to an unforgettable orchestral climax. – teyana taylor: KTSE mr. west did a lil something here (though he still ultimately ****ed it up by making it adhere to his montana short-album tradition, trimming the songs and cutting extras). this album helped me realize just how captivating teyana's voice is: whether she's singing about a three-way on the aptly-titled "3way" or imploring a lover to wait up for her until she gets home on "gonna love me" or ...moaning... on "hurry," i'm glued to her stories. the only song i'm not sold on is WTP, which feels like a strange veer left at the end of the album. – tinashe: joyride this album got a lot of flack upon release, but there's a lot to love here: the minimalist ambient club track that lurches behind her glitching vocals on "faded love"; the fenty-beauty swagger of the title track; the slow waltz of "salt"; the nelly-sampling R&B candy of "ooh la la." (i still firmly believe that would've smashed on urban radio.) that's all for today!
Eeveelution Posted December 20, 2018 Posted December 20, 2018 I hope you're doing ok sis! Fair hms overall, I like most of them and there's only one really that deserves better.
