Eeveelution Posted December 19, 2018 Author Posted December 19, 2018 (edited) 25. Lily Allen - "Higher" From: No Shame A single from June’s underrated No Shame, Higher is a downtempo reflection on the often abusive power dynamics between artist and record label. Lily is a skilled enough songwriter so that the lyrics can easily be interpreted as being directed at an abusive partner too. This is one of those songs where I can’t quite explain exactly why I like it so much; there’s just something enthralling about this that has drawn me back for countless listens.. See also: "Apples" ; "Pushing Up Daisies" 24. Amber Mark - "All the Work" From: Conexão Amber Mark had a pretty great year in 2018 as she released her acclaimed EP, Conexão. Of course, it wasn’t always this way for her, and All the Work is a classic songwriter’s tale scolding someone who suddenly remembers her number now she's the next big thing. Musically, the song lulls you into a false sense of security with a verse that sounds not unlike the rest of the EP, before quickly switching to a chorus that is few BPM away from a house banger. An exciting potential direction for her debut album for sure. See also: "Love Me Right" 23. Soccer Mommy - "Your Dog" From: Clean There can be 100 indie rock artists in the room and 99 don’t make good music, but I had this one incredible talent with me! There can be 100 bad Snail Mail songs in a year… maybe there are right now, but all you need is just for one person to make you believe that female indie rock isn’t dead...! I probably said this earlier, but there could be 100 people or 1000 people making indie rock, 9,000 or 999 have zero talent, but one does and this best of would not be here without her. ❤️ 22. Haru Nemuri - "rock 'n' roll wa shinanai" From: Haru to Shura A highlight from Japanese rocker Haru Nemuri’s bratty, brilliant debut, Haru to Shura, "Rock 'n' roll" serves as a real victory lap for the record. A deceptively lowkey beginning quickly shape-shifts into a screaming match call-and-response duet in what is one of the most satisfying progressions of any song I’ve heard this year. The title translates to "rock 'n' roll won't die" and with artists like Haru around we can be sure of that. See also: "nineteen" ; "MAKE MORE NOISE OF YOU" 21. Amen Dunes - "Believe" From: Freedom Believe is a pretty crushing song even if you didn’t know that it was written by Amen Dunes’ Damon MacMahon after his mother’s cancer diagnosis. The song ambles along for near six minutes on some of the most beautiful guitar lines I’ve heard all year, Amen Dunes sounding like’s making his stream-of-consciousness lyrics up along the way. Unpolished sure, all the more impactful for it. See also: "Freedom" Edited December 19, 2018 by Eeveelution

ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 20, 2018 ATRL Moderator Posted December 20, 2018 You should have chosen a different Harunemuri song, that's like the 4th or 6th best on the album Glad to see her on mutiple lists though. All the Work is the best choice, yes. Agree with your assessment 100% I didn't like Soccer Mommy but at least I listened to her album unlike SM.
Sbbmsve Posted December 20, 2018 Posted December 20, 2018 I loved Higher, it should’ve been a hit. Lily’s relationship with her label was so weird this era . Like No Shame was barely promoted. I didn’t like Amen Dunes’ new album but Believe was a great song. And what do we do with your list? We STAN.... STAN.... now WIG..
TheWayWeWere Posted December 20, 2018 Posted December 20, 2018 Higher stanning it's such a great chill bop should've been her big single
Eeveelution Posted December 20, 2018 Author Posted December 20, 2018 (edited) 20. Azealia Banks - "Anna Wintour" From: I- 2018 was all about separating the art from the artist for me. This was nowhere more evident than Azealia, whose partially-entertaining, partially-vile conveyor belt of e-headlines continued to overshadow her mostly solid musical output. Azealia is... troubled, but honestly she could stab me and burn down my house and I would still bop to this song. Anna Wintour takes all of the best parts of Banks’s music: bouncy hip-house production, irresistibly sticky hooks, that weird foghorn thing she does with her verse toward the middle, to craft an unexpected artist re-peak for her. So yeah, hopefully she doesn’t quit the day job and become a full time *** soap saleswoman cause an album full of these would be ideal. See also: "Treasure Island" 19. Julia Holter - "Why Sad Song" From: Aviary After the overwhelming everything and the kitchen sink-ness of Aviary, the subdued, ambient Why Sad Song feels like a natural closer to the record. What I find interesting about this smasha is that, while the vocal melody remains similar throughout the song, there is a gradual instrumental buildup that is very satisfying. Obviously it wouldn’t be Julia song without a convoluted background story – the song is apparently a “phonetic transcription of “Kyema Mimin” by Nepalese Buddhist nun Ani Choying Drolma & jazz musician Steve Tibbetts,”. And what about it? See also: "Les Jeux to You" ; "I Shall Love 2" 18. Tirzah - "Gladly" From: Devotion Love songs are obviously a dated concept in 2018, and Gladly is perhaps the most obvious love song on an album of “straight-up love songs”. However, it never feels reductive because Tirzah is not one to do things by the book. Everything about the song is just a little off in a way that I like. The production is very garageband-chic with a hypnotic drum beat and a piano line that sounds like it was recorded underwater. Tirzah her lyrics are quite basic on paper and vocally it’s like girl find the note, but she still sells it thanks to her immense talent. See also: "Fine Again" ; "Say When" 17. Ariana Grande - "sweetener" From: sweetener Perhaps I’m getting old, but to me pop has never sounded so… homogeneous. An Ed Sheeran’d guitar riff here, a malnourished tropical house drop there, all blending into a spotify playlist stew of mediocrity. But then came Ariana and Pharrell to shake things up. The individual elements here aren’t so unique: the sentimental pop soul ballad, the post-Migos mumble rap, Pharrell’s incessant adlibs. But together they make something truly special. It shouldn’t work, and maybe to a lot of y’all it doesn’t, but at least you won’t be hearing anything else like this on TTH. See also: "successful" ; "no tears left to cry" 16. Let's Eat Grandma - "Donnie Darko" From: I'm All Ears Girl we going to Norwich! Rosa Walton and Jenny Hollingworth, the duo behind Let’s Eat Grandma, are never content to just write a normal pop song. They love to twist their music into unexpected and surprisingly satisfying directions, which is no better highlighted than on I’m All Ears’ ambitious closer. For 11 minutes the duo take the scenic route across 80s synthpop, glittery disco, fuzzy psychedelia and… you get the picture. I never knew how much I needed an 11-minute song entitled Donnie Darko in my life but here we are. See also: "Ava" ; "Falling into Me" Edited December 20, 2018 by Eeveelution

ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 20, 2018 ATRL Moderator Posted December 20, 2018 Sweetener has the best chorus of the year. The EXPLOSION of QUALITY. AHHH its's such a shame many people don't understand it. The CORRECT LEG choice too. I was expecting... not that after the weak 9 minute track too! Anna Wintour is good, interesting Julia choice too.
