prézli Posted December 16, 2018 Posted December 16, 2018 No Contest is cute, but not as good as Salt. The only song I like from Caution is GTFO (and Giving Me Life, maybe).
Tom Vercetti Posted December 16, 2018 Posted December 16, 2018 No Contest seems to be a near consensus standout on Joyride. I tried the Rae Morris album and I’m not sure if it was her vocals but there wasn’t anything special about her to remember. Elegance
World Eater Posted December 16, 2018 Posted December 16, 2018 Bopmaker Jessie Ware is the best Jessie Ware, and that's that on that. Comeback Kid was definitely NOT what I expected from Sharon, too bad the other single wasn't iT. I'm still curious about the album, though, I have a recording of her live show where she debuted tons of new material saved somewhere but I haven't gotten around to listening to that yet. Time Today, The Distance and Wow
potent Posted December 16, 2018 Posted December 16, 2018 Hunger is a great song despite disappointing album I need to listen to Mariah’s album though.
Kingie Posted December 16, 2018 Posted December 16, 2018 Overtime and Egoist are cute. The Distance was a pleasant surprise, idk if it's recency bias talking but I'd call it one of her best songs ever. I didn't check out the full KKB EP(?) but I liked Only Acting. I feel like No Contest was the least awful song on Joyride but I didn't particularly...like it.
ATRL Moderator Unoriginal Posted December 16, 2018 ATRL Moderator Posted December 16, 2018 Hunger, Time Today, Overtime, The Distance, No Contest and PMTML the Rose Garden shoutout as well it's what it deserves
Eeveelution Posted December 16, 2018 Author Posted December 16, 2018 Update coming momentarily, this one is for all my folk girlies 21 hours ago, Vilppu said: omg i love elegance and clicked on yt link to listen but it took me to egoist, i feel SCAMMED the distance, wow and push me to my limit are all great songs and no contest/salt are only for those who desperately wanted to like something from that sad excuse of an album ^-^ Oh my mistake... stan LOONA You;re not wrong, BUT they are still great songs x 14 hours ago, Pink Matter said: Yeah this second set was much more my speed! No Contest, Push Me to My Limit (kinda crazy how sis got lost in the sauce this year ), and Elegance are all dope The way Tinashe knows how to craft a hit and just can't seem to release them never ceases to amaze me. Young Fathers really never did much for me the acclaim they got seemed baffling. I might listen to it again at some point to see if my opinion changes though. Imo young fathers album is a grower, and I feel like there are enough different genres there that you would at least like a couple of tracks. 13 hours ago, theblackestday said: I Time Today is kinda KKB's best song huh? I love how Mariah suddenly won over not only pop stans but also indieheauxs, her mind... Rae Morris a fad Yes it is! the slander earlier.. Yeah I noticed that... Carly Rae is shaking. Yeah I'm always hesitent when an artist has an extensive discography, but I really think it is one of her best. They released both an album and EP this year! If you like Only Acting you' might like them since the songs are in a similar style. 58 minutes ago, Unoriginal said: Hunger, Time Today, Overtime, The Distance, No Contest and PMTML the Rose Garden shoutout as well it's what it deserves At one point Rose Garden was like SOTY material. Still great but PMTML outsold in the long run.
Eeveelution Posted December 16, 2018 Author Posted December 16, 2018 (edited) 30. Yubin - "Lady" From: N/A A big bop as the kids say. Lady never fully goes for the Big Pop Chorus, instead just cruising along with its retro, Plastic Love-recalling charm. That’s not to say this isn’t catchy though, and the song’s chorus will have even the most aggressive of K-pop haters singing along. The use of retro sounds and influences will help this to age better than a lot of 10s pop methinks. See also: "Game Over" ; Sunmi - "Black Pearl" 29. Jessica Pratt - "This Time Around" From: Quiet Signs Jessica Pratt reminds us that, even in 2018, sometimes all it takes to make a perfect song is voice and guitar. It’s a cliché, but This Time Around sounds like something you would uncover in your parents’ record collection, or something that could have been uncovered from their parents' record collection. Her psychedelia-drenched folk music has always intrigued me, but this song is the fullest realisation of talents thus far, while standing as one of late 2018’s best singles. 28. Haley Heynderickx - "The Bug Collector" From: I Need to Start a Garden Folk is a genre that lives and dies with its lyrics, something that Haley Heydnerickx obviously understands. Her songwriting is simple yet evocative, as on this highlight from I Need to Start a Garden. Haley recounts trying to go about her day with her loved one as they are constantly thwarted by some pesky little critters: an angry millipede, a praying mantis that may-or-may-not be a priest. Of course, It’s left to listener to interpret exactly what these pests represent but you can’t help but root for her on her quest to attain “the perfect evening”. See also: "No Face"; "Untitled God Song" 27. Troye Sivan - "My My My!" From: Bloom Storytime: when I was like 15 I honestly had such a crush on Troye Sivan and tbh his coming out video really inspired me to come out myself. Flash-forward some years and I’m only into guys like 20 years older than me, and just kinda rooting for him from afar rather than actively following his music. That changed with January’s My My My! an irresistible synth-bop that just emanates desire. Idk who let this twink snap so hard, but I’m thankful. I also love the video where’s he’s just strutting around with p0rn stars and living his best life. See also: Charli XCX & Troye Sivan - "1999" ; "Strawberries & Cigarettes" 26. MGMT - "Me and Michael" From: Little Dark Age Apparently this was originally titled “Me and My Girl”. imagine how corny that would have been, I- They made the right choice in changing it to something a little more ambiguous. Anyway, this is the by far the best execution of the 80s synthpop nostalgia that MGMT were aiming for on Little Dark Age. The duo struck melodic gold with some of the best pop songwriting I’ve heard all year, and the backing vocals are an inspired choice too. Some may say it was a fluke and they are talentless, but at least this song is a smash. Edited December 19, 2018 by Eeveelution
ATRL Moderator Tsareena Posted December 16, 2018 ATRL Moderator Posted December 16, 2018 idk how behind I am ff but still make me feel... such a great lead on your own amazing song... hunger overtime is such a bop... got me hype about Jessie Ware again Egoist a bop omg this 35 - 31 set literally back to back of bops... no contest whew a song.. elegance. kilo kish her mind! my my my
ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 16, 2018 ATRL Moderator Posted December 16, 2018 My boyfriend HATES LADY. He never asks to skip songs but will demand it when it comes on on shuffle Me and Michael is a bop, but not my fave on the album. The darker songs are better.
ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 16, 2018 ATRL Moderator Posted December 16, 2018 MMM! really did come out of nowhere, but there is a better song on the album that pretty much is the same formula lol.
ATRL Moderator Unoriginal Posted December 16, 2018 ATRL Moderator Posted December 16, 2018 my my my the see alsos are both choices tho
Tom Vercetti Posted December 16, 2018 Posted December 16, 2018 yubin There's a stronger cut than M&M on the 2nd half of their album.
TRF. Posted December 16, 2018 Posted December 16, 2018 Me and Michael one of their best songs EVER period!!!
Pink Matter Posted December 17, 2018 Posted December 17, 2018 MMM was a cute bop back in January but it get old pretty fast for me. Me and Michael is cute
Jet Posted December 17, 2018 Posted December 17, 2018 Imma let you finish but The Distance is one of the best songs of 2018
theblackestday Posted December 17, 2018 Posted December 17, 2018 Loved LDA but hate M&M beyond words, idk the others but that My My My! writeup is v sweet

Blue Rose Posted December 17, 2018 Posted December 17, 2018 Glad you finally got into Troye’s music. My My My is great but he has way better songs
Sbbmsve Posted December 17, 2018 Posted December 17, 2018 I found Me And My Michael extremely cheesy but again that was the point. I didn't expect to like Troye's new album this much, he really bringed some quality pop music. My My My! is just too catchy
Kingie Posted December 17, 2018 Posted December 17, 2018 I thought Black Pearl kinda put Lady to shame, I think the cruisy feel that you like is the reason Lady fell flat for me, I'm a basic ho for hooks. I think MMM was decent but it was overshadowed by Bloom for me.
Eeveelution Posted December 18, 2018 Author Posted December 18, 2018 (edited) thanks 4 replies however, it is not cute how literally everyone paid DUST to Haley and Jessica. Yeah, it's cute how they both served sophisti pop excellence this year. How do you know a blackpink song isn't topping it this year? Yeah, people (including myself) drag youtubers but honestly watching coming out vidyas was really helpful for me, having had no role models irl. 20 hours ago, Superpower said: Glad you finally got into Troye’s music. World Eater Posted December 18, 2018 Posted December 18, 2018 My and My Girls (feat. Gemma Collins) wouldn't be that corny, though! But they did make the right decision with replacing the lyrics This Time Around is my fav from this set
prézli Posted December 18, 2018 Posted December 18, 2018 I'm avoiding Troye. Idk why, he's not sympatico for me.
