40. Florence + the Machine - "Hunger"

From: High as Hope

nlynDAG.jpgHunger is classic Florence. You could say that she has not progressed artistically, yes, but there’s a comforting sense of familiarity here: the chorus punches like it should, the instruments rise and fall as you expect, the usual bells and whistles are are all present. Lyrically, I like that she drops the faux-deep ocean metaphors and gets real about her struggles with an eating disorder, affecting stuff.

39. Jessie Ware - "Overtime"

From: TBA

WrODex6.jpgJessie Ware isn’t just any mum, she’s a cool mum, and she's back to making bops! The acclaimed podcast host has thankfully discarded Glasshouse’s vanilla smooth FM aesthetic to reconnect with her house roots. We all know Jessie can sing, but here she chooses a more restrained approach, switching to a spoken delivery for the hook that works like a charm.

38. Kero Kero Bonito - "Time Today"

From: Time 'n' Place

sAF57gv.jpgKero Kero Bonito delivered a bevy of great singles in 2018, but this may be the best of them all. Time Today blends a bunch of influences; DIY-bedroom synthpop, Japanese city pop, that annoying advertising jingle you couldn’t get out of your head, to craft one of 2018’s most straightforwardly catchy songs. The song is just a little sad too, really nailing that nostalgic, bittersweet ~vibe for me. And of course, just like those best days that you never want to end, the two-minute track is over just a little too soon.

 See also: "Only Acting"; "Outside"

37. Sharon Van Etten - "Comeback Kid"

From: Remind Me Tomorrow

e6Uf0HZ.jpgSharon van Etten made a name for herself making intimate, “confessional” singer-songwriter music, peaking with 2014’s acclaimed Are We There. I feel like there was nowhere else to take that sound so I appreciate how she switched. Both this song and second single Jupiter 4 trade guitar and piano for new-wave-inspired electronics and some heavy drums. Comeback Kid in particular is an angry little firecracker of a song that proves that Sharon has lost none of talent for intense and vivid songwriting.  See also: "Jupiter 4"

4Qc7pcB.pngOVkay2E.png

36. LOONA / Olivia Hye - "Egoist" (feat. JinSoul)

From: Olivia Hye

xoySp4I.jpgOlivia Hye was the final of Loona’s twelve pre-debut single releases, and the phrase 'saving the best for last' feels appropriate here. I first came across this bop after it inexplicably rose to near the top of the singles chart on rateyourmusic. (yes I was late). Egoist is one of those classic ~love yourself anthems, but instead of taking this down the Jessie J’d trite ballad route, it’s an absolute banger with some bass-heavy production that will likely still sound ahead of its time a decade from now. See also: "Stylish" ; "Rosy"

Florence was uninteresting this year. She had opportunity to switch things up. Sharon’s “comeback” singles seems like non-events to me. Everything else is good. Overtime > Snoozehouse

ooooo, i'm here for jessie ware, get it queen.

She’s a sea witch. Leave her alone

im waiting for Jessie’s album to check out her new songs. I don’t have time to keep up with random singles

Time Today, really?

That's like the second weakest KKB song this year.

I'm glad you appreciate the best a/b side release by Loona this year :clap3:  Rosy is a little better but both songs on that are what their debut ep should have sounded like.

Overtime :clap3:

Hunger ?

Thank you all so much for the comments, especially those who take time to read my ramblings.

Next batch coming eventually, I have to say, it's my best one yet.

My fave set so far! MMF has been that bop since like April or whenever it got released. :clap3:

Hard Piano would not be my first choice off Daytona but it's still a good one. I much prefer the recommended songs lol

Same goes for On Your Own but I still like a lot.

And The Bamboo Princess is a SERVE. What a way to start off an album! Deserved to be higher though :'(

I also checked GTFOMD. It's okay. I much prefer the FM! songs to it so it's position as apt.

MMF has aged... better than the rest of Dirty Computer :-*

Maybe so, but almost top 40 still means its 10/10 for me.

The only LIZ I liked this year was Pandemonium and even then its underwhelming.  Poor girl will never match WIRTW!

Make Me Feel is great, but there are a few moments on the album that are just better.

WIRTW grew on me so much this year! Yes it's her classic.

Hard Piano, The Bamboo Princess :heart2:

I don't really see anything remotely 'left-field' about Lost and Found, and the "boring middle-of-the-road artist" comments are kinda valid, but I still liked the album and On Your Own is one of my faves too

Make Me Feel... great gowns, beautiful gowns

I mean, I think some of the production choices and sonic textures are very interesting compared to a lot of UK pop right now. Some of the **** that plays on the ratio here...

Glad that everyone agrees that Duck Duck  Goose is a career highlight (with Deepthroat obviously still being her best). GTFOMD unfortunately wasn't my thing and neither was FM! so I guess I'll just wait for Vince's next effort :thing: Doesn't Matter, Hard Piano and The Bamboo Princess are all CLASSICS :heart2:

Mouth open like i was at the dentist :jonny5:

 Yeah FM kinda sucks

Your Daytona highlights are unique.

I like MMF but I feel the album has better~

Bamboo Princess is solid and Jorja is still boring x.

Good unique I hope x

The first half of this sentence is true.

IA, but Hunger is special tbh, one of her best songs

I think most would agree cause I haven't seen much talk about them. I'm really perched for her album though.

I always liked her lyrics but by album 4 its like can you come up with something else.

Jessie is having a baby so it might be some time, may as well bop while you wait :-*

The audicity... Their worst this year are Swimming and If I'd Known.

I like Rosy a lot but Egoist's chorus just punches you know?

hunger is the only song off florence album i formed an opinion on but it's not a positive one sry. overtime is quite good, thank god it isn't glasshouse'd, i would have a meltdown. imo the awful awful awful breakdown after the first chorus and the """rap""" stop egoist from being anything more than decent but even if those were removed, it's just a little bit too slow to fully grab me. but it's kinda gloriously produced i have to say

Hunger remains my favorite from Flo that year :'( too bad HAH ends up being bad

Overtime is FLAWLESS :jonny: I need album full of disco melancholic bops NOW

Haven't heard any of the songs in this list (I may have heard Hunger but I completely disregarded Florence this entire year so I don't remember how that goes lol). Overtime and Comeback Kid sound interesting though! I'll check those out when I can.

I honestly didn't pay attention to Jessie Ware this year. I hope she can excite me next album whenever that happens. Kero Kero Bonito is another.

Hunger!

I remember giving Sharon a couple spins but completely forgot about that song :skull:

35. Mariah Carey - "The Distance" (feat. Ty Dolla $ign)

From: Caution

N1tJoRY.pngI’m the first to admit that I haven’t always been the biggest fan of Mariah’s music, but Caution was a step in the right direction for me. The Distance shines as the beating heart of the record. Slick synthpop production, cheerleader chants and a guest verse from Ty Dolla Sign could threaten to overshadow a lesser vocalist, but Mariah carries this with a certain effortless confidence that you can only earn by being a diva of her calibre. Here she talks about paying her critics no mind and you can’t not believe her.

34. Tinashe - "No Contest"

From: Joyride

26MiOZe.jpgJoyride was obviously not the album we all hoped it would be, but that doesn’t mean that Tinashe is a complete lost cause. No Contest is indeed catchy and accessible in a way that appeals to the GP, but crucially it manages to avoid sounding like a soulless writing camp exercise like a lot of her recent material does. The production is a highlight and Tinashe herself has rarely sounded more confident.

33. Young Fathers - "Wow"

From: Cocoa Sugar

ZjENx57.jpgOh wow...oh WOW!

Young Fathers are interesting in that they were described to me as a hip hop group but seem determined to make anything but traditional hip-hop. They are "genre agnostic" I guess. The very deadpan repetition of “everything so amazing / I said wow” is a mood, and I love how the track becomes increasingly unhinged throughout its run-time.  See also: "Tremolo" ; "Border Girl"

4Qc7pcB.pngOVkay2E.png

32. Rae Morris - "Push Me to My Limit"

From: Someone Out There

O85Dqly.jpgWhen you release an album in January you kind of have to go big or go home, and unfortunately Rae Morris was forgotten by most (including me). Nonetheless, Push Me To My Limit has remained one of the year’s strongest openers. I love how this song is just one continuous build; the ambiance of the instrumentation leaves plenty of space for Rae’s lyrics and what must be her least welcome to my kitchen’d vocal performance to date.  See also: "Rose Garden"

4Qc7pcB.pngOVkay2E.png

31. Kilo Kish - "Elegance"

From: mothe

HNzIMhH.jpgThe lead single from mothe and Kilo Kish her best track to date, Elegance has some of the strongest production I’ve heard all year. Elegance is less about the whole verse-chorus structure and is basically just made up of different hooks spliced across the track. You could say that the production carries the song but with a beat so good who can blame her? See also: "Void"

omg i love elegance and clicked on yt link to listen but it took me to egoist, i feel SCAMMED

the distance, wow and push me to my limit are all great songs and no contest/salt are only for those who desperately wanted to like something from that sad excuse of an album ^-^

Elegance is very good and yeah its good bc of the production, but she has one song thats better in the EP.

I liked Rae Morris' album the 2-3 times I heard it.  I don't remember that one though....

Yeah this second set was much more my speed! No Contest, Push Me to My Limit (kinda crazy how sis got lost in the sauce this year :priceless:), and Elegance are all dope :clap3:

The way Tinashe knows how to craft a hit and just can't seem to release them never ceases to amaze me.

Young Fathers really never did much for me :katie: the acclaim they got seemed baffling. I might listen to it again at some point to see if my opinion changes though.

I kinda hated Hunger at first but it ended up growing on me against my will? I'm still not a fan of the chorus at all, but everything else is very pretty. Still not big on the song though :)

Time Today is kinda KKB's best song huh?

I love how Mariah suddenly won over not only pop stans but also indieheauxs, her mind...

Any 2018 Tinashe song on a Best Of list, I have to laugh

Wow is...

Rae Morris a fad
