I’ll preface this by saying that, while 2018 was a pretty average year for albums, it was a very strong year for Eps. Though I didn’t listen to all that many, most that I did get a chance to listen to were pretty great, and I’m expecting big things from a lot of these artists next year. Here is part 1 of my EPs countdown x

12. Moses Sumney - Black in Deep Red, 2014

Genre(s): Art Pop

p3bfTiV.jpg Much like Moses Sumney’s excellent debut album, Aromanticism, Black in Deep Red, 2014 is concise and straight to the point. The 9-minute EP hints at an exciting new direction for the good sis, with closer Rank and File being is his most direct and aggressive track yet.  Preview: "Rank & File"

11. yuragi - Still Dreaming, Still Deafening

Genre(s): Shoegaze, Dream Pop

rZuyxqZ.jpg

yuragi are a Japanese shoegazing band that I stumbled upon recently and have not been able to get enough of. While there’s nothing here quite as engaging as Night is Young, the EP’s dreamy, unhurried atmosphere is impossible not to get lost in.  Preview: x

10. Kimbra - Songs from Primal Heart: Reimagined

Genre(s): Art pop, Ambient Pop

alZq44Q.jpg

Female singer-songwriters have been keen on reworking their releases lately, but two things set Kimbra apart here. Firstly, she has chosen to refurbish only a few of the more low-key tracks on the album, as well as a hard-to-find b-side. Secondly, Kimbra has a voice that only benefits from this stripped back setting, and the arrangements here add dimension to the album versions rather than feeling like unnecessary retreads   Preview: "Black Sky"

09. LOONA - [+ +]

Genre(s): K-pop, Dance-pop

MJb6YXj.jpgLoona’s producers have a great way of blending retro pop influences with forward-thinking production, so that songs such as Hi High and Stylish sound both classic and on-trend (as well as being massive bops). Meanwhile, the ensemble cast of vocalists are more than capable of delivering the sugary hooks that tie the songs together. Mix and Match outsold though.  Preview: "Stylish"

08. Kilo Kish - mothe

Genre(s): Synthpop, Art Pop, Electropop

HNzIMhH.jpgI first came across Kilo Kish from her myriad features on Vince Staples’ projects, but make no mistake, the good sis is not just some hook girl. Kilo has a casual delivery that is not quite singing and not quite rapping either, and there are some pretty insightful lyrics across the EP. However, the production is the main event here. From the pulsating, cowbell-flecked bass of Elegance, to the off-kilter house beats that spin out of control across EP centrepiece Void, there’s never a dull moment to be found on mothe. A pleasant surprise for me.   Preview: "Void"

07. SUNMI - Warning

Genre(s): K-pop, Electropop

l5UUBxD.pngSunmi’s second EP is a very consistent and surprisingly diverse collection of songs. Sunmi is as convincing on the self-assured pop-rap of the Addict intro as on the sultry slow jam highlight Black Pearl. Most interesting of all is the EP’s closer, Secret Tape, a charming 90 second foray into psych-folk that is one of the more left-field choices I’ve heard from a k-pop artiste.   Preview: "Black Pearl"

Nice batch of eps. I wanted to like the loona one more but it's not there yet.

Moses Sumney is also a right direction for him to take.

girl how do you do these formattings, I tried it myself but couldn't make it work

ahhh, moses sumney really snapped didn't he? that yuragi ep sounds very intriguing, lemme add it to my queue

06. Allie X - Super Sunset

Genre(s): Electropop, Dancepop, Synthpop

NJr6AoA.jpgAllie X is a lowkey pop mastermind. Energetic electropop bops? She’s your girl. Mellow slow jams? She got that right down to a science. On her best release so far, Allie shows off some of her best songwriting to date with hooks that deserve to be dominating the airwaves. Her next challenge is come up with some music that matches up to what her quirky (and slightly pretentious) persona would suggest. Though I guess she's pretty damn good at what she's doing right now. If it ain't broke don't fix it right?. Preview: "Focus"

05. Amber Mark - Conexão

Genre(s): Alternative R&B, Neo-Soul

4tHJNfc.jpgAmber Mark has one of those classic voices, one of those where she could sing her shopping list and it would be a bop. She reminds me a lot of Sade (it may as well be her singing on the Stronger than Pride cover). Ms. Mark’s influences, such as classic soul, house and bossa nova, give her a USP in the crowded alt-rnb scene and each of the EP’s four songs would be strong enough to head an album campaign in their own right. One to watch in 2019 for sure! Preview: "Love Me Right"

04. Kero Kero Bonito - TOTEP

Genre(s): Noise Pop, Indie Pop

MK3m576.jpgYou Know How it is. You leave home and start to live independently, only for all your childhood optimism and hope to be slowly chipped away by the crushing responsibilities of adulthood. KKB know that feeling. Trading Bonito Generation’s polished electropop for fuzzy guitars and feedback, the band aimed for a more gritty and rough around the edges approach for March’s TOTEP. This could have been somewhat of a bummer, but thankfully KKB have lost none of their knack for infectious hooks and kooky songwriting and have crafted one of the year’s best EPs as a result. Preview: "You Know How it Is"

03. Ravyn Lenae - Crush

Genre(s): Neo-soul

O1KCFbj.jpgMs. Ravyn caught my eye with her single Sticky, an irresistible slice of neo-soul where Lenae’s vocal acrobatics and Steve Lacy’s guitar tones are a match made in heaven. It took some time for Crush's other four tracks to grow on me, but there are no missteps here. Tracks like the smooth self-empowerment bop The Night Song and the adorable closing duet 4 Leaf Clover are some of the best R&B songs I’ve heard all year and I have a feeling she is not done yet.  Preview: "The Night Song"

02. Hatchie - Sugar & Spice

Genre(s): Dream Pop

tWtMWRI.jpg Hatchie is an artist that really puts the POP in dream pop; she’s like if Carly Rae got bored of synths and hired Slowdive as her touring band (obvious reference points but you get it). She already has a fully-formed sound, huge pop songs that capture the ups and downs of relationships. It makes you wonder where exactly she’ll go from here: will she be able to come up with something else and progress her sound, or simply end up being a one-trick-pony? We’ll see in 2019, but for now let’s enjoy these big bops from one the year's best newcomers.  Preview: "Bad Guy"

01. Wednesday Campanella - Galapagos

Genre(s): J-pop, Art Pop

3lmBmsM.jpg The Bamboo Princess, Galapagos's first song (and also my introduction to the band), does what any good opener should: instantly captivates and draws you in. it sounds like nothing else I’ve heard this year and sets a precedent for what is one of 2018’s most singular releases. I was close to placing this somewhere on my albums list because tbh it is far more developed than a lot of “albums” I’ve heard this year. Most of the EP is full of busy, constantly shuffling instrumentation, but the ambient-influenced tracks that close out the record hint at an even more interesting now direction, as vocalist’s KOM_I's charmingly offkey vocals dissipate into the dreamlike bleeps and bloops. 2018 had lots of strong EPs, but I’m pretty confident that Galapagos is the best of ‘em.  Preview: "The Bamboo Princess"

That concludes EPs, hope you guys listen to any you haven't heard x

Songs 75-66 coming tomorrow, God willing!

It only being 2 songs + an intro held it back a bit for me, but I also liked his Make Out remix ep thing too.

Well, I thought it was good, but I can see why it would be a disappointment given the hype + length of time it took till they debuted.

Ahhh all of these are excellent (pretending allie x isn't there :)). Wednesday Campanella got what she deserves

Hatchie did say her album (which should be out next year?) is quite different to this EP, so I'm very intrigued by that

Allie is like hit or miss for me, I really like some of her songs, while bored by some others, she's still very interesting tho, I hope she delivers
