Ephorize :michael: It was fine but she's done better and it wasn't strong enough to make me check out Eden.

Crayons and Duck Duck Goose are some good picks from it, the others are among my least faves :keir:

All I will say about aal (eye saw my remark about it there) is that it's a good thing that it got many people into the genre, or at the very least gave them a taste.

We got that right. Feb 3rd is her best song tho x.

Sorry, you're not the first to say it. i just really don't like genre gatekeeping like that, everyone's gotta start somewhere.

ephorize is cute and jorja's album wasn't anywhere near as boring as everyone claimed but not excellent either

also re: natalie, her debut has better songwriting but it feels v cheap, something like, say, christy has gorgeous backings but is a mixing disaster. the new record is more polished but lacks the soul, those cancel each other out imo

I never liked IYKYK that much tbh. It's a good opener but never snatched me or anything.

Idk, you're probably right, but I know nothing about mixing and i don't notice it unless its exceptionally bad (e.g. Azealia's music)

20 // JPEGMAFIA - veteran

experimental hip hop, glitch hop

Image result for jpegmafia veteranSince I’ve been following music, one thing I’ve noticed is an increasing preoccupation with the internet; bands will write concept albums about online relationships, popgirls will throw in lines about their insta likes, Poppy is doing… what she’s doing. Even down to his name, JPEGMAFIA feels like a product of the internet, and Veteran is an eclectic record where references to Lena Dunham and Morrisey diss tracks coexist. His edgy, reddit user’d humour could become exhausting, if he weren’t such a talented producer. Listening to the record is like having too many tabs open, having so many options available and never quite knowing where to look .JPEG loves to use soundscapes that are busy and overwhelming, songs like Real Nega and Baby I’m Bleeding are sensory overloads of abrasive beats and heavy sampling. What stops this from being completely too much, is that it all caps off at a reasonable 47 minutes, not a moment of which is wasted.

points: real nega, baby i'm bleeding, macaulay culkin, williamsburg, i cannot ****ing wait til morrissey dies

19 // soccer mommy - clean

trap rap. hardcore hip hop

Image result for soccer mommy cleanThere’s something so relatable about Sophie Allison’s songwriting: this definitely feels like the kind of album I’d make… if I were a white girl from Tennessee. The first half of Clean features some of the strongest indie rock I’ve heard all year: opener Still Clean stuns with its vivid imagery, Cool drips with a lovelorn nostalgia that recalls mid 00s indie pop, and Your Dog has spiky guitar riffs that perfectly complement Allison’s defiant lyrics. Arguably best of all is Blossom (Wasting All My Time), the kind of spare yet crushing ballad that is so so tricky to get right. The second half shows some of her weaknesses as a young songwriter with some repetitive themes (Last Girl is basically Cool 2.0 but not as good). Still, the record is a consistently solid debut that sets up Ms. Mommy as a real artist to watch.

points: your dog, cool, blossom (wasting all my time)

18 // sophie - oil of every pearl's un-insides

bubblegum bass, deconstructed club

Image result for sophie oil of every pearl's un insidesLast autumn when SOPHIE, famously elusive producer of “Bitch I’m Madonna” fame, decided to debut her new face and her voice on single It's Okay to Cry, I think we all knew a big storm was coming. Not one to disappoint, Oil of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides announced SOPHIE as one of the most singular artists of the 10s. Despite having been pigeonholed as a producer of a very specific synthetic electropop sound, the record runs the full gamut of genres: we have her classic ‘deconstructed club’ BDSM anthems (Ponyboy, Faceshopping), hyperactive meme-ready pop for the gays (Immaterial), a dark ambient moment (Pretending), and what sounds like every genre in the history of electronic music being put into a blender (Whole New World / Pretend World). Of course, you could argue that the record is incohesive, and I’d be lying if I said I completely disagree. Nonetheless, it’s hard to think of a more important debut in all of 2018. Grammy nom deserved.

points: is it cold in the water, immaterial, its okay to cry, infatuation

17 // young fathers - cocoa sugar

indietronica, neo-soul

Image result for young fathers cocoa sugarYoung Fathers had always been one of those acts where I was like “maybe I’ll check them out sometime”. They had won the Mercury Prize and got some critical buzz beforehand, but it was Cocoa Sugar that really made me take notice of these lads. From the mysterious cover art to the succinct song titles, the album gives few hints as to what to expect. Indeed, Young Fathers seem to delight in refusing to let anyone define their sound, as they flip from tender neo-soul balladry to abrasive synth punk in the space of a single track. At 36 minutes, the conciseness of the record allows the restless genre hopping to be fun without feeling messy, a snapshot of the group's influences that only leaves you wanting more.

points: wow, border girl, tremolo, toy

16 // yves tumor - safe in the hands of love

neo-psychedelia, post-industrial

Image result for safe in the hands of loveOne of the most unique albums I’ve heard all year, no one else really sounds like Yves Tumor because Yves Tumor makes a lot of effort not to sound like anyone else. The relentless genre experimentation only elevates this for me (except for the death industrial moment, Hope in Suffering, one of the worst songs of all time which single-handedly TANKED this from top 10 x). I like that his reference points aren’t always ones that are expected or obvious, like Recognizing the Enemy, which sounds almost like a 00s emo ballad. The album does a good job at balancing heaver and lighter moments; All the Love We Have Now, probably the most straightforward “bop” on the album, precedes the abrasive noise-rock album closer. This all creates a listening experience that is very engaging without necessarily feeling exhausting.

points: noid, recognizing the enemy, all the love we have now, let the lioness in you flow freely

Great set, love all of these albums (soccer mommy was cute I guess).

OOEPUI's lack of cohesion and consistency was a pretty big issue for me too, having the two worst songs of the year Immaterial and IOTC made it hard for me to rank it higher as I had wished. Still the most significant and important debut of 2018, no lies there.

15 // haru nemuri - haru to shura

j-pop, noise pop

ti0snHx.jpgHaru Nemuri’s Haru to Shura was a really nice surprise for me. Having not heard of her before this summer, I wasn’t really sure what expect when I clicked play. I was greeted with a barrage of drums, fuzzy guitar riffs, and most alarming of all, Haru’s incessant chanting: “MAKE MORE NOISE OF YOU!”. Haru raps, sings, and shouts her way through the record’s tracks with a relentless energy that doesn’t falter even with the final shrieks that close out Rock n Roll wa shinawai. Her passion and energy, as well as a real talent for engaging melodies that transcend any language barrier, have allowed this to be a real highlight for me. I would recommend this to anyone who though indie rock was a little dead this year (so, everyone).  points: make more noise of you, narashite, nineteen, rock 'n' roll

14 // ariana grande - sweetener

contemporary r&b, electropop

B5vwp4B.png

Sweetener stands as one of the most fun and unique pop albums of the year, full of bops and more reflective moments in equal measure. The duo of Ariana and Pharrell results in tracks that sound somewhere between Tasty-era Kelis, the Animal Crossing soundtrack, and the clip of Ariana shouting “******s lemme hear y’all make some noise!” – AKA pop music at its best. My one critique is that the features can be a mixed bag: contributions from Pharrell himself, as well as the “Come on a Cone” songstress are serviceable enough, but when Missy Elliot delivers her Borderline guest verse as though threatened at gunpoint you realise that Ari is really just best on her own. Indeed, for someone who was often mocked for being unable to have a solo hit, Sweetener’s success is in part due to Ariana’s charisma and charm. And of course, the talents of superior producer Pharrell.

points: sweetener, successful, blazed, God is a woman, no tears left to cry

13 // lily allen - no shame

contemporary r&b, electropop

81Atsk9.png

One of 2018’s most underrated records, No Shame finds Lily Allen trading Sheezus’ dated beats for a more subdued collection of minimalist downtempo tracks. Lily has lost none of her signature biting lyricism, but here she sings on tracks like Come on Then as if looking down from a vantage point, totally unbothered about others’ thoughts and beliefs. Elsewhere, she turns the lens in on herself. Apples is a brutally honest autopsy of Lily’s former marriage, built upon only spare guitar plucks borrowed from an inferior song. There are lighter moments too, such as My One and Pushing Up Daisies, which sounds exactly like you would expect if I said “Lily Allen does trap”. While there aren’t the highs to be found on her first two albums, No Shame succeeds by avoiding the uninspired filler that plagued those records. It’s her most accomplished to date.  points: higher, apples, pushing up daisies, trigger bang, come on then

12 // robyn - honey

dance pop, electropop

Image result for robyn honey

2018 was a particularly anemic year for mainstream pop music, but thankfully Robyn is here, and she has got the nutrition. Aside from the Body-Talk reminiscent closer Ever Again, Honey mostly abandons big pop choruses for more low key methods. Songs like highlight Send to Robin Immediately choose to build atmosphere rather than rely on instant gratification. The long awaited album was written during a series of personal setbacks, and there’s a sense of sadness lingering over each song, as though Robyn is trying to dance to keep from crying. Of course, she has lost none of her sense of humour; look no further than the ridiculous group-chat turned house bop Beach2K20 (that was an EXPERIMENTAL record). Basically, the album is everything a Robyn stan - or ex-hater - could want from her in 2018.

points: honey, human being, send to robin immediately

11 // kids see ghosts - kids see ghosts

pop rap, experimental hip hop

aQHvscS.jpgI think the most important thing for any album is consistency: consistently good songwriting, consistent pacing, no filler songs etc. Kanye West is… not consistent. A point that 2018 really hammered home. It’s impressive then that in spite of all his antics Kanye, assisted by Kid Cudi, managed to craft one of 2018's best records. It’s been said before, but the music on Kids See Ghosts really does match its cover artwork; the bright, vivid soundscapes on songs like Reborn draw as much from psychedelic music as from hip hop and R&B. Meanwhile, opener Feel the Love is aggressive and intense in a way that feels almost like a continuation of Ye’s magnum opus, Yeezus. While some other Wyoming Sessions albums felt slight and unfinished, KSG’s seven tracks are developed enough so that the short runtime works in its favour. I’ll take it over 27 track nonsense any day.  points: reborn, feel the love, freeee
