Remmy Posted December 24, 2018 Posted December 24, 2018 Unfortunately I didn't really enjoy Venice Bitch, even if you took out the long outro. I love Lana and stan Jack GODanoff but they just didn't come thru for me. No Angel slays, definitely agree with it being her best 2018 release.
collin Posted December 24, 2018 Posted December 24, 2018 In My Dreams is one of my fav songs from Isolation. What a beautiful Top 5! All lovely tracks in their own right, most on my list, as well.
Cloröx Posted December 24, 2018 Posted December 24, 2018 Perfect Top 5. No Angel, Lemon Glow and Venice Bitch
Wicked Posted December 24, 2018 Posted December 24, 2018 Damn that's a great top 10. Venice Bitch is a good pick for #1. Beach House has nice gowns.

Kimbra - "Like They Do on the TV" From: Primal Heart Kimbra has been notorious for stuffing as many genres as humanely possible into a single song, but on Like They Do on the TV she really homes in a kind of dreamy synthpop that is so rewarding when done right. It’s not the most original sound, but all is forgiven when that transcendent, feather-light chorus kicks in. I have been a fan of Kimbra for some time now, but honestly I had no idea she had such a perfect pop song in her. I think it’s the shaker, the shaker definitely takes this to the next level for me. Lazuli Posted December 24, 2018 Posted December 24, 2018 In My Dreams Incidental Boogie Sleep Honey No Angel Noid Lemon Glow Venice Bitch is lowkey overrated (the entire last leg of the song can be cut down to 45 seconds and it'll make the song SO much better)
Blue Rose Posted December 24, 2018 Posted December 24, 2018 Honey is a Pop masterpiece. I prefer MAC, I’m a sucker for sweet melodies and that’s what MAC gives me. Venice Bitch will probably grow on me when the album drops.
TRF. Posted December 24, 2018 Posted December 24, 2018 Venice Bicth number one... the TASTE The entire top 10...
Eeveelution Posted December 24, 2018 Author Posted December 24, 2018 (edited) ✨[NOT QUITE] honorable mentions. ✨ OK so I guess you could call these disappointments, though not all of them disappointed me so. I guess the common theme is that these were all hyped in some way but they didn't quite hit the mark for me. Not good enough to make my actual HMs but not bad enough to be considered the worst of the year. Several of these have been lashed across best ofs already, but maybe one or two may be controversial. lykke li // so sad so sexy Alright let’s start with Ms. Li. What else is there to say? I was obviously a huge Lykke stan and this, her first record in four years, was a real disappointment. I just feel like a lot of the songs here are so lazy, most are underwritten and very few of them hang around long after three minutes. It just makes me feel like Lykke and co were like “ok, this’ll do!”. The lyrics are extremely repetitive, but she’s no Charli and the hooks here just don't stick. This isn’t a bad record, however she deserves lashings so that next time she will do BETTER! janelle monae // dirty computer I mean, I agree with a lot of what has been said about this. Yeah this had no replay value for me. As a whole, most songs are fine enough, but when you look at the songs individually they start to fall apart. I’m ambivalent toward tracks like Pynk and Crazy, Classic Life, which both have elements that I like and some I… don’t. Then there’s something like Take a Byte which just doesn’t work as well without the transition from CCL. Some songs are just straight up bad, like Americans and I Got the Juice. Artists writing political songs has always been a red flag for me. My fave has done it, I’m sure all your faves have done it, and it’s usually a mixed bag. Artists are not politicians, and when they decide to make a statement it’s often black and white and lacking nuance. The lyrics here are frequently very heavy handed and awkward so that I can’t always take the points Janelle makes seriously. Ultimately, there is a lot to like about Dirty Computer, but the #1 most acclaimed album of 2018? I don’t think so mama. the 1975 // a brief inquiry into online relationships This was such an unnecessarily controversial album, tho I do understand why. The rave reviews, some of which claimed that this album was the “modern day ok computer” (how dare they!) seemed to set this up as something a lot of people were ready to dislike. And of course, the 1975 are just one of those bands people love to hate, carrying the torch I guess for arctic monkeys in that way. I personally think it’s… ok. The album attempts myriad genres: new wave, ambient pop, tropical house, even cool jazz. I would say it barely succeeds at most of them. Even if the lyrics are sometimes a miss for me, I gotta give matty and co props for their ambition. lady GaGa & bradley cooper // a star is born soundtrack Do y'all hear sumn? snail mail // pristine Girl I ain't hear nuthn. years and years - palo santo // troye sivan - bloom In 2018’s battle of the white twinks… no one wins. Honestly these are definitely the albums that little boys who danced in their mum’s heels to Kylie and Britney songs would grow up to make. Both Troye and Alexander clearly love pop music and understand how to write a catchy pop song, however they don’t really take their vision to any new or interesting directions. Honestly, they’re not all that different to artists like Camila or Dua in that respect. Troye in particular is a charisma-less vocalist and songs like seventeen don’t pop like they would in more talented hands. I get that jjust having queer men being celebrated in pop music should be enough, but it just doesn't feel like that to me. cardi b - invasion of privacy // nicki minaj - queen The whole beef between these two was kind of uninteresting to me cause like, who is there to root for? Nicki is obviously a disgusting rapist enabler, but Cardi is no angel either, despite her ‘likeable’ image. But anyway, this shouldn’t have anything to do with the music so let’s talk about that. Invasion of Privacy is fine. I think personally all you need from Cardi is Bodak and Bartier. The album doesn’t really offer anything else that that isn't done better by those tracks / more talented artists. I think what’s off for me (and other people) is this narrative that critics (trying to be on the right side of history, idk?) are trying to spin that this is some monumental rap classic, when I think most of us can agree it’s just a collection of quick lil bops. As for La Miki Minach, there are actually some pretty damn good songs on Queen. Ganja Burn(s), Coco Chanel, Street Fighter Chun Li. All of these take her sound in new and interesting directions. Unfortunately, the mid-section of the album is padded with songs like Bed, Thought I Knew You, Come See About Me: boring midtempos and ballads where Nicki really phones it in. I don’t know why she keeps making songs like these when like… no one wants that from her. Nicki is frustrating as a person and as an artist, and it’s a shame that she’ll always be the girl who snapped on Monster when she could have been so much more. julia holter // aviary I’m feeling brave so let’s go. Aviary is not good. There are some things that I like about it; there are great songs with rich textures and experimental structures. So why isn’t it good then? I hear you ask. Because it’s so damn long. In my opinion, with few exceptions, there is no reason for an album to be longer than about 60 minutes. Even when the songs are good, which on Aviary they mostly are, there are always weaker tracks that are less essential to the narrative and could have been kept as b-sides or something. Aviary is so frustratingly self-indulgent, like did we really need songs where there’s three straight minutes of her moaning above some bagpipes? A lot of the songs blur into a sludge of impenetrable ooohhs and ahhhs so that it just becomes exhausting to sit through. Julia has said that the album isn’t necessarily meant to be listened to in one sitting, but for me that just delineates how Aviary fails the one key purpose of an album. Sorry! No update tomorrow obvs, so merry xmas everyone xx ? Edited December 24, 2018 by Eeveelution

Remmy Posted December 25, 2018 Posted December 25, 2018 Dirty Computer: Well luckily this had a very large replay value for me Wow put some respect on Americans! A Star Is Born OST: Yeah, I definitely hear sumn... greatness Bloom: Omg you did not just compare Troye to the likes of C**ila I'm gonna be traumatized by that sentence Queen: Oh this definitely deserves to be on this list! By far her weakest album, it's so sad.
-mUsIcLoVeR- Posted December 25, 2018 Posted December 25, 2018 OMG these albums are some of my favorites this year I'll be keen on your list. I might discover some great new music!
Lazuli Posted December 25, 2018 Posted December 25, 2018 I'll just say I like a lot of these albums (a lot) and that's that on that
Kevin2803 Posted December 25, 2018 Posted December 25, 2018 How dare you to call "Americans" bad Janelle's album is amazing Also, Bloom and Palo Santo maybe not as good as their first albums, but i still like them very much, especially Palo Santo. "Up in Flames" alone is a pop masterpiece. ASIB has some of the best Gaga songs in years. What are you doing?
ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted December 25, 2018 ATRL Moderator Posted December 25, 2018 Good soty. It's honestly one of Lana's best songs. 3rd best, to be exact! Finally people are starting to agree that Nicki's rap/sung midtempos are a snooze and awful. People were stanning them during PF and TPP eras.

Pink Matter Posted December 25, 2018 Posted December 25, 2018 Quote janelle monae // dirty computer no points were made except when it comes to I Got The Juice (which is some mierda) and American (which is so incredibly ham-fisted) The others though; points, points everywhere. Especially about the two twinks being mediocre and Cardi being so incredibly overrated.
World Eater Posted December 25, 2018 Posted December 25, 2018 Screaming at you not being bothered enough about miss Mail that you couldn't even get her album title right
Tom Vercetti Posted December 26, 2018 Posted December 26, 2018 Quote snail mail // pristine whether this was intentional or not I lol'd. Understand the majority of these. I also feel the "play in whichever order u want" for Aviary felt a bit like a cop out response. Going from a short and quite accessible upbeat track like Whether to 8 minutes of whatever Chaitius was can be jarring.
Eeveelution Posted December 26, 2018 Author Posted December 26, 2018 thanks y'all, wasn't expecting such acclaim for the top 10 ❤️ going ✈️ update with actual hms later.
